Adults are defined as 18 years of age and older. The CDC defines a "Current Smoker" as an adult who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes (5 packs) in their lifetime and currently smokes either "Every Day" or "Some Days." BRFSS data methodology changed in 2011; therefore, 2011 and after is not comparable to 2010 data and before.

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) is a study that is part of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study program; program data is available since 1998-99 at . ECLS-B (http://nces.ed.gov/ecls/birth.asp) is a longitudinal study that is designed to provide policy makers, researchers, child care providers, teachers, and parents with detailed information about children's early life experiences. The study was conducted using multiple data collection methods (computer-assisted in-person interviews, computer-assisted telephone interviews, self-administered questionnaires, and direct observation) to collect information about children's characteristics, behaviors, development, and experiences from the adults who were important in the children's lives, including mothers, fathers, early care and education providers, and teachers. Direct child assessments were used to measure children's development, knowledge, and skills from the time the children were about 9 months old. A nationally representative sample of approximately 14,000 children born in the U.S. in 2001 was fielded. Key statistics produced from ECLS-B focus on children's health, development, care, and education during the formative years from birth through kindergarten entry.

Description

The NCEP Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) was initially completed for the 31-year period from 1979 to 2009, in January 2010. The CFSR was designed and executed as a global, high resolution, coupled atmosphere-ocean-land surface-sea ice system to provide the best estimate of the state of these coupled domains over this 31-year period. The CFSR has also been extended as an operational, real time product into the future. New features of the CFSR include: (1) coupling of atmosphere and ocean during the generation of the 6 hour guess field; (2) an interactive sea-ice model; and (3) assimilation of satellite radiances by the Grid-point Statistical Interpolation (GSI) scheme over the entire period. The CFSR global atmosphere resolution is approximately 38 km (T382) with 64 levels extending from the surface to 0.26 hPa. The global ocean's latitudinal spacing is 0.25 deg at the equator, extending to a global 0.5 deg beyond the tropics, with 40 levels to a depth of 4737m. The global land surface model has four4 soil levels and the global sea ice model has 3 layers. The CFSR atmospheric model has observed variations in carbon dioxide (CO2) over the 1979-2009 period, together with changes in aerosols and other trace gases and solar variations. Most available in-situ and satellite observation data were included in the CFSR. Satellite-based radiance observations were bias corrected with spin-up runs at full resolution, taking into account variable CO2 concentrations. This procedure enabled smooth transitions of the observation record due to evolutionary changes in satellite observing systems. The CFSR atmospheric, oceanic and land surface output products are available at an hourly time resolution and at a 0.5 deg x 0.5 deg latitude and longitude resolution. In total, there are 10 data products available from the National Climatic Data Center that make up the CFS Reanalysis collection: MON - Monthly Means; TIME - Parameter Timeseries; PGB - 3-D Pressure Level Data; FLX - Surface and Radiative Fluxes; OCN - 3-D Ocean Data; IPV - 3-D Isentropic Level Data; DIAB - 3-D Diabatic Heating Data; GRBLOW - Low-Resolution Data; HIC - High-Res Initial Conditions; LIC - Low-Res Initial Conditions. All data are in GRIB-2 format, except for the initial condition data which are in native binary formats. Total CFSR data volume is approximately 200 TB.

Description

This digital data release consists of an ARC/INFO grid and associated INFO tables. The grid is called MUID and has STATSGO (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1994) soil mapping unit identifiers gridded on a 1-kilometer resolution for the conterminous United States. The INFO tables have soil characteristics data in them. The ITEMS in the tables are weighted average values for several soil characteristics in the STATSGO data base. The weighted average values were computed by aggregating the soil layers and components in the data base. The INFO tables are called MUID.LAYER, MUID.COMP, MUID.KFACT, MUID.TFACT, and MUID.WEG. The INFO tables can be related or joined to the MUID grid or to individual State coverages (grids or polygons) of MUIDs. Joining or relating the tables to the MUID grid creates 1-kilometer resolution grids of the soil characteristics for the conterminous United States. The soil characteristics in MUID.LAYER are permeability (PERML and PERMH in the STATSGO data base), available water capacity (AWCL and AWCH), bulk density (BDL and BDH), and organic matter (OML and OMH). The soil characteristics in MUID.COMP are slope (SLOPEL and SLOPEH), depth to seasonally high water table (WTDEPL and WTDEPH), and depth to bedrock (ROCKDEPL and ROCKDEPH). The soil characteristic in MUID.KFACT is the soil erodibility factor (KFACT), the soil characteristic in MUID.TFACT is the soil loss tolerance factor (TFACT), and the soil characteristic in MUID.WEG is the wind erosion group (WEG). The MUID grid and INFO tables were created with a set of arc macro language (aml) and Fortran programs. Send electronic mail to dwolock@usgs.gov to obtain copies of the computer code. Description

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a statistical measure of change, over time, of the prices of goods and services in major expenditure groups--such as food, housing, apparel, transportation, and medical care--typically purchased by urban consumers. Essentially, it compares the cost of a sample "market basket" of goods and services in a specific month relative to the cost of the same "market basket" in an earlier reference period. This reference period is designated as the base period. The revised CPI introduced by the BLS in 1998 includes indexes for two populations; urban wage earners and clerical workers (CW), and all urban consumers (CU). As a result of the revision, both the CW and the CU utilize updated expenditure weights based upon data tabulated from three years (1982, 1983, and 1984) of the Consumer Expenditure Survey and incorporate a number of technical improvements, including an updated and revised item structure.

The geographic information system (GIS) format spatial data set of vegetation for Glacier National Park (GNP) was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)-National Park Service (NPS) Vegetation Mapping Program (VMP) for the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park (WGIPP). The WGIPP covers an area of approximately 458,556 ha (1,133,116 acres), and includes approximately 30.5 km (19 miles) of the Canada-United States International Boundary. The United States portion of this park (GNP) is located in northwestern Montana, in the Rocky Mountains. The map classification scheme used to create the vegetation data set is designed to represent local plant communities at the finest level possible using the National Vegetation Classification Scheme. Physiognomic information was also recorded, including tree height, canopy density, and coverage patterns. The vegetation data set was developed by interpreting aerial photographs collected in 1999, supplemented with aerial photography collected in 1997-98 and extensive field surveys. Individuals who cooperated in this project include; USGS Center for Biological Informatics, USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center, NPS Glacier National Park, Parks Canada Waterton Lakes National Park, NatureServe, and the Montana Natural Heritage Program. The vegetation data are distributed as a geographic information system (GIS) shapefile data set, using Universal Transverse Mercator zone 12 mapping coordinates, North American Datum 1983.

Description

In response to the need and an intergovernmental commission for a high resolution and data-derived global ecosystem map, land surface elements of global ecological pattern were characterized in an ecophysiographic stratification of the planet. The stratification produced 3,923 terrestrial ecological land units (ELUs) at a base resolution of 250 meters. The ELUs were derived from data on land surface features in a three step approach. The first step involved acquiring or developing four global raster datalayers representing the primary components of ecosystem structure: bioclimate, landform, lithology, and land cover. These datasets generally represent the most accurate, current, globally comprehensive, and finest spatial and thematic resolution data available for each of the four inputs. The second step involved a spatial combination of the four inputs into a single, new integrated raster dataset where every cell represents a combination of values from the bioclimate, landforms, lithology, and land cover datalayers. This foundational global raster datalayer, called ecological facets (EFs), contains 47,650 unique combinations of the four inputs. The third step involved an aggregation of the EFs into the 3,923 ELUs.
