Data were collected by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) from 15 July 1971 to 04 August 1971. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Station Data II Output Format (SD2). Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/sd2.html. The SD2 format contains physical-chemical oceanographic data recorded at discrete depth levels. Most of the observations were made using multi-bottle Nansen casts or other types of water samplers. A small amount (about 5 percent) were obtained using electronic CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) or STD (salinity-temperature-depth) recorders. The CTD/STD data were reported to NODC at depth levels equivalent to Nansen cast data, however, and have been processed and stored the same as the Nansen data. Cruise information (e.g., ship, country, institution), position, date, and time, and reported for each station. The principal measured parameters and temperature and salinity , but dissolved oxygen, phosphate, total phosphorus, silicate, nitrate, nitrite, and pH may be reported. Meteorological conditions at the time of the cast (e.g., air temperature and pressure, wind, waves) may also be reported, as well as auxiliary data such as water color (Forel-Ule scale), water transparency (Secchi disk depth), and depth to bottom. Values of density (sigma-t) sound velocity, and dynamic depth anomaly are computed from measured parameters. Each station contains the measurements taken at the observed depth levels, but also includes data values interpolated to a set of standard depth levels.

This data set contains vector polygons representing the boundaries of all hardcopy cartographic products produced as part of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) for Alabama. This data set comprises a portion of the ESI data for Alabama. ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

NODC Accession 0115200 includes meteorological, fish examination and biological data collected aboard the CHARTER/FISHING BOATS during cruises GP0108, GP0207-01, GP0207-02, GP0401-01, GP0401-02 and MF0310 in the Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific Ocean from 2001-07-18 to 2004-11-08. These data include SPECIES IDENTIFICATION - ORGANISM LENGTH, SPECIES IDENTIFICATION, WATER DEPTH, SPECIES IDENTIFICATION - LIFE STAGE, SPECIES IDENTIFICATION - SEX, SPECIES IDENTIFICATION - WET WEIGHT, INDIVIDUAL FISH EXAMINATION - PARASITE OCCURRENCE and STOMACH CONTENTS - CONTENT WEIGHT. The instruments used to collect these data include trawl. These data were collected by Edward D. Cokelet of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Alex C Wertheimer and Edward V. Farley of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Alaska Fisheries Science Center and Jamal Hasan Moss of University of Washington and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration - Alaska Fisheries Science Center as part of NEP. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-10-30. The following is the text of the abstract provided by BCO-DMO: GLOBEC 2000: Factors Affecting the Distribution of Juvenile Salmon in the Gulf of Alaska J. Helle (NMFS/AFSC, Auke Bay Laboratory) E. D. Cokelet (Pacific Marine Environmentla Laboratory), E. V. Farley, Jr. (NMFS/AFSC, Auke Bay Laboratory), A. B. Hollowed (NMFS/AFSC), P. J. Stabeno (Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory) "Remarkable changes in atmospheric, oceanic and biological conditions have occurred in recent decades in the North Pacific Ocean including declines in the marine survival of some salmon stocks. Fishery scientists generally agree that in the first few months after leaving freshwater, salmon survival and growth are linked to oceanic variability. The purpose of this research is to focus National Marine Fisheries Service studies on the GLOBEC region, augment oceanographic measurements and determine what biological and physical factors influence the distribution of juvenile salmon. Three general hypotheses are explored in this proposal: (1) juvenile salmon prefer the buoyancy-driven Alaska Coastal Current (ACC) at the head of the Gulf of Alaska, (2) they associate with oceanic temperature, salinity, current and prey fields, and (3) they migrate landward of Kodiak Island in the ACC rather than seaward in the Alaskan Stream. Annual, summer cruises aboard a chartered fishing vessel will catch juvenile salmon on 10 transects between Yakutat Bay and Kodiak Island. The vessel will be outfitted with a thermosalinograph to measure sea-surface temperature and salinity, and with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) - each operating continuously for fine-scale resolution. Modeled tidal currents will be removed from ADCP measurements to reveal the mean flow fields. At each trawl site, temperature and salinity profiles will provide water-column properties, and bongo-net hauls will give zooplankton distributions. Stomach samples from juvenile salmonids will be analyzed in the laboratory for diet composition and compared with zooplankton distributions. Analysis of salmon otoliths for hatchery thermal marks and Genetic Stock Identification techniques will be used to determine the home stream of hatchery and wild stocks in the Gulf of Alaska and their distribution with respect to oceanographic regimes. Retrospective analysis of catch per unit effort versus oceanographic and prey factors will reveal what affects the distribution of pink, chum, coho and sockeye salmon in the study region. NGDC builds and distributes high-resolution, coastal digital elevation models (DEMs) that integrate ocean bathymetry and land topography to support NOAA's mission to understand and predict changes in Earth's environment, and conserve and manage coastal and marine resources to meet our Nation's economic, social, and environmental needs. They can be used for modeling of coastal processes (tsunami inundation, storm surge, sea-level rise, contaminant dispersal, etc.), ecosystems management and habitat research, coastal and marine spatial planning, and hazard mitigation and community preparedness.

These data were collected 2011-2012 from select locations on St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John (U.S. VI) in order to 1) to spatially characterize and monitor the distribution, abundance, and size of both reef fishes and macro-invertebrates (conch, lobster, Diadema); 2) to relate this information to in situ data collected on water quality and associated habitat parameters; 3) to use this information to establish the knowledge base necessary for enacting management decisions in a spatial setting; 4) to establish the efficacy of those management decisions; 5) to work with the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program to develop data collection standards and easily implemented methodologies for transference to other agencies and to work toward standardizing data collection throughout the U.S. states and territories; and to 6) conduct a baseline characterization of fish and benthic communities. This work was variously conducted in collaboration with the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources, the Nature Conservancy, the University of Miami, the U.S. Department of Interior National Park Service and the University of the Virgin Islands. These data include benthic habitat data (benthic coverage type, species, percent cover), reef fish survey data (habitat and species), and macroinvertebrate counts with included metadata in FGDC (Federal Geographic Data Committee) format. Data are in ASCII, Microsoft EXCEL, and .csv format and are in individual subfolders by year and island location.

This dataset contains data collected by electronic tags (Pop-up Satellite Archival Transmitting) attached to Salvelinus malma (Dolly Varden trout) in the Wulik River, Alaska, in 2012 and 2013. Dolly Varden make up an important component of subsistence fisheries in northern Alaskan communities. While it is known that Dolly Varden may be broadly distributed throughout a wide range in the Pacific Ocean during the summer, their distribution in the Chukchi Sea is unknown. Because of this knowledge gap, fisheries managers are unable to assess potential risks of human activities, such as gas and oil exploration on Dolly Varden. This project (attaching PSAT tags to Dolly Varden) was an attempt to address this knowledge gap and provide baseline information on their oceanic distribution, and depth and temperature occupancy.

The Submarine Arctic Science Program, SCICEX, is a federal interagency collaboration among the operational Navy, research agencies, and the marine research community to use nuclear-powered submarines for scientific studies of the Arctic Ocean. Unlike surface ships, submarines have the unique ability to operate and take measurements regardless of sea ice cover, weather conditions, and time of year. This allows for a broad and comprehensive investigation of an entire ocean basin. The goal of the program is to acquire comprehensive data about Arctic sea ice, water properties (biological, chemical, and hydrographic), and water depth (bathymetry) to improve our understanding of the Arctic Ocean basin and its role in the Earth's climate system.
