Popis

Sablefish, also known as black cod, are being studied with the eventual goal of closing the entire life cycle in captivity. Adult sablefish are captured in the wild off shore from Washington state and transported to the Manchester Research Station. Adults are assessed for maturation using ultrasound visualization of their gonads. When sufficient gametogenesis is observed, females and males are injection to induce final maturation and spermiation. Fertilized gametes are collected, incubated through hatching and yolk absorption, and then placed in tanks for feeding. Studies are being conducted to determine optimal conditions for early development. Juveniles are reared and used in studies of fish nutrition, growth, and reproduction. Studies of captive sablefish expand our knowledge of life history and potentially provide a new species for domestic aquaculture. Fertilization rate, symmetry, hatching
