Popis

The Daily Fine Particulate Matter data available on CDC WONDER are geographically aggregated daily measures of fine particulate matter in the outdoor air, spanning the years 2003-2008. PM2.5 particles are air pollutants with an aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 micrometers. Reported measures are the daily measure of fine particulate matter in micrograms per cubic meter (PM2.5) (''µg/m''³), the number of observations, minimum and maximum range value, and standard deviation. Data are available by place (combined 48 contiguous states plus the District of Columbia, region, division, state, county), time (year, month, day) and specified fine particulate matter (''µg/m''³)value. County-level and higher data are aggregated from 10 kilometer square spatial resolution grids. In a study funded by the NASA Applied Sciences Program / Public Health Program, scientists at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center / Universities Space Research Association modified the regional surfacing algorithm of Al-Hamdan et al. (2009) and used it to generate continuous spatial surfaces (grids) of daily PM2.5 for the whole conterminous U.S. for 2003-2008. Two sources of environmental data were used as input to the surfacing algorithm, US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Air Quality System (AQS) PM2.5 in-situ data and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aerosol optical depth remotely sensed data. They also identified in a Geographic Information System (GIS) the associated geographic locations of the centroids of the gridded PM2.5 dataset in terms of the counties and states they fall into to enable aggregation to different geographic levels in CDC WONDER.

The Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) Database depicts flood risk information and supporting data used to develop the risk data. The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual-chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. The DFIRM Database is derived from Flood Insurance Studies (FISs), previously published Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), flood hazard analyses performed in support of the FISs and FIRMs, and new mapping data, where available. The FISs and FIRMs are published by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The file is georeferenced to earth's surface using the UTM projection and coordinate system. The specifications for the horizontal control of DFIRM data files are consistent with those required for mapping at a scale of 1:12000.

Originally designed for military use, the multibeam echosounder has proved very useful for nautical charting, oceanographic research and modeling, habitat classification, maritime commerce, and recreational applications. The Multibeam Bathymetry Database at NCEI collects and archives multibeam data from the earliest commercial installations (circa 1980) through today's modern high-resolution collections. Data are acquired primarily from government and academic sources and consist of the raw (as collected) sonar data files. Datasets may also include processed or edited versions of the sonar data, ancillary data, derived products, and/or metadata for the data collection. The Multibeam Bathymetry Database provides data that span the globe and are discoverable and accesible via map interface or text-only search options.

Metropolitan Divisions subdivide a Metropolitan Statistical Area containing a single core urban area that has a population of at least 2.5 million to form smaller groupings of counties or equivalent entities. Not all Metropolitan Statistical Areas with urban areas of this size will contain Metropolitan Divisions. Metropolitan Division are defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and consist of one or more main counties or equivalent entities that represent an employment center or centers, plus adjacent counties associated with the main county or counties through commuting ties. Because Metropolitan Divisions represent subdivisions of larger Metropolitan Statistical Areas, it is not appropriate to rank or compare Metropolitan Divisions with Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas. The Metropolitan Divisions boundaries are those defined by OMB based on the 2010 Census and published in 2013.

The US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHEERL) in the Environmental Public Health Division (EPHD) is currently engaged in research aimed at developing a measure that estimates overall environmental quality at the county level for the United States. This work is being conducted as an effort to learn more about how various environmental factors simultaneously contribute to health disparities in low-income and minority populations, and to better estimate the total environmental and social context to which humans are exposed. This dataset contains the finalized transformed variables chosen to represent the Air, Water, Land, Built, and Sociodemographic Domains of the total environment. Six criteria air pollutants and 81 hazardous air pollutants are included in this dataset. Data sources are the EPA's Air Quality system (http://www.epa.gov/ttn/airs/airsaqs/) and the National-scale Air Toxics Assessment (http://www.epa.gov/nata/). Variables are average pollutant concentrations or emissions for 2000-2005 at the county level for all counties in the United States. Data on water impairment, waste permits, beach closures, domestic water source, deposition for 9 pollutants, drought status, and 60 chemical contaminants. Data sources are the EPA's WATERS (Watershed Assessment, Tracking and Environmental ResultS) Database (http://www.epa.gov/waters/), the U.S. Geological Survey Estimates of Water Use in the U.S. for 2000 and 2005 (http://water.usgs.gov/watuse/), the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (http://nadp.sws.uiuc.edu/), the U.S. Drought Monitor Data (http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/), and the EPA's National Contaminant Occurrence Database (http://water.epa.gov/scitech/datait/databases/drink/ncod/databases-index.cfm). Variables are calculated for the time period from 2000-2005 at the county level for all counties in the United States. Data represents traffic safety, public transportation, road type, the business environment and public housing. Data sources are the Dun and Bradstreet North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes; Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER); Fatality Annual Reporting System (FARS); and Housing and Urban Development (HUD) data. This dataset contains the finalized variables chosen to represent the sociodemographic domain of the total environment. Data represents socioeconomic and crime conditions. Data sources are the United States Census and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reports. Variables are calculated for the time period from 2000-2005 at the county level for all counties in the United States.

This dataset is a result of the California Ocean Uses Atlas Project: a collaboration between NOAA's National Marine Protected Areas Center and Marine Conservation Biology Institute. The Project was designed to enhance ocean management through geospatial data on the full range of significant human uses of California's ocean environment from the shoreline to the 200 nm EEZ boundary. Data was gathered from regional ocean experts and users through participatory GIS methods. The California Ocean Uses Atlas Project fills a critical information gap in ocean management by providing an unprecedented, comprehensive, consistent and spatially explicit picture of human uses for management agencies, policy makers and stakeholders interested in sound and equitable ocean governance. Using participatory GIS concepts and applications, the Atlas Project generated spatial data and map products illustrating patterns, intensity, and temporal changes in a wide range of human uses in three broad categories of use: (i) fishing, (ii) non-consumptive, and (iii) industrial activities. The resulting datasets depict patterns of ocean use on a broad scale appropriate for a variety of ocean planning and management needs.

Every state will have a Health Insurance Marketplace, but each state can choose how it will operate. States can create and run their own Marketplace, or have a Marketplace supported by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). States may also choose to partner with HHS to run some functions of their Marketplace. HHS already has granted conditional approval to some states. This means they are on track to have a Marketplace starting in October 2013. The links below take you to websites that describe that states Marketplace efforts. The Marketplaces themselves will not begin accepting enrollments until October 2013.

Popis

The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The latter are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. In four states (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and thus constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation. The Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: Municipios in Puerto Rico, Districts and Islands in American Samoa, Municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas is covered by counties or equivalent entities. The boundaries for counties and equivalent entities are mostly as of January 1, 2013, primarily as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). However, some changes made after January 2013, including the addition and deletion of counties, are included.

Bee conservation, broadly speaking, has four main objectives: 1 to conserve the individual species of native bees, 2 to conserve the ecological services pollination of native plants provided by native bees, 3 to bring more native bee species into agricultural service, and 4 to maintain the health and viability of honey bees for agricultural purposes. Three of these objectives relate directly to native habitats, and in order to begin to address them it is necessary to identify which bee species are present within a particular geography, and to gain a basic understanding of the span of their ecological tolerances and abundance. Native habitats and communities offer the best starting point for this effort because they are reservoirs of biodiversity compared to disturbed areas, urban parks, habitat reconstructions, etc. The project summarized in these following pages, initiated in 2012 and enabled by staff and volunteers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service, is a first step towards identifying and documenting the bee species present on selected refuges in the Midwest, and also provides limited data on their ecological amplitude and abundance. Collecting effort in 2013 varied from refuge to refuge, as did the number of sampling sites and the intent or design of the survey at each refuge. Some refuges were interested in comparing remnants to reconstructions, others compared different native habitat types, others were simply interested in an overall survey of the refuge. The value of the data to each refuge is largely proportional to the effort expended, but even limited collecting effort provided some valuable data.
