Terrapoint, on behalf of multiple agencies, collected topographic lidar of the Lower Columbia River area. Field data collection took place between the dates of January 10th and February 20th, 2005. The control network and checkpoint surveys were performed from January 4th to February 12th, 2005. The project area covers approximately 890 square miles along the Columbia River, from the Bonneville Dam to the Pacific Ocean. A total of 431 flightlines were required to cover the project area flightlines. Terrapoint used a 40 kHz Airborne Laser Terrain Mapping System ALTMS sensor attached to a Navajo Twin-engin aircraft (C-FVZM). The mission was flown at 3500 feet above ground level at an average speed of 140 knots. The system consists of a 36 degree full scan angle laser, a Trimble 4700 GPS receiver and a Honeywell H764 IMU unit. The nominal flightline spacing was 1070 feet with 30 to 50% sidelap. The surveyed and processed data was received divided by funding agency. The agency responsible for funding each tile is represented as a number (0:COE, 1:DNR, 2:DOGAMI, 3:DOI) in the "User Data" field of each LAS file.

XBT data were collected from the NOAA Ship RAINIER in support of the Integrated Global Ocean Services System (IGOSS) project. Data were collected by the National Ocean Service (NOS) from 21 August 1980 to 28 August 1980. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles at depths of about 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Cruise information, position, date, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT data file, in which temperature values are recorded at uniform 5m intervals, the XBT Data File contains temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths are at a minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to record the temperature curve to an acceptable degree of accuracy. On output, however, the user may request temperature values either at inflection points or interpolated to uniform depth increments.

Description

Submarine canyons are dominant features of the outer continental shelf and slope of the US East coast from Cape Hatteras to the Gulf of Maine. They are important conduits of anthropogenic pollutants, organic carbon, and sediments from shallow to deeper waters and support ecologically important ecosystems, such as cold seeps and hard bottom and coral habitats. The geology of these features has been well studied; however, despite their high productivity, biological data are limited (particularly deeper than 200 m). Much of the biological data available for these canyons is represented by unpublished reports, unanalyzed data sets, and anecdotal observations. The canyons between Cape Hatteras and Cape Cod are the subject of potential oil exploration, intensive fisheries, and are possible National Marine Sanctuary candidates, and yet these are even less well known than those further north.
