Current NASA programs, such as Adaptable, Deployable Entry and Placement Technology (ADEPT) and Woven Thermal Protection Systems (WTPS) are looking to fill a gap in ablative TPS for future missions to Venus and Saturn, human missions beyond Lunar, and Mars Sample Return Missions. Both of these programs rely on the use of 3D woven carbon fiber preforms. Therefore, there is a need to be able to predict the properties and performance of a woven material. Validation of predictive modeling tools would allow for the use of these tools to design and optimize the 3D weaves, significantly reducing the cost of fabrication and testing of a variety of configurations. While there are proven tools for the prediction of laminate composite properties, textile composites are relatively new materials and much less effort has been focused on modeling this class of materials. Materials Research & Design (MR&D) has experience in working with and designing 3D woven preforms for use in composite material reinforcement and has developed a suite of analytical tools to define the detailed geometry of 3D woven preforms for use in calculating material properties. However, these tools currently do not have the capability to predict material strengths. Within the proposed Phase I effort, MR&D will enhance the existing tool by incorporating the ability to calculate material strengths of 3D weaves. Strength predictions will be made for two different 3D woven hybrid preform reinforced phenolic panels and compared to measured test data for validation.

Conductivity Temperature and Depth (CTD) measurements were collected aboard the R/V Seward Johnson, Cruise 1, Leg 3, to determine physical oceanographic parameters of the water column, and in some cases used to help guide sample collection as part of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill sampling effort. Temperature, conductivity/salinity, depth, dissolved oxygen, and fluorometry data were collected onboard the Seward Johnson, Cruise 1, Leg 3. The final product is a series of NetCDF files containing every CTD cast that has been processed and quality checked.

Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are an integral component in oil-spill contingency planning and assessment. They serve as a source of information in the event of an oil spill incident.ESI maps contain three types of information: shoreline habitats (classified according to their sensitivity to oiling), sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Most often, this information is plotted on 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles, although in the Alaska ESI maps, USGS topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 are used, and in other ESI maps, NOAA charts have been used as the base map. Collections of these maps, grouped by state or a logical geographic area, are published as ESI atlases. Digital data have been published for most of the U.S. shoreline, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

This report provides the results of the Refuge Vulnerability Assessment RVA for the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge and Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge Complex Refuge Complex. The purpose of the RVA is to assess the cumulative impacts of stressors on refuge resources over multiple timeframes and develop mitigation and adaptation strategies to address those impacts. Both spatial and nonspatial models were used to assess resource response to land use and environmental stressors. Spatial models looked specifically at snapshots in time at 2010 and 2025, while nonspatial assessments produced continuous results from 2000 to 2100.

The National Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS) Atmospheric Sounding Testbed (NAST) is a suite of airborne infrared and microwave spectrometers, being developed for the Integrated Program Office (IPO), that will be flown on the NASA high altitude ER-2 aircraft as part of the risk reduction effort for NPOESS. In addition to their stand-alone scientific value, data from these airborne instruments will be used to simulate possible satellite-based radiance measurements, therefore enabling experimental validation of instrument system specifications and data processing techniques for future advanced atmospheric remote sensors (e.g., the proposed sounder component for NPOESS).

This narrative report details the conditions and management of Stillwater Wildlife Management Area from May through August of 1949. The report begins with general information about weather and water conditions on the refuge. The second section of the report describes wildlife on the refuge and includes migratory birds, upland game birds, big game animals, fur animals, predaceous birds, and fish. The report then covers the refuges development and maintenance projects. The last two sections of the report describe field investigations and research and public relations; a list of refuge visitors is given. Finally, NR forms and photographs are provided.

This data set provides the results of (1) the physical and chemical characterization of streams and (2) comparable chemical analyses of extracted soil water in the Aldeia River basin at Fazenda Nova Vida, a large cattle ranch 50 km from the city of Ariquemes, in central Rondonia, Brazil, from 1994-2001. Data are provided on the stream beds including cross-sectional depth and stream bed surface type. Stream discharge is reported. Streamwater was sampled and analyzed periodically over the eight year duration of the study at numerous steam locations. Soil solution samples were collected at the same frequency with lysimeters placed at 30 cm and 100 cm depths on the floodplain and at upland forest and pasture sites in the Aldeia River watershed. There are five comma-delimited data files in this data set.
