Description

The utilization of an area as a feeding ground is dependent on a number of factors. The type and amount of food is an obvious limiting factor on both the number of species and number of each species, likely to be present. Various physical factors temperature, moisture, soil type, ect. will effect the type and amount of food available. In a marsh area water becomes an important factor. A change in the water level will change the nature of the marsh which will effect the utilization of the marsh. If the water level is lowered, it will restrict the feeding areas for those species which require wet or muddy areas for feeding. In observing a short grass marsh area, it was seen that a direct relationship exists between moisture and habitat utilization.

Description

This dataset represents one of a series of hydrographic sections conducted along Line W from the continental shelf south of New England toward Bermuda. A total of 17 full depth casts consisting of CTD (conductivity, temperature, pressure and oxygen), LADCP (lowered acoustic Doppler current profiler),and rosette water samples were collected between 05/10/2008 and 05/19/2008. Salinity and dissolved oxygen were analyzed from water samples on board the ship and used to calibrate the CTD sensors. Water samples were also analyzed for transient tracers (CFCs 11, 12, 113, SF-6).

Gridded bathymetry shelf, bank and slope environments of Agrihan and Pagan Islands, CNMI. Bottom coverage was achieved in depths between -4 and -3643 meters. The netCDF and Arc ASCII grids include multibeam bathymetry from the Simrad EM300 and Reson 8101 multibeam sonars collected as of June 2007 by the NOAA Coral Reef Ecosystem Division. The sonar frequencies are 30 and 240 kHz respectively.

Temperature profile data were collected using bathythermograph (BT/XBT) casts from HIEI MARU in the Pacific Ocean from May 18, 1977 to May 25, 1977. Data were submitted by Scripps Institution of Oceanography as part of the Thermal Structure Monitoring Program in the Pacific (TRANSPAC) project. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full BT descriptions are available at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data record was comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT Data File, in which temperature values were recorded at uniform 5 m intervals, the XBT data files contained temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points (''inflection points'') required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m.

Information on the recovery locations of all CWT salmonids throughout the Pacific region is available in an on-line coastwide database, the Regional Mark Information System (RMIS). This database (see http://www.psmfc.org/rmpc/index.html ) is maintained by the Regional Mark Processing Center (RMPC) of the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission (PSMFC) to facilitate exchange of CWT data between release agencies, sampling/recovery agencies, and other data users. NOAA Fisheries at Auke Bay Laboratories (ABL) is responsible for maintaining several different components of this coastwide CWT database including a complete list of recovery location records for CWT salmonids recovered in high seas commercial fisheries and research programs. Included are recovery location codes for CWT recoveries from the bycatch of Federally-managed high seas fisheries such as the Gulf of Alaska groundfish fishery, the Bering Sea-Aleutian Islands groundfish fishery, the Pacific hake trawl fishery off Washington-Oregon-California, the limited-entry rockfish trawl fishery off Washington-Oregon-California, the limited-entry non-hake groundfish trawl fishery off Washington-Oregon-California, and the limited-entry sablefish fixed gear fishery off Washington-Oregon-California. Additionally, CWT recovery records from both domestic and foreign high seas research programs are also maintained by ABL.

Hydrographic and Impairment Statistics (HIS) is a National Park Service (NPS) Water Resources Division (WRD) project established to track certain goals created in response to the Government Performance and Results Act of 1993 (GPRA). One water resources management goal established by the Department of the Interior under GRPA requires NPS to track the percent of its managed surface waters that are meeting Clean Water Act (CWA) water quality standards. This goal requires an accurate inventory that spatially quantifies the surface water hydrography that each bureau manages and a procedure to determine and track which waterbodies are or are not meeting water quality standards as outlined by Section 303(d) of the CWA. This project helps meet this DOI GRPA goal by inventorying and monitoring in a geographic information system for the NPS: (1) CWA 303(d) quality impaired waters and causes; and (2) hydrographic statistics based on the United States Geological Survey (USGS) National Hydrography Dataset (NHD). Hydrographic and 303(d) impairment statistics were evaluated based on a combination of 1:24,000 (NHD) and finer scale data (frequently provided by state GIS layers).

The primary risk classifications used are the 1-percent-annual-chance flood event, the 0.2-percent-annual- chance flood event, and areas of minimal flood risk. Description

Habitat maps were created as part of a larger ecological assessment conducted by NOAA's National Ocean Service (NOS), Biogeography Program, for Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve (National Park Service). Aerial photographs were obtained for 1971 and 1977 from the National Geodetic Survey, and were orthorectified by the Biogeography Program. A classification scheme was set up with 20 benthic habitat types, 19 land cover types, and 13 mangrove habitat types. For this map of seagrass and mangrove habitats during the 1970' s only the 3 seagrass, and 14 mangrove classification categories were used. These were mapped directly into a GIS system through visual interpretation of orthorectified aerial photographs.

On August 17, 1996, the Japanese Space Agency (NASDA - National Space Development Agency) launched the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS). ADEOS was in a descending, Sun synchronous orbit with a nominal equatorial crossing time of 10:30 a.m. Amoung the instruments carried aboard the ADEOS spacecraft was the Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS). OCTS is an optical radiometer with 12 bands covering the visible, near infrared and thermal infrared regions. (Eight of the bands are in the VIS/NIR. These are the only bands calibrated and processed by the OBPG) OCTS has a swath width of approximately 1400 km, and a nominal nadir resolution of 700 m. The instrument operated at three tilt states (20 degrees aft, nadir and 20 degrees fore), similar to SeaWiFS.

Description

We propose to develop a versatile and affordable system to measure the average diameter of primary soot particles along with their mass concentration in aircraft engine exhausts. This work will expand upon our recent experience applying laser-induced incandescence (LII) to obtain the first successful quantitative measurements of spatially and temporally resolved, non-intrusive soot particle mass concentration in an aircraft engine test. The proposed system will take advantage of recent research suggesting that particle size can be obtained from the LII decay rate. Advances in laser and photodiode technology should enable compact, inexpensive components to be used. A simple calibration procedure will help minimize the requirements for operator expertise and training. Advanced, experimentally validated algorithms will be used to compute soot particle size and mass, with the results displayed in real time during an engine test. The tasks described in this proposal are essential steps leading to a versatile LII system that can be routinely applied to engine testing programs, and subsequently commercialized. Our goal is to develop an LII system suitable for widespread use; therefore, it will be portable, inexpensive, and easy to operate. The proposed Phase I effort will demonstrate the feasibility of this system.
