NODC Accession 0112637 includes discrete sample, site samples, biological and physical data collected aboard the NATHANIEL B. PALMER during cruise NBP0103 in the South Pacific Ocean from 2001-04-29 to 2001-06-02. These data include PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY and LIGHT INTENSITY. The instruments used to collect these data include bottle. These data were collected by Maria Vernet of University of California-San Diego as part of Southern Ocean GLOBEC. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-07-25. The following is the text of the abstract provided by BCO-DMO: Production vs Irradiance A short note on the "Southern Ocean Grid System": The grid is a Cartesian plane covering the sample region in which distances are easy to calculate. The grid system used for SOGLOBEC is a universal transverse mercator (UTM) projection with a certain base point and rotation. The base point was chosen in the far south and the rotation was chosen to create one axis along the peninsula, and the other offshore. The units of UTM are meters, but the points are chosen in km rounded to the nearest km. Negative numbers mean that samples were taken southwest of the y axis or southeast of the x axis. Belt transects along 2 consecutively-placed, 25m transect lines were surveyed as part of Rapid Ecological Assessments conducted at 2 sites at Kaula Rock in the Main Hawaiian Islands in August, 2006 from the NOAA vessel Hi'ialakai (HII06-10). Raw survey data included species presence and relative abundance, colony counts and size classes, and visual estimation of percent cover. On each side of the transect lines, 0.5 m was included in the belt (for a total of 50m2 per site).

MBT data were collected from the USS REAPER in support of the Fleet Observations of Oceanographic Data (FLOOD) project. Data were collected in the North Pacific Ocean by US Navy; Ships of Opportunity from 13 October 1966 to 23 October 1966. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

This georeferenced image represents 10 meter resolution bathymetry of an offshore portion of the NPS's Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument, south of St. John, US Virgin Islands. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in the US Virgin Islands from 2/1/05 to 2/12/05. Data was acquired with a pole-mounted Reson 8101 ER multibeam echosounder (240 kHz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS v5.4 software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM zone 20 north, datum NAD83. The processed CARIS data was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface -akin to a DTM- based on swath angle. Within CARIS, an imagery file with associated georeferencing was then exported from the BASE surface.The project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.

These data include PIGMENTS, SPECIES IDENTIFICATION - LIFE STAGE and SPECIES IDENTIFICATION - WET WEIGHT. The instruments used to collect these data include net - plankton net. These data were collected by Langdon Quetin and Robin Ross of University of California-Santa Barbara as part of Southern Ocean GLOBEC. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-07-25. The following is the text of the abstract provided by BCO-DMO: "Winter ecology of larval krill: quatifying their interaction with the pack ice habitat" The goal of the larval krill studies was to investigate the physiology and ecology of krill larvae associated with the pack ice and the microbial community on which they feed. During LMG0106 we occupied two 4-5 day ice stations (Robert and Billy) and sampled several other ice floes opportunistically. We conducted 10 instantaneous growth rate experiments, and 4 whole body clearance time experiments to determine gut passage time (decline in pigment content over time). We also sampled larvae at two additional sites for initial body pigment content (whole body fluorescence), and at 4 sites for condition factor. The under-ice algal community was sampled at one site. Length and stage frequency determinations were also determined. We occupied three time-series stations of approximately 1 week each, and in addition opportunistically sampled at times when other activities had priority. Our primary goal during the cruise was to occupy three ice camps or process stations with the intent of thoroughly studying the under-ice environment by SCUBA in conjunction with other projects working topside.
