NODC Accession 0115224 includes underway - surface, meteorological, biological, physical and chemical data collected aboard the NEW HORIZON during cruise NH0307A in the North Pacific Ocean from 2003-07-03 to 2003-07-08. These data include WIND DIRECTION, FLUORESCENCE, WATER DEPTH, PHOTOSYNTHETIC ACTIVE RADIATION (PAR), LONGWAVE RADIATION - REFLECTED, DEWPOINT, AIR TEMPERATURE, WIND SPEED, RELATIVE HUMIDITY, PRECIPITATION, SHORTWAVE RADIATION - REFLECTED, CONDUCTIVITY, WATER TEMPERATURE, SIGMA-T, SALINITY - SURFACE WATER, SOUND VELOCITY and SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include thermosalinographs, flow meter, GPS, gyrocompass, fluorometer, barometers, echo sounder, PAR Sensor, meteorological sensors - coastal meteorological stations and radiometer. These data were collected by Adriana Huyer of Oregon State University as part of NEP. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-11-01. The following is the text of the abstract provided by BCO-DMO: Underway MET data collected on GLOBEC LTOP cruises aboard R/V New Horizon. Underway temperature and salinity calibration information is listed in the sensor calibration table (http://globec.whoi.edu/nep/reports/ccs_cruises/sensorcal.pdf) (PDF). Marine bird sighting and other data were collected from aircraft and other platforms. Data were collected by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP) from 06 March 1975 to 21 March 1976. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F033 Marine Bird Sighting, Ship/Aircraft Census format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F033 format contains data from field observations of marine birds made along ship or aircraft survey tracks. These data are collected to provide information on population density and distribution. Start and end position, date and elapsed time, speed and course, platform type and observing techniques are reported for each survey. Environmental information may include meteorological and sea surface conditions, distances to the shoreline and shelf break, ice characteristics within and outside each transect and surface debris, including oil slicks. Species data may include age, sex, color, plumage, number of individuals, direction of flight, behavior and food source association. Any number of species may be reported within one observation time span.

Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are an integral component in oil-spill contingency planning and assessment. They serve as a source of information in the event of an oil spill incident. ESI maps contain three types of information: shoreline habitats (classified according to their sensitivity to oiling), sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Most often, this information is plotted on 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles, although in the Alaska ESI maps, USGS topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 are used, and in other ESI maps, NOAA charts have been used as the base map. Collections of these maps, grouped by state or a logical geographic area, are published as ESI atlases. Digital data have been published for most of the U.S. shoreline, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

Belt transects along 3 consecutively-placed, 25m transect lines were surveyed as part of Rapid Ecological Assessments conducted at 10 sites at Pagan in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) in August and September, 2003 from the NOAA vessel Oscar Elton Sette (OES03-07). Raw survey data included species level abundance estimates.

This project is a cooperative effort among the National Ocean Service, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment; the University of Hawaii; and Analytical Laboratories of Hawaii, LLC. The goal of the work was to develop coral reef mapping methods and compare benthic habitat maps generated by photointerpreting georeferenced color aerial photography, hyperspectral and IKONOS satellite imagery. The enhanced spectral resolution of hyperspectral and control of bandwidths of multispectral data yield an advantage over color aerial photography particularly when coral health and time series analysis of coral reef community structure are of interest. Depending on the type of instrument, a spectral imaging system can be utilized to see multiple colors from ultraviolet through the far infrared range. The AURORA hyperspectral imaging system collected 72 ten nm bands in the visible and near infrared spectral range with a 3 meter pixel resolution. The data was processed to select band widths, which optimized feature detection in shallow and deep water. Photointerpreters can accurately and reliably delineate boundaries of features in the imagery as they appear on the computer monitor using a software interface such as the Habitat Digitizer.
