Description
Water physics and chemistry data were collected from STD casts from THELMA DALE II and other platforms from 09 August 1954 to 05 March 1959. Data were submitted by Rutgers University; Oyster Research Laboratory (RU). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F004 Water Physics and Chemistry format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f004.html. The F004 format is used for data from measurements and analyses of physical and chemical characteristics of the water column. Among chemical parameters that may be recorded are salinity, PH, and concentration of oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, chlorophyll, and suspended solids. Physical parameters that may be recorded include temperature, density (sigma-t), transmissivity, and current velocity (east-west and north-south components). Cruise and station information, including environmental conditions of the study site at the time of observations, is also included.

MBT data were collected from the USS HUMMINGBIRD in support of the Fleet Observations of Oceanographic Data (FLOOD) project. Data were collected by US Navy; Ships of Opportunity from 31 August 1966 to 04 September 1966. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

Description
The survey consists of 120 random stratified stations in the Middle Atlantic Bight, Southern New England, Georges Bank and the Gulf of Maine. Depending on the duration of the cruise and weather, fewer stations might be samples. These will be sampled with an array of bongo nets: a 61 cm bongo frame equipped with two 333 micron mesh nets, and a smaller 20 cm bongo frame equipped with two nets of that same mesh A subset of 15 stations from the cruise will be sampled with a similar array except that the 20 cm bongo frames will be equipped with 165 micron mesh nets. There will be five fixed position stations in the Gulf of Maine that will be sampled for plankton using a bongo net, and for water using a Niskin bottle rosette equipped with 12 10-liter bottles provided by the Northeast Fisheries Science Center. There will also be an additional thirty fixed position stations that will be sampled using only the Niskin bottle rosette sampler. The rosette sampler will be equipped with a Laser In-Situ Scattering and Transmissometry (LISST) instrument mounted horizontally on the rosette frame below the Niskin bottles to provide particulate counts and measurements. The Video Plankton Recorder will be deployed at selected stations underneath the bongo sample. It will record data in archive-mode and be downloaded on the deck. The Imaging FlowCytobot will be plumbed into the scientific flow-through system and used throughout the cruise. This cruise will represent the first operational deployment of these new technologies in the northeast U.S. shelf ecosystems.

NODC Accession 0105531 includes tows - plankton tows and biological data collected aboard the ALBATROSS IV, ENDEAVOR and OCEANUS during cruises AL9505, AL9506, AL9508, AL9605, AL9607, AL9701, AL9705, AL9707, AL9801, AL9806, AL9808, AL9901, AL9904, AL9906, EN261, EN263, EN265, EN276, EN278, EN282, EN320, OC275, OC298, OC300, OC302, OC317, OC319, OC322, OC336 and OC341 in the North Atlantic Ocean from 1995-02-11 to 1999-06-24. These data include SPECIES IDENTIFICATION, TAXONOMIC CODE and species abundance. The instruments used to collect these data include Multiple Opening/Closing Net and Environmental Sensing System (MOCNESS). These data were collected by Erich Horgan and Larry Madin of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as part of GB. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-04-25. The following is the text of the abstract provided by BCO-DMO: Organism abundance derived from sampling by the 10 m2 MOCNESS system Important information: The catch from each net was subsampled and all animals in the subsample were counted. Due to the shear volume of data, only those animals found were represented in these on-line data. i.e., no animals with zero abundances were listed. XBT data were collected from the USS FEARLESS in support of the Fleet Observations of Oceanographic Data (FLOOD) project. Data were collected by US Navy; Ships of Opportunity from 02 August 1971 to 05 August 1971. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instrument. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles at depths of about 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Cruise information, position, date, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT data file, in which temperature values are recorded at uniform 5m intervals, the XBT Data File contains temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths are at a minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to record the temperature curve to an acceptable degree of accuracy. On output, however, the user may request temperature values either at inflection points or interpolated to uniform depth increments.
