KalScott Engineering, and the subcontractor, Princeton University propose the development and demonstration of compact and robust methane sensor for small Unmanned Aerial Systems (s-UAS) by synthesizing state-of-the-art, laser-based detection methods with the rapidly increasing s-UAS market. The overall goal of this project is to develop and demonstrate (via flight test) laser-based flight-weight methane sensors. In Phase I, the sensor will be built and lab-tested, followed by initial flight tests on KalScott's Cessna 210. In Phase II, a refined version of the sensor will be built, and flight tested, first on the Cessna, and then on a small UAS.

Federal onshore lands contain an estimated 20 percent of the oil and 25 percent of the undiscovered natural gas resources in the United States (U.S. Bureau of Land Management, 2006) and the BLM has identified the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB) as an area with high potential for continued energy development (U.S. Bureau of Land Management, 2002). The UCRB drains portions of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming and is part of the largest river basin in the southwestern United States. A significant volume of known and potential oil and gas reserves lies in the sedimentary basins of the UCRB (Huffman, 1995; U.S. Geological Survey 2002a; U.S. Geological Survey 2002b; U.S. Geological Survey 2002c) and an average of 4,527 wells per year was started on Federal land in the five UCRB states in fiscal years (FY, October 1 to September 30) 2006 and 2007 (U.S. Bureau of Land Management 2008). An average of 2,462 wells per year were drilled between FY 2000 and 2005. 1,284 wells were drilled per year on average in the preceding 10 year period from FY 1990 to 1999. Increased drilling activity has raised concerns that land disturbance from drilling activity may have an affect on surface water quality in the basin. Existing and planned land disturbance data are not regularly or consistently compiled at the state or regional level. Regional-scale compilation, synthesis, and analysis of data defining energy development-related land disturbance and water quality in the UCRB may help to improve understanding of the potential cumulative effects of current and projected energy development on land cover changes in the basin. The location of known oil and gas wells was compiled from state oil and gas databases and merged into a single oil and gas well dataset for the UCRB. The reported status of each well was used to classify the well into two categories: disturbed or not disturbed. Disturbed wells are likely associated with land disturbance. The classified wells were used to estimate the location and extent of energy related land disturbance in the basin. The innovation proposed here is a computational framework for high performance, high fidelity computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to enable accurate, fast and robust simulation of unsteady turbulent, reacting or non-reacting flows involving real or ideal fluids. This framework will provide a state-of-the-art unsteady turbulent flow simulation capability by laying the foundation for the incorporation of Hybrid RANS-LES (HRLES) methods which are a blend of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approaches. This design and analysis tool will be built on a currently existing solver called Loci-STREAM which has been developed by the proposing firm under funding from NASA over the last four years. The work proposed here will result in a state-of-the-art design and analysis tool to enable the accurate modeling of small valves, turbopumps, combustion devices, etc. which constitute critical components of versatile space propulsion engines with deep throttling capability as part of NASA's Vision for Space Exploration Mission. Of particular relevance to NASA, this design and analysis tool will provide improved understanding and quantification of the time-varying, reacting flow environments in the thrust chamber assembly of space propulsion engines.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, has produced detailed geologic maps of the sea floor in Long Island Sound. These studies have built upon cooperative research with the State of Connecticut that was initiated in 1982. This research program is currently studying sea-floor sediment distribution, processes that control sediment distribution, nearshore environmental concerns, and the relation of benthic community structures to the sea-floor geology. Detailed maps of the sea floor are needed to aid in interpretation of the sea-floor geology. Therefore, sidescan-sonar data have been collected in areas of interest. Although these mosaics from NOAA surveys H11043, H11044, and H11045 in north-central Long Island Sound have been interpreted in prior reports, we have enhanced these three mosaics in order to minimize tonal artifacts created by the mismatching of backscatter in adjacent track lines. The enhanced mosaics provide a clearer image of the sea-floor geology.

Ecological indicators can facilitate Ecosystem-based Management, but only if targets for indicators exist. Because targets are an expression of the desired state of the ecosystem, establishing targets must include ecological understanding and societal values. This project will develop a unique approach for identifying scientifically rigorous ecosystem targets that explicitly consider social perspectives. Focusing on the PSP species and food web goal, we will: 1) Identify a set of critical ecosystem attributes, and use a food web model to examine changes to these attributes as a result of simulated changes of nearshore habitat and water quality; and, 2) Conduct social norm analyses in which stakeholders are asked to rate the desirability of a range of potential ecosystem conditions. This data set contains topographic/geomorphological data associated with the four Intensive Study Areas (ISAs) in the Northern Ecuadorian Amazon (northern Oriente) that are part of the University of North Carolina's Carolina Population Center (CPC) Ecuador Projects study. Study area boundaries were developed directly from 1:50,000 topographical maps. Point elevation features and 20-meter elevation contours were digitized from these same maps. Digital elevation models (DEMs) were derived from these elevation data and, in turn, terrain aspect and terrain slope were derived from the digital elevation models. Only boundary data were provided for the southwestern ISA. These data are provided in ESRI shapefile format and GeoTiff. There are six compressed (*.zip) data files with this data set.

Specific Phase I tasks include: (i) Develop GN&C-oriented and high-fidelity dynamic models for AR&D; (ii) Develop Optimal AR&D Algorithms under non-convex constraints; (iii) Develop Constrained Control Algorithms; (iv) Integrate the G&C Algorithms with Vision-based Navigation Algorithm; and (v) Carry out initial simulation testing & performance evaluation. Phase II will be focused on further maturation of the approach, rigorous Verification and Validation of the overall GUARD system, and its implementation on an experimental test bed at UTA. In 2006, a cooperative study was established to compile reliable data describing groundwater and surface-water interactions in the Elkhorn and Loup River Basins. The purpose of the study was to address state legislation that requires a sustainable balance between long term water supplies and uses of surface water and groundwater. A groundwater-flow model [hereinafter referred to as the Elkhorn-Loup Model (ELM)] was constructed as part of the first two phases of that study as a tool for understanding the effect of groundwater pumpage on stream base flow and the effects of management strategies on hydrologically connected groundwater and surface-water supplies. The third phase of the study was implemented to gain additional geologic knowledge and update the ELM with enhanced water-budget information and refined discretization of the model grid and stress periods. As part of that effort, the ELM is being reconstructed to include two vertical model layers, whereas phase-one and phase-two simulations (Peterson and others, 2008; Stanton and others, 2010) represented the aquifer system using one vertical model layer. The goal for defining the base of the upper model layer was to divide the model vertically so that the upper layer could have different water transmitting and storage characteristics than the lower layer. Texture descriptions were used in most cases to identify the depth in a test-hole, water-well, or surface-geophysical log at which dividing the aquifer produced contrasting texture characteristics for the upper and lower model layers. The study area covers approximately 30,000 square miles, and extends from the Niobrara River in the north to the Platte River in the south. The western boundary roughly coincides with the western boundary of the Upper Loup NRD, and the eastern boundary roughly coincides with the approximate location of the westernmost extent of glacial till in eastern Nebraska (University of Nebraska, 2005). This data release consists of a point shapefile attributed with values representing the elevation of the base of the upper layer of the two-layer phase-three Elkhorn-Loup Model (ELM) above the vertical datum (National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929).
