Drifting buoy data was collected by the University of Washington - Seattle (UW) as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP). Data were collected from 02 November 1975 to 03 June 1976. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F156 Drifting Buoy Data format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f156.html. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user service. The F156 format is used for time series data on ocean circulation determined by the tracking of drifting buoys, drogues, or other instrumented devices as they are carried with the flow. Movement is reported as point-to-point geographic locations determined by shore-based, surface ship, aircraft, or satellite observations. Data from both ocean currents and ice movement can be reported in this format over time periods ranging from minutes to months. Directions and speeds between individual observations may be computed from these data and presented in graphic or summary listing form to provide information on circulation patterns and mass transport in offshore and near- shore regions. Platform name (for platform acquiring data or deploying device), drogue characteristics, start and end positions and times, and observation frequency (if constant time interval) are reported for each series of observation. Other surface meteorological or oceanographic parameters (e.g., water temperature and salinity, air temperature and pressure, wind, waves) and subsurface data (depth, pressure, temperature) may also be reported. Text records may be used to report general comments or to describe individual drogue observations.

This dataset has quarterly Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data from the TAO/TRITON (Pacific Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/), RAMA (Indian Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/rama/), and PIRATA (Atlantic Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/pirata/) arrays of moored buoys which transmit oceanographic and meteorological data to shore in real-time via the Argos satellite system. These buoys are major components of the CLIVAR climate analysis project and the GOOS, GCOS, and GEOSS observing systems. Quarterly data is an average of monthly values collected during a 3 month period. A minimum of 2 monthly values are required to compute a quarterly average. NODC accession 0089505 includes physical and underway data collected aboard the KILO MOANA during cruise KM0902 in the North Pacific Ocean from 2009-01-19 to 2009-01-23. These data include CURRENT SPEED - EAST/WEST COMPONENT (U) and CURRENT SPEED - NORTH/SOUTH COMPONENT (V). The instruments used to collect these data include ADCP and GPS. These data were collected by Fernando Santiago-Mandujano of The University of Hawai'i System and UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII; MARINE LABORATORY as part of Hawaii Ocean Timeseries (HOT-208). The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) submitted these data to NODC as part of the NSF sponsored Rolling Deck to Repository (R2R) program. The ADCP data represent the raw and automated processed data set. Post processed quality assessed data are not available in this accession.

Popis

Bathymetry for Saco Bay was derived from five surveys consisting of 13,108soundings. No surveys were omitted. The average separation betweensoundings was 61 meters. One survey in the north dated from 1923. The otherfour surveys dated from 1946 to 1955. The total range of sounding data was 3.0meters to -32.3 meters at mean low water. A mean high water value of 2.7meters was assigned to the shoreline. Nine points were found that were notconsistent with the surrounding data. These were removed prior to tinning. DEM grid values outside the shoreline (on land) were assigned null values (-32676).Saco Bay has four 7.5 minute DEMs and a single one degree DEM. The 1degree DEMs were generated from the higher resolution 7.5 minute DEMswhich covered the estuary. A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) contains aseries of elevations ordered from south to north with the order ofthe columns from west to east. The DEM is formatted as one ASCIIheader record (A- record), followed by a series of profile records(B- records) each of which include a short B-record header followedby a series of ASCII integer elevations (typically in units of 1centimeter) per each profile. The last physical record of the DEM isan accuracy record (C-record).The 7.5-minute DEM (30- by 30-m data spacing) is cast on theUniversal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. It provides coveragein 7.5- by 7.5-minute blocks. Each product provides the samecoverage as a standard USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle but the DEMcontains over edge data. Coverage is available for many estuaries ofthe contiguous United States but is not complete.

Monitoring project designed to evaluate effectiveness of Natural Drainage Systems built by Seattle Public Utilities in the Piper Creek watershed. We collected data on three groups of stream organisms: fish, benthic invertebrates, and periphyton (the layer of biofilm covering the stream benthos). Benthic invertebrate and periphyton data were collected annually in the early fall (September). Fish surveys were conducted in the spring and fall for 2006-2007, and thereafter in September only. Fish movement was monitored continuously with a combination of mobile and fixed-array Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT)-tag antennas beginning in the summer of 2007. The data are collected to provide information on nutrient levels and nutrient flow in offshore areas. Current and other data were collected from meters attached to fixed platforms in the Gulf of Alaska and other locations by the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) . Data were collected as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP) from 17 August 1974 to 01 September 1975. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F015 Current Meter Components format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f015.html. The F015 format contains time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent the Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record includes values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10 - 15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure and conductivity or salinity may also be reported. Zooplankton and other data were collected from net casts from the NOAA Ship MILLER FREEMAN from 12 November 1975 to 26 November 1975. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F124 format is used for data from sampling and analysis of marine zooplankton. Information on zooplankton abundance, distribution, and productivity derived from these data support studies of marine populations and ecosystems. Data reported may include: cruise information, position, date, and time of sampling; bottom depth, sampling depths, temperature, and salinity; gear type, volume of water filtered, total dry and wet weight, and other data for total haul; and data for subsamples by species. Data on zooplankton catch by species may include subsample size, zooplankton concentration, life history code, and numbers of adults, juveniles, eggs, and larvae. Estimated density of holoplankton and meroplankton and data on ichthyoplankton may also be reported. A text record is available for comments. Note: there are two options for reporting subsample counts of individuals at different life history stages. If life history codes are used, only number of adults should be reported on that record. Additional separate records should then be used to report number of juveniles and so on. Alternatively, life history codes may not be used and number of adults, juveniles, and so entered in the proper fields of a single record.

Water physics and chemistry data were collected from bottle casts from the TAGE from 08 May 1969 to 30 December 1969. Data were submitted by the Stanford University; Hopkins Marine Station (SU). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F004 Water Physics and Chemistry format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f004.html. The F004 format is used for data from measurements and analyses of physical and chemical characteristics of the water column. Among chemical parameters that may be recorded are salinity, PH, and concentration of oxygen, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, chlorophyll, and suspended solids. Physical parameters that may be recorded include temperature, density (sigma-t), transmissivity, and current velocity (east-west and north-south components). Cruise and station information, including environmental conditions of the study site at the time of observations, is also included.

XBT data were collected from the USCGC SOUTHWIND in support of the Integrated Global Ocean Services System (IGOSS) project. Data were collected by the US Coast Guard (USCG) from 10 November 1972 to 13 November 1972. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles at depths of about 450 or 760 m. With special instruments, measurements can be obtained to 1830 m. Cruise information, position, date, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Unlike the MBT data file, in which temperature values are recorded at uniform 5m intervals, the XBT Data File contains temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths are at a minimum number of points ("inflection points") required to record the temperature curve to an acceptable degree of accuracy. On output, however, the user may request temperature values either at inflection points or interpolated to uniform depth increments.
