This digital data set defines the boundaries of the deserts of the southwestern United States. Those deserts include the Great Basin, Mojave, Colorado, and Sonoran Deserts as defined by Benson and Darrow (1981). The study by Benson and Darrow (1981) was a historical reference used to support development of the transient ground-water model of Death Valley regional ground-water flow system (DVRFS) completed in 2004 by the USGS (see "Larger Work Citation", Chapter A, page 8, for details).

The Environmental Agent Service (EAS) Registries is the information system encompassing the Ionizing Radiation Registry (IRR), the Agent Orange Registry (AOR), and the Gulf War Registry (GWR) which also includes related Depleted Uranium (DU) exams. These registries were originally developed using paper code sheets that were sent to the VA Austin Information Technology Center where typists converted to data files on the mainframe. The Registries have undergone a modernization and simplification effort that allows the entry of data via a web interface at https://vaww.registries.aac.va.gov/eas/ by staff at the VA medical centers. In compliance with the Federal Information Systems Management Act (FISMA) this is considered a single system of records with the three registry components i.e. IRR, AOR, GWR with DU that have been integrated into a single Oracle database. Please see individual Monograph entries for specific details on: Ionizing Radiation Registry (IRR), Agent Orange Registry (AOR), and the Gulf War Registry (GWR).

The State Cancer Profiles (SCP) web site provides statistics to help guide and prioritize cancer control activities at the state and local levels. SCP is a collaborative effort using local and national level cancer data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Registries (SEER). SCP address select types of cancer and select behavioral risk factors for which there are evidence-based control interventions. The site provides incidence, mortality and prevalence comparison tables as well as interactive graphs and maps and support data. The graphs and maps provide visual support for deciding where to focus cancer control efforts.

A line file representing locations of the pipeline infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico associated with the oil and gas industry is presented. These layers were modified from GIS data acquired from the U. S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) website. We note that pipelines are being added or modified continuously, thus regular updates of this database are required to know the true distribution of pipelines. The current layers are non-projected with coordinates in decimal degrees.

The 2008 Hospital Report Card was mandated by the FY08 Appropriations Act, and focused on Congressionally-mandated metrics applicable to general patient populations. The 2009 VHA Facility Quality and Safety Report report, not required by Congress, shifts to Veteran-centered metrics, and includes information related to infrastructure, care provided in outpatient and hospital settings, quality of care within given patient populations, accreditation status, patient satisfaction and patient outcomes for FY2008. The data in this report have been compiled from multiple sources throughout VHA. This dataset includes composite scores reflecting quality of care for outpatients (NEXUS) and inpatients (ORYX). Quality of outpatient care is further stratified by comparison of outpatient care by gender, age, and mental health diagnosis.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The primary legal divisions of most States are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, and municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The latter are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. In four States (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and thus constitute primary divisions of their States. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation. The Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: Municipios in Puerto Rico, Districts and Islands in American Samoa, Municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas is covered by counties or equivalent entities. The 2010 Census boundaries for counties and equivalent entities are as of January 1, 2010, primarily as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS).

Monthly global soil moisture, runoff, and evaporation data sets produced by the Leaky Bucket model at 0.5? ? 0.5? resolution for the period from 1948 to the present. The land model is a one?layer ?bucket? water balance model, while the driving input fields are Climate Prediction Center monthly global precipitation over land, which uses over 17,000 gauges worldwide, and monthly global temperature from GHCN-CAMS (Fan and Van den Dool 2008). The output consists of global monthly soil moisture, evaporation, and runoff, starting from January 1948. A distinguishing feature of this data set is that all fields are updated monthly, which greatly enhances utility for near real time purposes. Data validation shows that the land model does well; both the simulated annual cycle and interannual variability of soil moisture are reasonably good against the limited observations in different regions. Refer to these papers: Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2004), Climate Prediction Center global monthly soil moisture data set at 0.5? resolution for 1948 to present, J. Geophys. Res., 109, D10102, doi:10.1029/2003JD004345. Fan, Y. and H. van den Dool (2008), A global monthly land surface air temperature analysis for 1948?present, J. Geophys. Volume 4, Issue 3 of the Medicare and Medicaid Research Review includes three articles describing the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) developed risk adjustment methodology under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The ACA provides for a program of risk adjustment in the individual and small group markets using the HHS risk adjustment methodology, so as to compensate health insurance plans for differences in enrollee health mix so plan premiums reflect differences in scope of coverage and other plan factors, but not differences in health status. The methodology includes a risk adjustment model and a risk transfer formula. The article, Affordable Care Act Risk Adjustment - Overview, Context, and Challenges, describes the key program goal and issues in the HHS developed risk adjustment methodology and identifies key choices in how it responds to these issues, while The HHS-HCC Risk Adjustment Model for Individual and Small Group Markets under the Affordable Care Act, estimates differences in health risks taking into account the new population and scope of coverage. Risk Transfer Formula for Individual and Small Group Markets under the Affordable Care Act, describes how the transfer formula calculates balanced transfers intended to account for health risk differences while preserving permissible premium differences.
