Description

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Bathymetric and sidescan-sonar data, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provide a fundamental framework for research and management activities along this part of Block Island Sound, show the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provide information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. During June 2012, bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconnaissance survey of this area. Interpretations were derived from the multibeam-echosounder, sidescan-sonar, sedimentary, and photographic data collected in Block Island Sound. Description

The design of an aircraft is a highly iterative process. During the conceptual design phase there is no time for developing detailed simulation models and decisions are typically made either by using low fidelity models or existing data and regression models. However, the decisions made during the conceptual design phase greatly affect the performance of the aircraft and the associated cost, and typically the majority of the cost is locked during very early stages of the design process. Usually the sound insulation requirements of a passenger cabin are met after the outer mold line of the aircraft and the design of the fuselage structure have been completed and this approach adds weight to the design. Ideally the structural-acoustic concerns should enter the design cycle early and be considered along with other main design disciplines. During the early design stages of an aircraft the interior noise performance of different fuselage configurations must be evaluated based on the following information: length, cross sectional stations as a function of longitudinal location, main interior arrangements, spacing and size of stiffeners and stringers, thickness and material properties of insulation blankets, thickness and material properties of the fuselage and of the trim panels, and the type of acoustic treatment placed in the interior. The acoustic performance expressed in terms of noise reduction comprises the metric for assessing the aircraft performance for interior noise considerations. The proposed project will develop an easy to use, physics based, computational capability that can provide fast an assessment for the interior noise of either conventional or novel aircraft during the early stages of the design process. It will also allow engaging information from multi-scale simulations for designing quiet composite materials with increased damping and reduced radiation efficiency characteristics.

A problem perceived for Trex Enterprises chemical vapor composite silicon carbide CVC SiC<SUP>TM</SUP> mirrors is the cost associated with machining and lightweighting the mirrors. Indeed these processes are labor, schedule, risk and cost drivers for our exceptional, high performance variety of silicon carbide material. Although we have made significant strides in improving our baseline CVC SiC<SUP>TM</SUP> manufacturing processes, the product is still substantially higher priced than the goals of the NASA project. In Phase I, we created and demonstrated a manufacturing process for the new ceramic matrix composite honeycomb panel silicon carbide (HoneySiC or H-SiC) which nearly eliminates the machining and lightweighting process steps for mirrors and opto-mechanical structures. The new material achieves lightweighting of 92% relative to bulk material and net production cost on the order of $38K per square meter (unpolished), less than half of NASA's goal of $100K per square meter. Web thickness, core geometries (pocket depth, pocket size), and mirror shape are easily tailored since H-SiC starts as a molded precursor material. The Phase II project will start at Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL 3, experimental critical function and characteristic proof of concept) and end at TRL 5 (breadboard in a relevant environment).

The grayscale conterminous United States shaded relief data were derived from National Elevation Dataset (NED) data, and show the terrain of the conterminous United States at a resolution of 200 meters. The NED is a raster product assembled by the U.S. Geological Survey, designed to provide national elevation data in a seamless form with a consistent datum, elevation unit, and projection. Data corrections made in the NED assembly process minimize artifacts, permit edge matching, and fill sliver areas of missing data. The National Atlas also includes a Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area projection shaded relief file; this file is the same data in an Albers projection.

<p> The <em>Multi Element Telescope for Imaging and Spectroscopy, METIS</em>, investigation has been conceived to perform off-limb and near-Sun coronagraphy and is motivated by the aim of addressing the three key scientific questions identified as the focus of the HELEX program. These questions concern: the origin and heating/acceleration of the solar wind streams; the origin, acceleration and transport of the solar energetic particles; and the transient ejection of coronal mass and its evolution in the inner heliosphere (coronal mass ejections, CME’s).</p> <p> The investigation aims to provide crucial tests apt to verify the hypotheses and models on the following main issues of solar coronal physics that have been developed primarily during the SOHO era:</p> <p> • Is the slow solar wind originating according to more than one physical process and which is the level of contribution of the possible different sources of slow wind to the heliospheric wind observed ‘in situ’?</p> <p> • How does the magnetic field topology control the outflow velocity and composition of the slow and fast solar wind?</p> <p> • Is the magnetic field controlling the emergence of the fast wind at the base of coronal holes?</p> <p> • Do polar plumes and inter-plume regions have a role in channeling the fast wind?</p> <p> • Is ion cyclotron dissipation of fast Alfvén waves the primary energy deposition process in the fast wind? • Is the reconnection at the base of coronal holes responsible for the generation of waves and turbulence that energize the fast wind?</p> <p> • Which is the nature of coronal heating in open and closed field regions?</p> <p> • Which is the source of the seed particles of the Solar Energetic Particles (SEPs)?</p> <p> • Which is the role of coronal shocks driven by coronal mass ejections in energizing SEPs? • Which are the mass and magnetic fluxes carried out from the Sun during transient events?</p> <p> • How does the evolution of the coronal magnetic field, inferred from the large-scale evolution of the outer corona, trigger coronal mass ejections?</p> <p> • How does the corona re-adjust after coronal mass ejections on medium-term time scales, ranging between 3 and 10 days (not yet established in the outer corona)?</p> <p> • How do the quiescent streamers evolve on time scales ranging between 3 and 10 days? The crucial tests for addressing and solving these still open issues can be achieved by combining the instrument’s versatility with the uniqueness of the Solar Orbiter mission profile, which allows: a close approach to the Sun thus leading to a significant improvement in spatial resolution; quasi co-rotation with the Sun, which allows to nearly freeze for several days both the on-disk inner corona and the outer corona in the plane of the sky and, thus, disentangle the evolution of coronal structures and solar rotational effects on medium-term time scales, an outof- ecliptic view of the Sun. This Level 3 (gridded) data set¿s land surface parameters, surface soil moisture, land surface (skin) temperature, and vegetation water content, are derived from polarimetric microwave radiometer data from WindSat, onboard the Naval Research Laboratory's Coriolis satellite, using the Land Parameter Retrieval Model (LPRM). There are two files per day, one ascending (daytime) and one descending (nighttime), archived as two different products. This document is for the daytime product. The data set covers the period from October 2007 to July 2012, at a spatial resolution of 0.25 degree. The data are stored in netCDF format. The LPRM is based on a forward radiative transfer model to retrieve surface soil moisture and vegetation optical depth. The land surface temperature is derived separately from the WindSat's Ka-band (37.0 GHz). A unique feature of this method is that it can be applied at any microwave frequency, making it very suitable to exploit all the available passive microwave data from various satellites. Input data are from the WindSat brightness temperatures (sdrLowRes) product, daytime passes, as processed using LPRM (i.e., LPRM/WindSat/Coriolis L2 product, GES_DISC_LPRM_WINDSAT_SOILM2_V001).

Plasma techniques are proposed for the extraction of oxygen from the abundant carbon dioxide contained in the Martian atmosphere (96 % CO2). In this process, CO2 is directly decomposed in an energetic plasma forming O2 and CO, which are immediately separated. The Phase I project will clearly demonstrate the feasibility of achieving these goals by focusing on key aspects of the technology, such as efficient microwave plasma conversion at relevant pressures and processing rates as well as effective techniques for O2 separation from product gases. System mass and energy efficiency of this novel technology will be compared to those for SOA processes. The Phase II program will advance the technology through a more in depth development effort to the point where a fully functional prototype will be assembled and tested. Successful culmination of this effort will result in a self-contained, energy efficient technique that can be utilized by robotic precursor missions to Mars to stockpile oxygen in support of future manned missions to the planet.

The 2013 cartographic boundary shapefiles are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based shapefiles while others are available only as state-based files.
