SOAs give an improved basis for comparison throughout the country because the units are more similar in size of population than, for example, electoral wards. There are 333 SOAs in Warwickshire with a population of between 1,000 - 2,000 people.

There are various types of sensitive areas and their type will influence the form of tertiary treatment provided: for example bathing and shellfish waters sensitive areas will be protected by UV treatment, and waters adversely affected by nutrients in discharges will receive phosphorus and/or nitrogen reduction.

Summary
Description
Approximately half the 12.7 billion cubic metres of water abstracted in 2006-07 in England and Wales was for public water supply, with the remainder largely accounted for in cooling uses by the electricity generation sector and in the agricultural sector. Why is this important –predictions of more changeable weather systems in the future will put pressure on our water supply. More efficient and sustainable ways of using water in order to have a secure water supply are needed.
