Popis

The proposed project contributes to aspects of all three published Task Statements in AFP 20033. It addresses local scientific knowledge gaps that are significant to fire management program implementation in coastal marshes of the southeastern United States through an administrative study. Modern fire management continues to employ only dormantseason burns in these habitats, in part due to concerns about potential negative effects on wildlife, especially seaside sparrows. In recent years, land managers and scientists have noted the need for research on shifting season of burn in coastal marshes. Study sites will be in the southeastern U.S. The results of the research are expected to increase understanding of the ecology of more than 2,500 miles of coastline from Texas to the Carolinas. The project will also provide a template for research and management efforts in coastal habitats of other regions of the country. The study will examine the initial effects of shifting from dormant to growingseason prescribed fires. Targets for evaluation include fire behavior, fuel load, and fuel reduction; vegetation structure and composition; relative use by Scotts seaside sparrow and other secretive marsh bird species; and effects on potential food sources arthropods and seeds. The fires and effects on vegetation will be measured using techniques based on the NFS Fire Monitoring Handbook and the draft FWS Fuel and Fire Effects Monitoring Guide. Habitat use by Scotts seaside sparrow will be documented using censuses of singing males. Arthropods will be sampled using Dvac suction collection and sticky traps. The data collected during this study, will be used to make recommendations for future fire management of coastal marshes and associated bird species of special conservation concern. The proposed research will expand our knowledge of the effects of fire and greatly enhance both fuel reduction and conservation in southeastern coastal salt marshes.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Metropolitan Divisions subdivide a Metropolitan Statistical Area containing a single core urban area that has a population of at least 2.5 million to form smaller groupings of counties or equivalent entities. Not all Metropolitan Statistical Areas with urban areas of this size will contain Metropolitan Divisions. Metropolitan Division are defined by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and consist of one or more main counties or equivalent entities that represent an employment center or centers, plus adjacent counties associated with the main county or counties through commuting ties. Because Metropolitan Divisions represent subdivisions of larger Metropolitan Statistical Areas, it is not appropriate to rank or compare Metropolitan Divisions with Metropolitan and Micropolitan Statistical Areas. The Metropolitan Divisions boundaries are those defined by OMB based on the 2010 Census and published in 2013.

Makel Engineering, Inc. (MEI) and Colorado School of Mines (CSM) propose to develop an integrated hydrogen generator and purifier system for conversion of in-situ produced hydrocarbons to fuel-cell-grade hydrogen. NASA is currently developing several In Situ Resources Utilization (ISRU) Systems. One technology commonly found in most ISRU scenarios is the use of the Sabatier reaction and water electrolysis to produce methane and oxygen. Due to the various penalties of storing gaseous hydrogen on-board the rover, it is advantageous to carry methane instead of hydrogen and to have an on-board reformer to produce hydrogen on-demand for the fuel cell. Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells hydrogen with very low carbon monoxide content (typically less than 10 ppm). The proposed system will combine microchannel microreformer technology for hydrogen production with palladium membranes technology for hydrogen purification and separation in an integrated hydrogen production system, resulting in optimized size and energy efficiency. This proposal will seek to establish the feasibility of using compact microchannel/membrane reactor systems to provide purified hydrogen for fuel cell power systems for applications such as robotic and crew transportation rovers.

Long-term acute care is a hospital defined by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) as a licensed general acute care hospital providing care for patients with medically complex conditions requiring an average length of stay for all patients of greater than 25 days. This table shows the incidence rates of hospital onset Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) and use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) reported by California long-term acute care (LTAC) hospitals. The hospital onset (HO) CDI rate is calculated by dividing the number of HO CDI cases by the total inpatient days. The rates are not risk adjusted and may reflect factors in the hospital that can affect the occurrence of CDI, such as transmission of the C. difficile bacteria and use of antimicrobials. CDI cases are classified as HO when the positive stool sample is obtained on day four or later during the hospital stay. Differences in rates for LTAC hospitals can result from differences in laboratory testing methodology, patient populations, infection and transmission prevention practices, antibiotic utilization, and/or community onset rates of CDI. HO CDI rate in LTAC hospitals is provided separately from the rates in rehabilitation acute care hospitals. Patients in LTAC hospitals have longer lengths of stay, an established risk factor for CDI. Also, specifically for LTAC and rehabilitation acute care hospitals, we include whether a hospital uses the polymerase chain reaction test (PCR) to detect CDI. In this table, hospital rates of CDI for LTAC hospitals have not been adjusted to account for the differences in sensitivity between PCR and other laboratory testing methods; therefore, rates from hospitals using different types of laboratory tests are not comparable. LiDAR data is a remotely sensed high resolution elevation data collected by an airborne platform. The LiDAR sensor uses a combination of laser range finding, GPS positioning, and inertial measurement technologies. The LiDAR systems collect data point clouds that are used to produce highly detailed Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the earth's terrain, man-made structures and vegetation. The task required the LiDAR data to be collected at a nominal pulse spacing (NPS) of 1.0 meter. The final products include first, last, and at least one intermediate return LAS, full classified LAS and one (1) meter pixel raster DEMs of the bare-earth surface in ERDAS IMG Format. The LiDAR data was acquired from February 07, 2012 to March 05, 2012.

During this exploration, the first comprehensive high-resolution multi-beam sonar and seismic reflection survey of the Northern San Andreas Fault (NSAF) was completed. When combined, data from these two complementary geophysical surveys will provide an unprecedented high-resolution 3D visualization of the fault system. In addition, digital photographs and photomosaics obtained with a hovering autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) will provide the collaborative team of geologists and biologists with direct observation of the seafloor and associated biological communities at selected sites. Mapping and imaging the NSAF at geo-referenced spatial scales from kilometers to meters will support ongoing studies and discoveries on the nature of the NSAF and contribute to the assessment of marine habitats in the California Current Ecosystem. Finally, the exploration provides a case study and outreach opportunity for conducting a green oceanographic research project. The AUV imagery data from this project is archived with the AUV group at the NWFSC. The seafloor mapping data from this project is archived at Oregon State University in the Active Tectonics and Seafloor Mapping Lab, http://activetectonics.coas.oregonstate.edu/ Optical Information collected by the SeaBED Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV)
