A widespread dieoff of adult seabirds, affecting primarily the blacklegged kittiwake Rissa tridactyla, and shorttailed shearwater Puffinus tenuirostris, occurred in the northern and western Gulf of Alaska as well as in portions of the Bering and Chukchi seas between 10 August and 30 September 1983. All carcasses were greatly emaciated with little fat and much atrophy of pectoral muscles. These findings support our preliminary conclusions that the dieoff was related to severe stress caused by malnutrition. Birds evaluated were seabirds, Blacklegged Kittiwake, Shorttailed Shearwater, Murres, Northern Fulmar, Sooty Shearwater, and Redlegged Kittiwake. Locations include Gulf of Alaska, Cook Inlet, Prince William Sound, Middleton Island, Kodiak Island, Chignik, Alaskan Peninsula, Egegik, Kotzebue, and Aleutian Islands.

This Version 7 NOAA Fundamental Climate Data Record (CDR) from Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) contains brightness temperatures that have been inter-calibrated and homogenized over the observation time period. The temperature data are from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) and Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) series of passive microwave radiometers carried onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites. These satellite sensors measure the natural microwave emission coming from the Earth’s surface in the spectral band from 19 to 85 GHz. This dataset encompasses data from a total of seven satellites including the SSM/I sensors on board DMSP satellites F08, F10, F11, F13, F14, and F15 as well as the SSMIS sensors on board DMSP satellite F17. The data record covers the time period from July 1987 through the present with a one month latency. The spatial and temporal resolutions of the CDR files correspond to the original resolution of the source SSMI(S) observations. There are roughly 15 orbits per day with a swath width of approximately 1400 km resulting in nearly global daily coverage. The spatial resolution of the data is a function of the sensor/channel and varies from approximately 50 km for the lowest frequency channels to approximately 15km for the high-frequency channels. The output parameters include the observed brightness temperatures for each of the seven SSM/I channels and 24 SSMIS channels at the original sensor channel resolution along with latitude and longitude information, time, quality flags, and view angle information. The file format is netCDF-4 with added metadata that follow the Climate and Forecast (CF) Conventions and Attribute Convention for Dataset Discovery (ACDD). There are three major changes in the Version 7 processing: (1) the water vapor continuum absorption model was re-derived, (2) the clear-sky bias in cloud water was removed and the data format for cloud water was changed, and (3) the beamfilling correction in the rain algorithm was modified. Relative to Version 6, Version 7 has: (1) increased vapor values in the range of 50-60 mm by 1%, (2) increased vapor values above 60 mm by 2-3%, (3) cloud data changed to the range of cloud water values: -0.05 to 2.45 mm (cloud data format has changed), and (4) increased the global mean rain rates by about 16% (mostly due to changes in the extratropical values).

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county or equivalent entity, and were defined by local participants as part of the 2010 Census Participant Statistical Areas Program. The Census Bureau delineated the census tracts in situations where no local participant existed or where all the potential participants declined to participate. The primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of census data and comparison back to previous decennial censuses. Census tracts generally have a population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people, with an optimum size of 4,000 people. When first delineated, census tracts were designed to be homogeneous with respect to population characteristics, economic status, and living conditions. The spatial size of census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement. Physical changes in street patterns caused by highway construction, new development, and so forth, may require boundary revisions. In addition, census tracts occasionally are split due to population growth, or combined as a result of substantial population decline. Census tract boundaries generally follow visible and identifiable features. They may follow legal boundaries such as minor civil division (MCD) or incorporated place boundaries in some States and situations to allow for census tract-to-governmental unit relationships where the governmental boundaries tend to remain unchanged between censuses. State and county boundaries always are census tract boundaries in the standard census geographic hierarchy. In a few rare instances, a census tract may consist of noncontiguous areas. These noncontiguous areas may occur where the census tracts are coextensive with all or parts of legal entities that are themselves noncontiguous. For the 2010 Census, the census tract code range of 9400 through 9499 was enforced for census tracts that include a majority American Indian population according to Census 2000 data and/or their area was primarily covered by federally recognized American Indian reservations and/or off-reservation trust lands; the code range 9800 through 9899 was enforced for those census tracts that contained little or no population and represented a relatively large special land use area such as a National Park, military installation, or a business/industrial park; and the code range 9900 through 9998 was enforced for those census tracts that contained only water area, no land area.

This 2' geoid height grid for Mexico, and North-Central America, is the MEXICO97 geoid model. The computation used about one million terrestrial and marine gravity measurements held in the NGS database as of March 1997. These gravity measurements were augmented by data contributions from NGA (former National Imagery and Mapping Agency), and satellite altimeter-derived gravity anomalies computed by Sandwell and Smith (1997). Large data gaps south of 20 degrees North latitude were filled with 15'x15' gravity values derived from the EGM96 global geopotential model. This helped control interpolation errors across the data gaps during the gridding of terrain corrected Bouguer anomalies. After gridding of the Bouguer anomalies, the Bouguer plate was restored, a degree 360 model of gravity anomalies (from EGM96) was removed, and the residual free-air anomalies in the data gaps (south of 20 degrees North Latitude) were zeroed. (This zeroing was found to be the best way currently available to yield a reasonable geoid in the data gaps). The residual Faye anomalies were converted to residual co-geoid undulations through a 1-D FFT formulation of Stokes' integral, and finally the EGM96 undulation model was restored, and the indirect effect applied. This means that in the data gaps, long wavelength information is provided by EGM96, short wavelength information is provided by the 2'x2' DTED (during the application of the indirect effect), but medium wavelength information (usually provided by gravity measurements) is missing altogether. Although the exact accuracy of the geoid in the data gaps is difficult to ascertain, the quoted accuracy for EGM96 (which is the primary source of geoid information in the data gaps) is below 50 cm in these areas. The gravity values are based on the International Gravity Standardization Net 1971 (IGSN71). The geoid heights are referred to the Geodetic Reference System 1980 (GRS80) ellipsoid, centered at the origin of the International Terrestrial Reference Frame 1994 (ITRF94(1996.0)). Additional information is available at: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/GEOID/MEXICO97/ We are particularly grateful to NGA (former National Imagery and Mapping Agency) for their assistance and their data contributions.
