The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has the statutory mandate to collect hydrographic data in support of nautical chart compilation for safe navigation and to provide background data for engineers, scientific, and other commercial and industrial activities. Hydrographic survey data primarily consist of water depths, but may also include features (e.g. rocks, wrecks), navigation aids, shoreline identification, and bottom type information. NOAA is responsible for archiving and distributing the source data as described in this metadata record.

Popis

Intertidal organism and habitat data were collected from 29 June 1977 to 16 August 1977. Data were collected by Western Washington State College (WWSC) as part of Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP). Data were processed by NODC to NODC standard F030 Intertidal Organism and Habitat format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f030.html. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F030 format is used for data from field sampling of marine organisms in intertidal or subtidal habitats. The data are collected to provide information about species abundance and distribution. Data from each observation may include: cruise and station information such as vessel name, senior scientist, position, date, and time; environmental conditions such as surface temperature and salinity, wind speed and direction, and sea state; sediment and habitat descriptors; and species identification and organism counts and measurements. Data may be reported for either individual or composite samples. A text record is available for reporting comments.

This document is the completed effort of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wilderness Fellows program to develop a monitoring strategy and evaluate the status of the Moosehorn Wilderness of the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge. This document gives context to the status of the Moosehorn wilderness and identifies the major management challenges associated with maintaining wilderness character. This document is intended to be a reference source for readers interested in understanding the wilderness and to detail the natural and anthropogenic impacts that threaten the state of wilderness character. The Moosehorn Wilderness Character Monitoring Plan was developed using 49 distinct measures that assess the following: untrammeled quality, natural quality, undeveloped quality, and solitude or primitive and unconfined recreation quality.

Popis

The cyclogyro, an aircraft propulsion concept with the potential for VTOL to the lower bounds of transonic flight, is conceptually simple but structurally and aerodynamically complex. To our knowledge no cyclogyro has ever flown. We propose to demonstrate through simulation and rotor testing that with appropriately designed cyclogyro rotors and propulsion algorithms, aircraft can transition smoothly from low-speed and vertical flight to near-transonic forward flight. We posit that lift and propulsion can be achieved while increasing the aircraft critical mach number above that of conventional subsonic airplanes with fixed wings. We will show that thrust and lift can be maintained across all speeds, and attainable thrust increases with increasing airspeed for constant rotor speed. Gliding and vertical autorotation can be performed safely with rotors stopped or rotating, respectively.

These data were collected by Kenneth O Coyle of University of Alaska Fairbanks as part of NEP. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-10-30. The following is the text of the abstract provided by BCO-DMO: MOCNESS catch data - zooplankton species abundance and biomass, 1997 - 2004 All data are for 1 meter-square nets, 5 mm mesh, oblique hauls.

Popis

This dataset contains a unified GeoTiff with 2x2 meter cell size representing the slope (in degrees) of the 2011 biogeographic assessment of the US Virgin Islands, derived from data collected in March 2011. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Branch, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster, as well as federal, university, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data off of St. Thomas and St. John, USVI from 03/28/2011 to 04/14/2011. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Reson 7125 multibeam echosounder (400 kHz). It was processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS software. Attitude and sound velocity correctors applied to the data. Verified tides were not applied to the data, leaving the depth values referenced to the ellipsoid. The imagery is projected in the UTM Zone 20 north, NAD83 datum. The processed CARIS data was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface based on swath angle. The CARIS Export option "BASE Surface to Image" was then used to create a GeoTiff of the priority areas. Slope was derived from this surface using the slope calculator, a function of ESRI’s Spatial Analyst extension.
