CRED shallow Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) casts are vertical profiles (max 30 meter depth, downcast only) of temperature, conductivity and pressure. Data are collected at select nearshore locations, both around islands or banks and within lagoons. Data processing was performed using Seabird Instrument's SeaSoft SBE Data Processing Software (http://www.seabird.com/software/SBEDataProcforWindows.htm). Data format is discreet, tabular (formatted, space delimited ASCII) files for each profile, with a full header as provided by SeaSoft. Raw file extension is HEX, processed file extension is CNV. The header contains latitude, longitude and other location information, as well as all data processing steps and settings. All dates and times are UTC. All positions are WGS84 decimal degrees. These data represent data collected from the Shipboard Environmental (data) Acquisition System (SEAS), a program developed by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to provide accurate meteorological and oceanographic data in real time from ships at sea through the use of satellite data transmission techniques. The system transmits data through either the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) or the International Maritime Satellite Organization (INMARSAT C) satellites to NOAA for use in weather, climatological and ocean models. NOAA is actively participating in an international effort to increase the number of subsurface temperature observations in support of global oceanographic and climate studies. NOAA's Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT) program, SEAS, currently supports about 80 Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS). SEAS XBT data are archived by the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) on a weekly basis.

Rougheye rockfish (Sebastes aleutianus) and shortraker rockfish (Sebastes borealis) were collected from the Washington coast, the Gulf of Alaska, the southern Bering Sea, and the eastern Kamchatka coast of Russia (areas encompassing most of their geographic distribution) for population genetic analyses. Using starch gel electrophoresis, we analyzed 1027 rougheye rockfish and 615 shortraker rockfish for variation at 29 protein coding loci. No genetic heterogeneity was found among shortraker rockfish throughout the sampled regions, although shortraker in the Aleutian Islands region, captured at deeper depths, were found to be significantly smaller in size than the shortraker caught in shallower waters from Southeast Alaska. Genetic analysis of the rougheye rockfish revealed two evolutionary lineages that exist in sympatry with little or no gene flow between them. When analyzed as two distinct species, neither lineage exhibited heterogeneity among regions. Sebastes aleutianus seems to inhabit waters throughout the Gulf of Alaska and more southern waters, whereas S. sp. cf. aleutianus inhabits waters throughout the Gulf of Alaska, Aleutian Islands, and Asia. The distribution of the two rougheye rockfish lineages may be related to depth where they are sympatric. The paler color morph, S. aleutianus, is found more abundantly in shallower waters and the darker color morph, Sebastes sp. cf. aleutianus, inhabits deeper waters. Sebastes sp. cf. aleutianus, also exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of two parasites, N. robusta and T. trituba, than did Sebastes aleutianus, in the 2001 samples, indicating a possible difference in habitat and (or) resource use between the two lineages.

The primary purpose of this project was to develop a consistent and accurate surface elevation dataset derived from high-accuracy Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology for the USGS San Francisco Coastal LiDAR project area. The LiDAR data were processed to a bare-earth digital terrain model (DTM). Detailed breaklines and bare-earth DEMs were produced for the project area. Data was formatted according to tiles with each tile covering an area of 1500 m by 1500 m. A total of 712 tiles were produced for the project encompassing an area of approximately 610 sq. miles. This metadata relates to LAS that were classified in the following classes: Class 1 = Unclassified. This class includes vegetation, buildings, noise etc. Class 2 = Ground Class 7= Noise Class 9 = Water Class 10= Ignored Ground (due to proximity to breakline)

The incidence of four discrete characters of individual sockeye salmon -two genetically inherited proteins (PGM-1*and PGM-2*) , freshwater age at migration, and the presence of the brain-tissue parasite Myxobolus arcticus-in weekly samples from two Alaskan fisheries (Noyes Island in 1986 and Sumner Strait in 1987) were used to infer stock composition of the catches based on corresponding character samples from 73 Alaskan and Canadian stocks. Estimated contributions of 13 stock groups, formed on the basis of character similarity of their members, were roughly consistent with expectations from tagging experiments, knowledge of stock magnitudes, and similar assessments from scales. Imprecision of the estimated contributions by the 13 stock groups limited their practical value; but variability was much reduced for combined estimated contributions by two inclusive categories, namely stock groups whose members had either high or low brainparasite prevalence. Noyes Island catches consisted predominantly of unparasitized fish, most of which were probably of Canadian origin. The majority of Sumner Strait catches consisted of parasitized fish, whose freshwater origins may have been in Alaska or Canada.

The purpose of this study was to genetically analyze axillary process samples from ~6,000 sockeye salmon harvested in the 2006 and 2007 Districts 101 gillnet and 104 purse seine sockeye fisheries to determine proportions of Canadian and U.S. fish. A SNP genetic baseline of 45 SNPs (41 markers as 3 groups of SNPs are linked) assayed in 84 sockeye populations from southeast Alaska and British Columbia was developed by the ADF&G. The 84 populations were grouped into 14 regions. With the exception of locus One_Serpin, which failed during genotyping, the same markers were evaluated in the baseline and mixtures. Stock proportions were estimated using a Bayesian mixture analysis. In addition to performing mixture analysis for the 2006 and 2007 fisheries, the sockeye baseline was also expanded as part of the 2007 project. Approximately 1700 fish from 21 locations were genotyped, which will be included in a future updated baseline.

Data from Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED), NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) Subsurface Temperature Recorders (STR) provide a time series of water temperature at coral reef sites. Data is typically collected at 1800 second intervals for a duration of 2 years using a SBE39 Temperature Recorder (Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., www.seabird.com). When a STR is recovered, a new one is typically deployed in the same place. Time series data combining multiple deployments from a given site may also be available. A database describing a 67-year time series for Sashin Creek pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) data is presented. The database details the survival and other biological parameters of the pink salmon population living in Sashin Creek, a pristine environment in Little Port Walter, Baranof Island, Alaska. We assembled all the published and unpublished biological and environmental data pertaining to this population, which has been evaluated almost continually by researchers since 1934. We developed a database using Microsoft Access that includes annual estimates of the freshwater and saltwater survival for these fish. The database contains the daily counts of the number of emigrating fry and escaping adults during their annual migrations since 1934, and their lengths, weights, or fecundity. Environmental parameters in the database include stream temperature, stream discharge, daily minimum and maximum air temperatures, and precipitation where Sashin Creek enters seawater at Little Port Walter. All records have been evaluated and transformed to ensure comparability. References for all data are provided, including unpublished sources. The Sashin Creek Weir Database (SCWDATA) can be accessed through the Internet.

The purpose of this project is to investigate the toxic effects of four wildland firefighting foams on Myxobolus cerebralis, the causative agent of Whirling Disease. M. cerebralis is considered an important Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in North America. It is responsible for significant declines in wild and hatchery stocks of trout and salmon. Efforts are being made to prevent the spread of Whirling Disease throughout the western U.S. The goal of the proposed experiment is to determine if firefighting foams and/or retardant are effective in inactivating M. cerebralis. Toxicity of several currently approved Class A wildland firefighting foams on various aquatic invasive species.
