Description

A revised version of the study designed to determine the effects of organochlorine pollutants on backcrowned night herons nesting in the Pacific Northwest and to determine the populations wintering localities. No new insight has been gained about the source of the DDT other than it is doubtful it is local. Twelve radio transmitters will be placed on adult blackcrowned night herons at Ruby Lake in 1981. These birds will be searched for in the winter and prey samples will be taken for DDT analysis where they are located.

Description

As a measure for the protection of their young, some bid species establish territories which surround their nests. A territorial behavior is practiced within the territory in response to a stranger with in his territory. A determinate factor of this behavior is the condition of the young. In the Western Kingbird territorial behavior changes as the young develop. A study was conducted on a pair of Kingbirds and their young to illustrate their changed behavior. The study will examine what is the territorial area of the Kingbird and: 1 territorial responses and displays of the parent Kingbirds while the young were in the nestling and fledgling condition, 2 the lack of territorial responses and display by the fledglings when the parent birds were absent.

A study aiming to identify feeding methods of the American Avocet, characterize such method and determine the type preference and success. Relatively little is known about the behavior of the American Avocet. Based on noncritical observation, one often gets a stereotyped view of various behavior patterns in animals and the feeding habits of the American Avocet fall into this category. This project aims to find out specifically in what ways Avocets feed, characterize such method and determine the type preference and success.
