Description

Bathythermograph data were collected from the BERING STRAIT within a 1-mile radius of Ocean Weather Station V (3400N 16400E) and in transit. Data were collected by the United States Coast Guard from 16 February 1970 to 18 March 1970. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

The EUMETSAT OSI-SAF NAR SST products are SST fields derived from NOAA/AVHRR data and available over 6 pre-defined zones, 4 times per day. After acquisition and calibration at CMS, the NOAA/AVHRR data are re-mapped onto a stereopolar grid to produce mosaics of consecutive orbits over Europe and the Near Atlantic at a 2 km resolution. Mosaics are made over a "Rectification Grand Domaine" area (RGD). For re-mapped grid points observed by more than one overpass, the smallest satellite zenith angle data are selected. In the normal conditions when two satellites are operational, four mosaics per day are produced for all the AVHRR channels. SSTs are then calculated from these data. Six zones are then extracted . They are 1024 * 1024 pixels in size to offer the users (presumably interested by local phenomena) the possibility of handling a restricted volume of data. Note that SSTs are calculated over the entire RGD, but only the predefined zones are delivered as NAR products.The operational CMS AVHRR cloud mask in use is based on a multi-spectral thresholding algorithm (Derrien and Le Gleau 1999). Some refinements specific to the marine conditions have been introduced including Use of fine scale climatology and a fine gradiant climatology to assist in the detection of clouds in areas characterised by strong thermal gradients. SSTs are derived from the 11 and 12 micron brightness temperatures (T11 and T12) . The NOAA /AVHRR has three IR channels : channel 3 (3.6-3.8 micron), channel 4 (10.2-11.2 micron) and channel 5 (11.5-12.5 micron) which provide IR data at 1-km spatial resolution at the satellite subpoint (Kidwell, 1997). NOAA-14 and NOAA-16 have similar characteristics, but with distinct radiometer filter functions that necessitate distinct algorithm coefficients. The algorithms coefficients are derived from multilinear regression on a simulation database . At night the use of the 3.7 channel in a triple window algorithm improves the SST retrieval performances under high water vapor content conditions. The expected accuracy is defined as the expected bias and standard deviation of the primary calculations against drifting buoy measurements determined on a monthly or yearly basis. The following performance evaluation was derived from a detailed validation of NOAA/AVHRR derived SSTs (Brisson et al 2001). Bias: Apart for the first 2 months after the launch of a new satellite, the monthly biases should remain within +/-0.4 K by night. By day local biases of several K are possible because of shallow diurnal heating. Standard deviation: see table below: low-cloud cases (cloud coverage less than 10% of the validation box) have been separated from all cases (cloud coverage less than 60%). The "expected maximum standard deviation" or the expected maximum biases are the maximum values that can be observed under normal conditions. When these values are overpassed, some anomaly may have occurred and the problem must be identified. MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. Terra's orbit around the Earth is timed so that it passes from north to south across the equator in the morning, while Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon. Terra MODIS and Aqua MODIS are viewing the entire Earth's surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands, or groups of wavelengths (see MODIS Technical Specifications). These data will improve our understanding of global dynamics and processes occurring on the land, in the oceans, and in the lower atmosphere. MODIS is playing a vital role in the development of validated, global, interactive Earth system models able to predict global change accurately enough to assist policy makers in making sound decisions concerning the protection of our environment.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is producing detailed geologic maps of the coastal sea floor. Bathymetry and sidescan-sonar imagery, originally collected by NOAA for charting purposes, provides a fundamental framework for research and management activities in Long Island Sound, shows the composition and terrain of the seabed, and provides information on sediment transport and benthic habitat. During October 2008 NOAA completed hydrographic survey H11997 offshore in eastern Long Island Sound, and during May 2010 bottom photographs and surficial sediment data were acquired as part of a ground-truth reconnaissance survey of this area. Two interpretive data layers were derived from the multibeam echo-sounder and the ground-truth data used to verify them. Description

To support a long-term NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) for sustainable management and conservation of coral reef ecosystems, from 12 September - 12 October 2008, marine invertebrate quantitative assessments were conducted, as part of Rapid Ecological Assessments (REA), during the Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (RAMP) Cruise HI0809 in the NW Hawaiian Islands. Such cruises are conducted at biennial intervals by the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED) at the NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC). At specific reef sites, marine invertebrate zoologists along with coral and algal biologists entered the water and conducted a fine-scale (~100 m2) and high degree of taxonomic resolution benthic REA survey for coral, algae, and key invertebrate species. Invertebrate surveys were focused on quantifying key non-coral invertebrate species common to the reef habitats, and were conducted using a combination of different survey techniques to quantify the diverse communities. These methods included belt-transect surveys, roving-swim surveys, and quadrat surveys. In belt-transect surveys, quantitative counts of key invertebrates were recorded along two consecutively-placed 25m long and 2m wide belt transects (total area = 100 m2). For any species that cannot be identified in the field, a photograph and a representative specimen, if possible, is collected for later identification. Roving-swim surveys were conducted in the general area with the goal to collect qualitative data for rare, larger, and cryptic organisms, such as Crown of Thorns Starfish and Triton's Trumpet snails which may not be seen during belt-transect surveys, and to survey any additional habitats present at the site, e.g. sand, sea grass, pavement, etc. This was accomplished by swimming a zig-zag pattern that extends roughly 5 m on either side of the two transect lines (total length = 500 m). Quadrat surveys were used to quantify the smaller, more cryptic invertebrates which were sometimes overlooked or too numerous to count during belt-transect surveys. Ten 0.25-m2 quadrats were laid out at 2-m intervals along two of the 25-m transects (total area = 5 m2). For each quadrat the percent cover of sponges, octocorals and zoanthids was recorded, as well as urchins, hermit crabs of the genus Calcinus, trapezid crabs, and coralliophilid snails. In addition, up to 25 cm diameters of all urchin species are measured. Based on data from previous REA surveys, a group of target invertebrate species was chosen for quantitative counts at 6 REA sites at Lisianski Island in the NW Hawaiian Islands. The species in the list were chosen because they have been shown to be common components of the reef habitats and they are species that are generally visible (i.e.; non-cryptic) and easily enumerated during the course of a single 50-60 minute SCUBA survey.

Temperature profiles were collected from XBT casts from the KNORR and other platforms from 18 September 1978 to 13 October 1982. Data were collected by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) as part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration / International Ocean Studies / First Dynamic Response and Kinematics Experiment in the Drake Passage (IDOE/ISOS/FDRAKE). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC- Archive/bt.html. The UBT format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data records are comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. The XBT data files contain temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points (''inflection points'') required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of either 450 or 760 m. Special instruments permit measurements to be obtained to 1830 m.
