Description

Physical, chemical, and other data from bottle, XBT, and CTD casts from the SHOYO and other platforms from North Pacific Ocean and other locations. Data were collected by the Maritime Safety Agency; Hydrographic Division (MSA) and other institutions from 01 November 1983 to 31 December 1987. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Station Data II Output Format (SD2) and the Universal Bathythermograph Output Format (UBT). Full format descriptions are available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/. The SD2 file format is used for physical-chemical oceanographic data recorded at discrete depth levels. Most of the observations were made using multi- bottle Nansen casts or other types of water samplers. A small amount (about 5%), were obtained using electronic CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) or STD (salinity-temperature-depth) recorders. The CTD/STD data were reported to NODC at depth levels equivalent to Nansen cast data, however, and have been processed and stored the same as the Nansen data. Cruise information, position, date and time are reported for each station. Each station contains the measurements taken at observed depth levels, but also includes data values interpolated to a set of standard depth levels. The UBT format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data records are comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. The XBT data files contain temperature values at originators defined depths. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. Special instruments permit measurements to be obtained to 1830 m. The following was inserted prior to recent edit. Supporting data could not be located. Electrokinetograph (GEK) data collected by the Japanese Ocean Data Center. These data were collected in December 1987 by DNP cruises in the western Pacific. Documentation includes the record format.

Description

The NOAA WAVEWATCH III® hindcast dataset comprises output fields from the monthly WAVEWATCH III® hindcast model runs conducted at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction. Each model run produces a collection of files containing gridded fields comprised of input and mean wave parameters such as the significant wave height, directions, frequencies etc. Once per month, a wave simulation is carried out using restart files from the previous month and forced by hindcast wind products for the entire month. The resulting output data are transferred to NODC on a monthly basis. NODC assembles the series of files into monthly accessions to facilitate archival retention and public access. The fields are encoded in the standard GRIdded Binary version 2 (GRIB2) file format. Wave spectral data summaries are included, as well as detailed spectra at selected locations, in tabular text format. Nine different sets of output fields, corresponding to nine different grids used in the numerical simulations, are included. These include a global grid, as well as regional and coastal grids covering much of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans.

NOAA CoastWatch distributes chlorophyll-a concentration data from NASA's Aqua Spacecraft. Measurements are gathered by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) carried aboard the spacecraft. The algorithm currently used in processing the water leaving radiance to chlorophyll concentration has not yet been accepted as science quality. In addition, assumptions are made in the atmospheric correction in order to provide the data in a timely manner.

Description

NOAA's Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS) Beach Watch Program, administered by the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association (FMSA), is a long-term monitoring program operating within GFNMS and NOAA's Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary along the California coast. An objective of the program is to develop baseline information on the organisms inhabiting the sanctuaries and on the physical characteristics of the sanctuaries. To achieve this objective, Beach Watch volunteers have taken photographic slides of animals (both alive and dead) and beach profiles during surveys of over fifty sanctuary beaches every two to four weeks since 1993. As part of a "data rescue" effort, GFNMS, FMSA, and NOAA's National Oceanographic Data Center and Climate Database Modernization Program have sponsored a project to scan Beach Watch's photographic slides and create high-resolution TIFF and Web-accessible JPEG images for the public. This collection is part of the project, which Jan Roletto of GFNMS coordinated for FMSA, and it contains images from surveys of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Frenchman's Reef (segment 3-34), California from 2006-10-23 to 2006-12-17.

Description

NODC Accession 0129462 contains raw underway meteorological, navigational, physical and time series data logged by the Scientific Computer System (SCS) aboard the NOAA Ship Hi'ialakai in the North Pacific Ocean from 2015-05-18 to 2015-06-08. Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) personnel aboard the ship submitted these data and associated metadata to NODC. In addition, NODC Accession 0129462 contains supplementary cruise-level metadata, which OMAO personnel logged in the Ship Daily Activity Log (SDAL). OMAO and NODC personnel developed the automated process to archive these data under the auspices of the NOAA Rolling Deck to Repository (NOAA R2R) program.

Description

This image represents a 0.5 meter resolution backscatter mosaic of the Mid Shelf Reef south of St. Thomas, US Virgin IslandsNOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in the US Virgin Islands from 2/1/05 to 2/12/05. Data was acquired with a pole-mounted Reson 8101 ER multibeam echosounder (240 kHz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS v5.4 software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM zone 20 north, datum WGS84. The backscatter component of the bathymetry data were processed by the Hawaii Mapping Research Group (HMRG), University of Hawaii using the HAWAII MR1 Sidescan Sonar Software Suite. The data were corrected for angle varying gain, transmit power and pulse width. Electronic and acoustic noise, such as striping due to across track variations in amplitude and speckling due to transducer motion, were removed. The project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.

Description

Radiated sound measurements of vessels are important for monitoring the noise characteristics of fishing and research vessels. A vessel's radiated noise can have behavioral effects on marine life which in turn can influence abundance and distribution estimates collected by these vessels. During this cruise, acoustic data were collected on the transit to and from Halifax, Nova Scotia.
