Description
Habitat maps of the main Hawaiian Islands were created by visual interpretation of aerial photos and hyperspectral imagery using the Habitat Digitizer extension. Aerial photographs are valuable tools for natural resource managers and researchers since they provide an excellent record of the location and extent of habitats. However, spatial distortions in aerial photographs due to such factors as camera angle, lens characteristics, and relief displacement must be accounted for during analysis to prevent incorrect measurements of area, distance, and other spatial parameters. These distortions of scale within an image can be removed through orthorectification. During orthorectification, digital scans of aerial photos are subjected to algorithms that eliminate each source of spatial distortion. The result is a georeferenced digital mosaic of several photographs with uniform scale throughout the mosaic. Features near land are generally georeferenced with greater accuracy while the accuracy of features away from land is generally not as good. Where no land is in the original photographic frame only kinematic GPS locations and image tie points were used to georeference the images. After an orthorectified mosaic is created, photointerpreters can accurately and reliably delineate boundaries of features in the imagery as they appear on the computer monitor using a software interface such as the Habitat Digitizer.

Fish survey, fishing duration, and other data were collected from net trawls in the Bering Sea from the MILLER FREEMAN and other platforms from 07 August 1975 to 21 October 1975. Data were collected by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Seattle, as part of Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC F123 Fish/Shellfish Surveys format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f123.html. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F123 format is used for data from field sampling of marine fish and shellfish. Temperature profile and other data were collected using CTD casts from the NOAA Ship RESEARCHER in the North Atlantic Ocean from 07 March 1981 to 24 July 1981. Data were collected by the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard High-Resolution STD/CTD Data (F022) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f022.html. The F022 format contains high-resolution data collected using CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) and STD (salinity-temperature-depth) instruments. As they are lowered and raised in the oceans, these electronic devices provide nearly continuous profiles of temperature, salinity, and other parameters. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering or obtained by interpolation and may be reported at depth intervals as fine as 1m. Cruise and instrument information, position, date, time and sampling interval are reported for each station. Environmental data at the time of the cast (meteorological and sea surface conditions) may also be reported. The data record comprises values of temperature, salinity or conductivity, density (computed sigma-t), and possibly dissolved oxygen or transmissivity at specified depth or pressure levels. Temperature and conductivity data were collected using moored current meter casts in the North Pacific Ocean from October 18, 1978 to August 1, 1980. Data were submitted by University Of Alaska - Fairbanks as part of the BORAX project. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Current Meter Data (F015) format. Full current meter moorings descriptions are available at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f015.html. The F015 format is used for time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth, and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record comprises values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north and negative directions west and south. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10-15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure, and conductivity or salinity may also be reported. This lidar point data set was collected during low tide conditions along an approximately 500-700 meter wide strip of the Southern California coastline within an area extending south from Long Beach to the US/Mexico border. Data were collected in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties from south of the Downtown Long Beach Marina in Long Beach, California to Leucadia on March 8, 2009 between 19:56 and 22:59 UTC. Data were collected in Orange and San Diego counties from south of Dana Point to north of La Jolla on March 9, 2009 between 21:27 and 23:48 UTC. Data were collected in San Diego County from south of Del Mar to south of the United States-Mexico border near Playas de Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico on March 10 between 21:32 and 22:32 UTC. Data set features include water, beach, cliffs, and top of cliffs. The all points data set contains the complete point cloud of first and last return elevation and laser intensity measurements recorded during the spring 2009 airborne lidar survey conducted semi-annually by the University of Texas at Austin for the Southern California Beach Processes Study. The data set was generated by the processing of laser range, scan angle, and aircraft attitude data collected using an Optech Inc. Airborne Laser Terrain Mapper (ALTM) 1225 system and geodetic quality Global Positioning System (GPS) airborne and ground-based receivers. Chemical, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and other data were collected using moored current meter casts and other instruments in the Gulf of Mexico from February 17, 1980 to May 27, 1982. Data were submitted by Texas A&M University as part of the Brine Disposal project. Data has been been processed by NODC to the NODC standard F004- Water Physics and Chemistry, F028- Phytoplankton, F069- Marine Chemistry, F123- Fish Shellfish Resource, and F124- Zooplankton formats. Full format and format code descriptions are available at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-datafmts.html. The F004 format is used for data from measurements and analyses of physical and chemical characteristics of the water column. Among chemical parameters that may be recorded are salinity, PH, and concentration of oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, chlorophyll, and suspended solids. Physical parameters that may be recorded include temperature, density (sigma-t), transmissivity, and current velocity (east-west and north-south components). Cruise and station information, including environmental conditions of the study site at the time of observations, is also included. The F028 format is used for data from the sampling and analysis of marine phytoplankton. Information on phytoplankton abundance, distribution, and productivity derived from these data support studies of marine populations and ecosystems. Data reported may include: position, date, and time of sampling; bottom depth and sampling depths; volume of water filtered; and concentration of cells, carbon concentration, wet and dry weight, and counts for each species reported. Comments may be relayed in a text record. The F069 format is used for data from chemical analyses of seawater samples. Cruise information, position, date, and time is reported for each station along with sample depth, temperature, salinity, and density (sigma-t). Chemical and biochemical parameters that may be reported include: dissolved oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, inorganic phosphate, and silicate; dissolved organic carbon, particulate organic carbon, and particulate organic nitrogen; and apparent oxygen utilization, percent oxygen saturation, adenosine triphosphate, total phaeophytin, total chlorophyll, total suspended matter, total recoverable petroleum hydrocarbons, and total resolved light hydrocarbons.
