Description

Scientists will collect high resolution multibeam and acoustic fisheries data in mid-water depths approximately 30 to 1000 meters so as to continue to characterize seafloor habitats within all U.S. States, Territories, and Commonwealths. The objective of this project is to collect a multibeam bathymetry dataset with 100% seafloor ensonification, along with multibeam backscatter suitable for seafloor characterization. Fishery acoustics data will be collected to characterize broad-scale fish abundance, biomass, and utilization patterns, as well as to locate and document fish spawning aggregations. Multibeam data will be collected to conform to IHO Order 1 (100m) accuracy standards. The strategies developed for each survey area will take into account the minimum depths, general bathymetry, and time allotment. The delineation and identification of seafloor habitats will be assisted by the use of a moderate-depth Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and drop camera. The vehicle has video and frame camera capability to depths of 300 meters and will be used for point sampling within areas mapped during this mission.

Physical oceanographic data were collected by Navigation Response Team 4 in the Great Lakes area from 19 June 2008 to 15 October 2008. Data were collected from CTD casts and underway vessel profiler. Temperature and salinity profiles were collected from CTD casts. Sound velocity profiles were collected from the underway vessel profiler. Data are self documenting and are in plain ASCII text.

This dataset from the Channel Islands National Park's Kelp Forest Monitoring Program has measurements of the abundance of selected rare, clumped, sedentary indicator species. The summary data presented here represents the mean density per square meter. Sampling is conducted annually between the months of May-October, so the Time data in this file is July 1 of each year (a nominal value). The original measurements were taken at various depths, so the Depth data in this file is the depth of the station's temperature logger, which is a typical depth.

Description

Oceanographic station data were collected from the OWASCO within a 1-mile radius of Ocean Weather Station C (5245N 03530W) and in transit. Data were collected by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) from 29 May 1970 to 15 June 1970. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Station Data II Output Format (SD2). Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/sd2.html. The SD2 format contains physical-chemical oceanographic data recorded at discrete depth levels. Most of the observations were made using multi-bottle Nansen casts or other types of water samplers. A small amount (about 5 percent) were obtained using electronic CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) or STD (salinity-temperature-depth) recorders. The CTD/STD data were reported to NODC at depth levels equivalent to Nansen cast data, however, and have been processed and stored the same as the Nansen data. Cruise information (e.g., ship, country, institution), position, date, and time, and reported for each station. The principal measured parameters and temperature and salinity , but dissolved oxygen, phosphate, total phosphorus, silicate, nitrate, nitrite, and pH may be reported. Meteorological conditions at the time of the cast (e.g., air temperature and pressure, wind, waves) may also be reported, as well as auxiliary data such as water color (Forel-Ule scale), water transparency (Secchi disk depth), and depth to bottom. Values of density (sigma-t) sound velocity, and dynamic depth anomaly are computed from measured parameters. Each station contains the measurements taken at the observed depth levels, but also includes data values interpolated to a set of standard depth levels.

Description

The sound velocity and other data in this accession has been processed by NODC from a tape submitted by the originator containing Inverted Echo Sounder data from the R/V Endeavor cruise 205, October 1989. It also contains data previously sent to NODC for the Seasonal Equatorial Atlantic (SEQUAL) project for sites Sal and Sol. These data are in NODC format for pressure gauge data (F017) and the format described in the documentation. The file Sal represents observations from several deployments (overlap of instruments) therefore there are duplicates in the data. These data have been released by Dr. Eli Katz from Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory. CTD data was also sent and can be found under track numbers TV5152-TV5154. Data has been re-processed and re-submitted on March 24, 1991. A01402 W18760

MBT data were collected from the USS PERSISTENT in support of the Fleet Observations of Oceanographic Data (FLOOD) project. Data were collected by US Navy; Ships of Opportunity from 23 March 1964 to 27 March 1964. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

Description

A Group for High Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (GHRSST) Level 4 sea surface temperature analysis produced daily on an operational basis at the JPL Physical Oceanography DAAC using weighted averages on a regional 0.011 degree grid over the oceans off North and Central America (62N- 20S, 165W - 30W). This Research to Operations (RTO) analysis is based upon a composite of either nighttime or daytime GHRSST L2P skin SST from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the NASA Aqua and Terra platforms, and subskin SST observations from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-EOS (AMSRE). Four unique products (composites) are created: MODIS Terra/AMSRE day and night, and MODIS Aqua/AMSRE day and night. This particular dataset represents a MODIS Terra and AMSRE composite using daytime data. The algorithm is based on a weighting scheme and compositing wherby MODIS data are used if they exist to preserve the highest resolution possible. The product is categorized as blended because no attempt is made to correct for foundation or skin temperature.

Description

Fish larvae counts and standardized counts for larvae captured in CalCOFI icthyoplankton nets (primarily vertical [Calvet or Pairovet], oblique [bongo or ring nets], and surface tows [Manta nets]). Surface tows are normally standardized to count per 1,000 m3 strained. Oblique tows are normally standardized to count per 10 m2 of surface sampled. This table includes all tows by species, even if zero larvae were captured for the species, i.e., negative tows. The "Larvae Counts Positive Tows" table includes only tows where one or more larvae were captured for the species selected by the user.
