Description

Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge CRNWR administers approximately 3,414 acres alongthe Cahaba River in Bibb County, Alabama. The Refuge was established in 2002 forthe purpose of protecting and managing a unique section of the Cahaba River and adjacentforested uplands. The river itself stretches for nearly 200 miles through some of Alabamas mostspectacular scenery and is considered to be the states longest freeflowing stream. The Refugeand surrounding area are known to contain one of the greatest concentrations of imperiledspecies to be found in North America, 13 of which occur nowhere else in the world. Of these, the shoals spiderlily known locally as the Cahaba lily has come to symbolize the beauty andsignificance of the region. The Refuge contains a fragmented assemblage of managed andnaturally occurring uplands, interspersed with a mosaic of bottomland forests, streams, andbluffs. Prior to the inception of this project, a detailed inventory of natural communities and rareplants did not exist. This report was designed to highlight the extent, location, and condition ofCRNWRs natural plant associations and rare plant species to furnish land managers with thenecessary information to establish and implement appropriate conservation strategies.

Description

The Watercress Darter Etheostoma nuchale is one of the most imperiled fishes in the southeastern U.S. and is listed as endangered on the U.S. endangered species list. The species is restricted to five springs and spring runs within the Greater Birmingham Metropolitan Area in Jefferson County, AL. Maintaining these five populations is a primary goal as delineated in the recovery plan for the species, and monitoring of these populations is essential to achieving that goal. Also essential is improving our understanding of the ecology of the species so that its needs can be more carefully met.

Description

This is a summary of 2004 freshwater mussel inventory on Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge. The Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge was established for the purpose of protecting and managing a unique section of the Cahaba River and the lands adjacent to it. Within the Refuge a series of bedrock shoals are extremely productive, supporting a variety of fish, mussels, snails, as well as a dense stand of the Cahaba lily. A recent survey of select sites on the Refuge, and reports by others, indicate that at least 17 species of native mussels continue to survive on the Refuge.
