YFNWR project report number 85-3: Beaver food cache survey, Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska: Management study
Published By US Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior
Issued almost 10 years ago
Summary
Description
The objective of the annual beaver food cache survey is to determine trends in the relative abundance of beaver in representative drainages within the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge. Eventually, estimates of beaver populations will be used to evaluate annual beaver harvest in terms of: how closely harvest approaches optimum sustained yield; whether or not optimum aged beaver are harvested; and whether or not particular areas may be overharvested and beaver populations need to be protected or restored. The methods and materials and results and discussion are included.

This report summarizes walrus harvest data that was collected in the spring of 1984 from 26 April to 20 June in Savoonga, Alaska. One hundred and fortyfour pairs of lower canine teeth were collected from individual walruses. Four complete sets of tissue samples, including heart, liver, kidney and fat were also collected along with teeth from these animals. Age composition data will be compiled through analysis of the teeth samples and tissue samples will be analyzed for environmental contaminants. The magnitude and sex ratio of the harvest differed from previous years, with a greater number of animals and a higher proportion of calves being harvested.

The clubbing of fur seals in Alaska and the killing of baby harp seals in Canada currently are generating numerous requests for information. This compilation of material is an attempt to answer the questions most frequently asked. The coverage deals primarily with the harvest or killing of seals. It presents arguments on both sides of the issue and attempt to clear up the confusion and misunderstanding that surrounds the subject. The following seven items fact sheets, letters, releases, and publications were prepared by the National Marine Fisheries Service in NOAA.

The background material, objectives and methods are described in other reports and these will not be repeated here. The contents, data analysis, and format follows the example of Wege and Garrett to allow comparison among the various field camps. Information on the study area, methods used, and results are discussed. Data forms are attached.

The purpose of this report is to provide information on the presence, species composition, and abundance of marine benthic infauna in Cube Cove on northwest Admiralty Island. The species composition, abundance and diversity of marine benthic infauna in Cube Cove on northwest Admiralty Island were determined by collecting and analyzing fifteen randomly selected.25 meters squared bottom samples. The study results indicate that the density and abundance of marine infauna in Cube Cove are comparable to, if not greater than, other undisturbed nearshore areas in Alaska.

Few studies have focused specifically on use of Alaskan wetlands by waterfowl and only two of these have been published. However, substantial information on the value of wetlands is available from studies of individual species and from unpublished reports of studies with a variety of objectives. This report attempts to summarize the classifications of wetlands habitats of major importance to waterfowl and other waterbirds by region. Subject area maps and data forms are attached.
Waterfowl populations and production within the impoundment area of the proposed dam at Rampart on the Yukon River, Alaska: Progress report
Published By US Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior
Issued almost 10 years ago
Summary
Description
Investigations to determine the feasibility of a multipurpose dam in Rampart Canyon of the Yukon River were authorized by Congress in 1959. Construction of the proposed damn will result in the inundation of the major waterfowl breeding area in interior Alaska. The primary objective of this part of the feasibility study is to evaluate the ultimate effect upon the waterfowl population if the dam is constructed. A preliminary report of April 1962 provided detailed information on studies conducted in 1961 and previously. The present report summarizes the results obtained during the 1962 season. Information on the procedures is discussed, as well are details on the breeding population and broods. Population estimates, distribution of harvest, geese, and other birds are also discussed. The expected effects from the rampart dam are covered. Data forms are attached.

The goals of the study are to determine basic breeding parameters of the bald eagles on the island, determine the nesting sites and movement of bald eagles wintering on the Adak Naval Station, initiate the collection of eagle longevity data, and investigate possible correlations between observable physical characteristics and sexage differences.
Bird and mammal observations at Alaid and Nizki Islands, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, spring and summer 1976
Published By US Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior
Issued almost 10 years ago
Summary
Description
This report provides detailed annotated accounts of 80 species of birds including 24 confirmed or probable breeders and 56 migrants or visitants and 5 species of mammals observed at Alaid and Nizki islands between May and July of 1976. The status of breeding bird populations is documented to help assess the response of various species to the absence of arctic foxes. The redfaced cormorant was the most abundant of the breeding seabirds with an estimated population of 3,000 birds, while the lapland longspur was the most abundant of the breeding terrestrial birds with an estimated population of 1,100 birds. Dates of occurrence and numbers are summarized for all migrants and visitants.

The methods of propagation on Amchitka Island were changed from past years in that artificial incubation and rearing were abandoned in favor of more natural goose rearing methods. In addition, an attempt was made to pair seven wildcaught males with seven best producing females of the captive flock to produce golden broods, that is, broods whose ganders have already successfully completed at least one migration to the wintering grounds. Additional goslings were transplanted to develop super broods in such a manner that 70 of the young released were female.

The following recommendations concern the designation of critical habitat on Federal lands in Alaska for the Endangered Species, Aleutian Canada goose Branta canadensis leucopareia. The Aleutian Canada goose once bred from the eastern Aleutian Islands to the Kuril Islands, and was abundant in the western Aleutians. Today the only known breeding population occurs on tiny Buldir Island in the western Aleutians. The present range and abundance, suspected reasons for decline, and recovery objectives are presented in this paper.

Stream surveys of the major salmon runs on Adak were conducted on a regular basis beginning in 1977. Their completion was dependent on time constraints and availability of personnel. Adaks salmon populations have not warranted more intensive studies because of the relatively low fishing pressure Love 1976. However, the counts have yielded population trend data which can be used in the future when evaluating management programs. Counts of pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha were emphasized, although other species were noted as well.
