This 30-meter resolution raster data set of land cover for the conterminous United States ("NLCDep0306") was designed to describe conditions representative of the year 2000 and is the result of overlaying enhanced 1992 National Land Cover Data with 1990 and 2000 population data at the block group geographic level. Any area (excluding water, developed land, or wetlands) with population density of less than 1,000 people per square mile in 1990 and at least 1,000 people per square mile in 2000 was reclassified as "newly urbanized" land in the derivative product. Areas of water, developed land, or wetlands existing in the original national land-cover data set were preserved. This data set supersedes the one called "Enhanced National Land Cover Data 1992 revised with 2000 population data to indicate urban development between 1992 and 2000" ("NLCDep0905") dated September 2005. NLCDep0905 coded any area having 2000 population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile as being recently urbanized and did not consider that the area could already have been urbanized in 1990. The approach used in developing NLCDep0905 was determined to have misclassified lands that already were urban in 1990 as newly urbanized and therefore overrepresented new urban land.

This data set contains gridded brightness temperatures and sea ice concentrations for both polar regions. It spans the period from October 1978 through August 1987, when the Nimbus-7 SMMR scanner was turned off. The data were collected every other day at 6.60, 10.69, 18.00, 21.00 and 37.00 GHz. Due to spacecraft power limitations, the scanner operated only on alternate days. There are usually at least foutreen days of coverage per month, although major data gaps occurred during the month of August. In August 1982, the following days are missing for both polar regions: 4th, 8th, and 16th; in August 1984, the 13th through the 23rd are missing for both polar regions; and in August 1985, the 6th through 8th are missing for the Southern Hemisphere. Brightness temperature and sea ice concentration grids have 25 x 25 km grid elements in polar stereographic projection. Volume 7 contains all SMMR sea ice concentrations for both polar regions, plus five months of brightness temperature grids for the North polar region. Brightness temperature grids are stored as 16-bit integers, one day of brightness temperature data is 0.27 mbytes for the North polar region, 0.21 mbytes for the South. Ice grids are stored as 8-bit integers. Files contain 136192 bytes and 104912 bytes for the North and South respectively. The NASA Team Algorithm (Cavalieri et al. 1984, Gloersen and Cavalieri 1986) was used to calculate ice concentrations from the brightness temperatures. The data were produced by Dr. P. Gloersen, NASA/GSFC, Oceans and Ice Branch, and are available via FTP. Notice to Data Users: SMMR TCT tapes comprised the input data set, unlike the SMMR Digital Media product distributed by NSIDC in 1979.

Popis

This data set contains Carbon Dioxide (CO2) column averaged dry air mole fraction for all soundings for which retrieval was attempted. These are the highest-level products made available by the ACOS Project, from algorithm build version 2.9 The GOSAT team at JAXA produces GOSAT TANSO-FTS Level 1B (L1B) data products for internal use and for distribution to collaborative partners, such as ESA and NASA. These calibrated products are augmented by the ACOS Project with additional geolocation information and further corrections. These ACOS Level 1B products (with calibrated radiances and geolocation) are the input to the ACOS Level 2 production process. Even though the GES DISC is not publicly distributing Level 1B ACOS products, it should be known that changes in this version are affecting both Level 1B and Level 2 data. An important enhancement in Level1B will address the degradation in the number of quality-passed soundings in v2.8. Elimination of many systematic biases, and better agreement with TCCON (Total Carbon Column Observing Network), is expected in Level 2 retrievals. The key changes to the L2 algorithm include scaling the O2-A band spectroscopy (reducing XCO2 bias by 4 or 5 ppm); using interpolation with the instrument lineshape [ ILS ] (reducing XCO2 bias by 1.5 ppm); and fitting a zero level offset to the A-band. Users have to also carefully familiarize themselves with the disclaimer in the new documentation. An important element to note are the updates on data screening. Although a Master Quality Flag is provided in the data product, further analysis of a larger set of data has allowed the science team to provide an updated set of screening criteria. These are listed in the data user's guide, and are recommended instead of the Master Quality Flag. Lastly, users should continue to carefully observe and weigh information from three important flags: sounding_qual_flag - quality of input data provided to the retrieval processing outcome_flag - retrieval quality based upon certain internal thresholds (not thoroughly evaluated) master_quality_flag - four possible values: "Good", "Caution" and "Bad", and "Failed", as determined from other flags in the L2 product The short name for this data type is ACOS_L2S.

The Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) project is considering several approaches to discovering planets orbiting stars far from earth and assessing their suitability to support life. One of these approaches is based on a coronagraph design operating in the visible wavelength regime, which requires both very high surface quality, large aperture, telescope optics and advanced optical systems to reject direct, scattered and diffracted starlight that is on the order of 1x109 brighter than the light reflected from the planet. The project has the need for advanced optical modeling and design tools that include physical optical calculations to support propagation results at a contrast level of 1x10-11 at the image plane of the coronagraph. The CODE V software is the most advanced software available for a wide variety of state of the art optical engineering tasks, and would be ideally suited for the TPF project once the proposed capabilities are integrated. Optical Research Associates proposes to extend capabilities of a newly researched method for beam propagation to support the optical system modeling needs of the TPF coronagraph project. The result will be an optical design and analysis tool to provide another means for predicting the performance of this important astronomical asset.

<p>Natural User Interface (NUI) is a term used to describe a number of technologies such as speech recognition, multi-touch, and kinetic interfaces. Gesture and voice control are two exciting computer input modalities for the NUI. Some believe that NUI is the next step forward from the traditional graphical user interface (GUI), which employs a mouse and keyboard as the primary means of input. The goal of NUI is to develop interfaces that do not have a steep learning curve and the interactions with these interfaces are “natural” and intuitive to the user.</p><p>One disadvantage of current GUIs is that they require the users to be physically near an input device in order to interact with the system. With the NUI, however, through using voice and gesture commands, the user is able to interact with the system <em>anywhere</em> they want within the defined work environment. Such “Interface Anywhere” gesture ability is achievable using infrared technology. The voice recognition portion is achievable through array microphones and Kinect software. Our NUI system of choice for this proof of concept is the Microsoft Kinect sensor. The heart of the system and what makes gesture recognition possible is the Kinect’s skeleton tracking ability. The Kinect contains an infrared projector and receiver, a normal RGB camera, and an array of four microphones. The system tracks multiple users in x-, y-, and z-space. Based on the depth information, the Kinect generates a skeleton using joint position.</p>

This report summarizes a study done on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to determine which habitats moose prefer to calve in. The majority of observations of female moose,Alces alces with recentlyborn calves have been in open, bogmeadow, black spruce, Picea mariana, habitats on the Kenai National Moose Range, but many moose probably calve in other areas where they are more difficult to observe. Frequent aerial surveys over the MooseChickaloon River Area during the calving period from 1957 to 1970 revealed maximum numbers of observed cows in the calving area in 1964, or 17 years after a major wildfire burned through the area. Numbers of observed cows declined after several years of antlerless seasons and several severe winters but increased again after antlerless seasons were suspended and winters moderated. Numbers of observed calves paralleled numbers of observed cows. Maximum twinning rates declined from a high of 46 percent in 1962 to 7 percent in 1966 but increased to 48 percent in 1969. Twinning rates appeared related to forage conditions, mild winters and moose density. General observations and observed numbers of calves suggest two birth peaks may have occurred in the 1960s, one in early June and another in early July. Population estimates suggest generally less than 20 percent of the refuges moose population calve in the MooseChickaloon River Area.

State Legislative Districts (SLDs) are the areas from which members are elected to State legislatures. The SLDs embody the upper (senate) and lower (house) chambers of the state legislature. Nebraska has a unicameral legislature and the District of Columbia has a single council, both of which the Census Bureau treats as upper-chamber legislative areas for the purpose of data presentation; there are no data by SLDL for either Nebraska or the District of Columbia. A unique three-character census code, identified by State participants, is assigned to each SLD within a state. In Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, and Puerto Rico, the Redistricting Data Program (RDP) participant did not define the SLDs to cover all of the state or state equivalent area. In these areas with no SLDs defined, the code "ZZZ" has been assigned, which is treated as a single SLD for purposes of data presentation. The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The boundaries of the 2014 State legislative districts were provided by state-level participants through the RDP and reflect the districts used to elect members in or prior to the November 2014 election.

The study documented the interaction between hydrology and the biological dynamics within a single spring season at Lisbon Bottom in 1999. The study goal was to provide information necessary for resource managers to develop management strategies for this and other units of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Researchers studied the hydrology, limnology, and biological dynamics of zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, fish and waterbird communities. Lisbon Bottom is one of several parcels of 1993 flooddamaged land that was purchased from willing sellers by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Lisbon Bottom is a loop bend in the river near Glasgow in Howard County, Missouri between approximately river mile RM 213 to RM 219. Flooding at Lisbon in 1993 and 1995 breeched local levees and created a diverse wetland complex.

Underwater Site 10P was established off Rose Atoll, American Samoa by Dr. James Maragos, U.S. Fish Wildlife Service, on July 31, 1999. The site was originally called Site D and later renamed Site 10P. With a start point meter 0 at latitude 14 33.075S longitude 168 09.622W, a series of metal stakes were pounded into the substrate to delineate a 50meter line that could be relocated and reassessed on future surveys. A fiberglass tape was unrolled along the line marked by the stakes and a series of photographs was taken of the benthos in consecutive 1metersquare 1m x 1m quadrats, using a Nikon RS camera with 35mm colorpositive slide film in an underwater housing mounted atop a 1metersquare 1m x 1m quadrat. The colorpositive slides were later scanned 600dpi using the Epson V750 scanner and software. The overall goal was to acquire data from the photographs and analyze and present quantitative data in a manner to be useful for scientists and refuge management. Each image is labeled with a 3letter location code ROS, date 31July99, site number 10P, and meter interval along the transect line e.g., 56M. The software program SigmaScan Pro 5.0 was used to analyze each image. Analysis was completed by a single observer, Alison Veit. For each photoquadrat, the anthozoan colonies were identified scleractinian genera Montipora, Acropora, Favia, Favites, Montastrea, Goniastrea, and the maximum diameter cm of each colony determined. The center of each colony had to fall within the photoquadrat frame in order to be counted for a photoquadrat. If the colony extended beyond one photoquadrat, one diameter was determined and counted in the photoquadrat in which the center of the colony was found. After all the anthozoan colonies in the photoquadrat had been measured, the data were binned into 7 size classes 15 cm, 610 cm, 1120 cm, 2140 cm, 4180 cm, 81160 cm, 160 cm. A visual estimate of percent coral cover in each quadrat was also recorded.
