A calibration base line (CBL) is a precisely measured, straight-line course of approximately 1,400 m used to calibrate Electronic Distance Measuring Instruments (EDMI). A CBL usually consists of four segments ranging from 150 to 1,400 m whose lengths are measured with two high precision EDMI. Since the program began in 1974, NGS has established more than 300 base lines throughout the United States in cooperation with government agencies, universities and professional groups. Participating organizations must select a suitable site that is accessible for public use and install the base line markers 2 to 3 months before measurements are taken. Published CBL distances are available from the National Geodetic Survey, 301-713-3242 or ngs.infocenter@noaa.gov. For more information, please refer to: [1] NOAA Technical Memorandum NOS NGS-8 - Establishment of Calibration Base Lines (1994). [2] NOAA Technical Memorandum NOS NGS-10 - Use of Calibration Base Lines (1977). Both publications are available in pdf from http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/PUBS_LIB/pub_index.html.

This Small Business Innovation Research Phase I project seeks to develop self-healing composites using carbon nanofibers in conjunction with encapsulated resin/hardener. Polymer matrix composites offering multiple advantages of lightweight, high strength and stiffness, vibration damping, and corrosion resistance are becoming widely used in aerospace and commercial applications. A primary weakness of structural composites is damage from impact, where resulting microcracks can propagate to allow delamination and/or fiber breakage of the composite, resulting in loss of the excellent physical properties for which composites are selected. Incorporation of carbon nanofibers (CNF) into the polymer matrix, resulting in a significant increase of the composite interphase, has been shown to mitigate microcrack formation. CNF additives in the matrix have also demonstrated improvement in interlaminar mechanical properties, thermal and electrical conductivity, vibration damping, and fire retardancy. A separate promising tool for addressing damage from impact is the emerging class of self-healing materials, having the ability to heal microcracks and restore mechanical and corrosion-resistant properties of the composite. In the proposed effort, a combination of these tools will be investigated to determine the feasibility of incorporating self-healing, while concurrently producing multifunctional improvements in interlaminar shear strength, modulus, fracture toughness, transport properties, fire retardancy and vibration damping.

This dataset contains a list of products that carry the Design for the Environment (DfE) label. This mark enables consumers to quickly identify and choose products that can help protect the environment and are safer for families. When you see the DfE logo on a product it means that the DfE scientific review team has screened each ingredient for potential human health and environmental effects and that-based on currently available information, EPA predictive models, and expert judgment-the product contains only those ingredients that pose the least concern among chemicals in their class. Product manufacturers who become DfE partners, and earn the right to display the DfE logo on recognized products, have invested heavily in research, development and reformulation to ensure that their ingredients and finished product line up on the green end of the health and environmental spectrum while maintaining or improving product performance. EPA's Design for the Environment Program (DfE) has allowed use of their logo on over 2500 products. These products are formulated from the safest possible ingredients and have reduced the use of "chemicals of concern" by hundreds of millions of pounds.

Shrnutí
Popis
The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) issues a series of thirteen probabilistic three-month precipitation outlooks for the United States. CPC issues the thirteen outlooks each month with lead times from 0.5 months to 12.5 months. For example, in mid-January, CPC will issue Three-Month Precipitation Outlooks for February through April, March through May, April through June, and so on into February through April of the following year. A new set of outlooks would then be released in mid-February for March through May, April through June, and so on into March through May of the following year. CPC expresses the outlooks in a 3-category probabilistic format as the chance the total precipitation for the period will be above, below, or near median. CPC bases its definition of above median, near median, and below median by fitting a Gamma distribution to a thirty year climatology and dividing this distribution into equally likely thirds. Note that the base period for the thirty year climatology (currently beginning in 1981 and ending in 2010) is updated once per decade. CPC indicates the probability of the most likely category with shaded contours and labels the centers of maximum probability with the letters "A" (for Above Median), "B" (for Below Median), or "N" (for Near Median). For areas where a favored category cannot be determined, CPC indicates those areas with an "EC" meaning "Equal Chances". CPC also accompanies the outlook maps with a technical discussion of the meteorological and climatological basis for the outlooks. CPC may include analysis of statistical and numerical models, meteorological and sea-surface temperature patterns, trends and past analogs, and confidence factors in this technical discussion.

The National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) provides states and communities with a clearer understanding of violent deaths to guide local decisions about efforts to prevent violence and helps them track progress over time. To stop violent deaths, we must first understand all the facts. Created in 2002, the NVDRS is a surveillance system that pulls together data on violent deaths in 18 states (see map below), including information about homicides, such as homicides perpetrated by a intimate partner (e.g., boyfriend, girlfriend, wife, husband), child maltreatment (or child abuse) fatalities, suicides, deaths where individuals are killed by law enforcement in the line of duty, unintentional firearm injury deaths, and deaths of undetermined intent. These data are supported by WISQARS, an interactive query system that provides data on injury deaths, violent deaths, and nonfatal injuries.
