Los Gatos Research (LGR) proposes to develop highly-accurate, lightweight, low-power gas analyzers for measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O) aboard NASAs Sensor Integrated Environmental Remote Research Aircraft (SIERRA) unmanned aerial system (UAS). These analyzers, which will exploit both conventional mid and near-infrared tunable diode laser spectrometry and LGR's patented Off-Axis ICOS technology, will be capable of meeting the stringent weight, power, and environmental requirements for UAS deployments. At the conclusion of the Phase II effort, LGR will deliver and deploy two complete systems. The first analyzer will make extremely rapid (> 20 Hz) airborne eddy flux covariance measurements of CO2 and H2O. The second instrument will measure CO2 isotopes aboard SIERRA, allowing a better understanding of the chemistry, transport, and exchange of carbon between the atmosphere, anthropogenic sources, and natural carbon sinks and sources in the terrestrial biosphere. Airborne measurements enable regional-scale investigations of carbon sources and sinks as well as measurements where conventional tower flux deployments are infeasible. These data will complement current satellite observations by providing higher horizontal resolution and vertical profiling, enabling better quantification of carbon sources and sinks. Such deployments are critically important to NASA's Earth Science Division, because they enable more efficient and cost-effective Earth observations.

The project goals were: (1) to monitor and document physical and biological conditions, (2) to increase understanding of the relationship between upwelling / productivity and physical forcing, and (3) to educate the public about oceanic processes, in and around the Cordell Bank and Gulf of Farallones National Marine Sanctuaries.

This data set provides tree diameters and heights measured from 1999 to 2005 in plots of a secondary-growth forest fertilization experiment located 6.5-km northwest of the town of Paragominas, Para, Brazil. In the 6-year old secondary-growth forest, all trees greater than 2 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) were tagged, identified, and measured for diameter and height in November 1999. Fertilizer was applied to selected plots in January 2000 and February 2001. Tree heights and diameters were remeasured in May 2000, June 2001, July 2002, July 2004, and July 2005. All data are provided in a single comma-separated file.The site was divided into three blocks, with four treatment plots (each 20m x 20m) located in each block (3 reps x 4 treatments = 12 plots). Three of the twelve plots were fertilized with nitrogen (100 kg N/ha as urea); three were fertilized with phosphorus (50 kg P/ha as superphosphate); three were fertilized with both nitrogen and phosphorus. The remaining three plots were not fertilized and served as the experimental control..

NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC) is building high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) for select U.S. coastal regions. These integrated bathymetric-topographic DEMs are used to support tsunami forecasting and warning efforts at the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research, Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). The DEMs are part of the tsunami forecast system SIFT (Short-term Inundation Forecasting for Tsunamis) currently being developed by PMEL for the NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers, and are used in the MOST (Method of Splitting Tsunami) model developed by PMEL to simulate tsunami generation, propagation, and inundation. Bathymetric, topographic, and shoreline data used in DEM compilation are obtained from various sources, including NGDC, the U.S. National Ocean Service (NOS), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and other federal, state, and local government agencies, academic institutions, and private companies. DEMs are referenced to a vertical tidal datum of Mean High Water (MHW) or NAVD 88 and horizontal datum of World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). Grid spacings for the DEMs range from 1/3 arc-second (~10 meters) to 3 arc-seconds (~90 meters).

This dataset contains the results of a series of inshore research surveys that are taking place during 2010-2013 as part of the Gulf of Alaska Integrated Ecosystem Research Project (GOAIERP), a multidisciplinary study of the GOA ecosystem funded by the North Pacific Research Board. The project is comprised of four groups of investigators, organized as upper, middle, and lower trophic levels plus a modeling group. Investigators from the middle trophic level component are conducting the research covered by this dataset. The study area consists of two main spatial regions (eastern: the outer coast of Southeast Alaska, western: the east side of Kodiak Island and the southern coast of the Kenai Peninsula). Within each main region the surveys cover 5-6 inshore bays or systems of bays (east: Whale Bay, St. Lazaria Island, Salisbury Sound, Islas Bay, Graves Harbor, Torch Bay; west: Kiliuda Bay, Izhut Bay, Barren Islands, Port Dick, Aialik Bay). At each of the inshore sites a number of research activities are conducted: 1) acoustic transects using 38- and 120-kHz split-beam transducers are conducted throughout the site to a depth of 20m; 2) sporadic nearshore acoustics is conducted from a skiff between depths of 5-20 m; 3) a 10 m beach seine is deployed along the shoreline; 4) a 50 m purse seine is deployed in depths from 3-7 m; 5) a 3-m beam trawl is deployed sporadically; 6) a 6 m X 3 m single-warp otter trawl is sporadically used for surface tows; 7) acoustic backscatter is groundtruthed using the otter trawl, jigging, and an underwater video camera; 8) oceanography stations are conducted using a Seabird 19+ CTD, a vertical zooplankton tow using a 1 m ring net, and collection of chlorophyll and nutrients samples at depths of 1 and 20 m at each station. Fish samples are taken for analyses of diet, nutritional condition, and energy content. In 2010, pilot studies were conducted in the eastern region during July and in the western region during October. These studies did not employ all of the gears listed above, and little oceanography work was performed. In 2011, full 15-day seasonal surveys were conducted in each region (east: April, July, September; west: May, August, October). No fieldwork will be conducted during 2012. In 2013 the full seasonal surveys will once again take place.

Data from Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED), NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) Subsurface Temperature Recorders (STR) provide a time series of water temperature at coral reef sites. Data is typically collected at 1800 second intervals for a duration of 2 years using a SBE39 Temperature Recorder (Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., www.seabird.com). When a STR is recovered, a new one is typically deployed in the same place. Time series data combining multiple deployments from a given site may also be available. This data set reports the results of a study to quantify the effects of moisture and substrate availability on soil trace gas fluxes in a regrowth forest in Eastern Amazonia, Apeu, Para, Brazil, from 1999-2003. The efflux of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane (CH4) from soil was measured as a response to (1) increased soil moisture availability during the dry season by irrigation and (2) decreased substrate availability by continuous removal of aboveground litter and compared to (3) untreated control plots. Soil gas fluxes are reported in one comma-separated data file.

The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) established the Coastal-Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) for the National Weather Service in the early 1980's. NDBC has installed approximately 50 C-MAN stations on lighthouses, at capes and beaches, on near shore islands, and on offshore platforms. NDBC has deployed over 100 moored (a.k.a., weather) buoys in coastal and offshore waters from the western Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean around Hawaii, and from the Bering Sea to the South Pacific. C-MAN and moored buoy data typically include barometric pressure, wind direction, speed and gust, and air temperature; however, some C-MAN stations are equipped to also measure seawater temperature, water level, waves, and relative humidity. Moored buoys measure wave energy spectra from which NDBC derives significant wave height, dominant wave period, and average wave period. In addition, many moored buoys measure the direction of wave propagation. In collaboration, NDBC and the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) are archiving these data from C-MAN and moored buoys. This NODC Accession is part of the collaboration and it contains netCDF (version 4) files with the data collected during August 2015.
