Wave spectra, meteorological, and other data were collected from FERREL. Data were collected by the National Ocean Service (NOS) from 17 May 1982 to 12 August 1982. Data has been processed by NODC to the standard NODC F191-Meteorology and Wave Spectra format. Data in this accession do not completely conform to the F191 format. Full format descriptions are available from NODC homepage at http://www.noaa.nodc.gov/. The F191 format is used to report meteorological data and ocean wave spectra data from NDBO. The format contains seven data record types to: 1) identify the buoy for position, duration, rate of sampling and heading, 2) identify the meteorological parameters, (temperature, pressure, weather, solar radiation, and surface waves), and 3) report time times series frequency, density and resolution of waves. Each record is 120 characters in length, sorted by station and record type.

As a part of PacIOOS, ocean gliders provide very detailed information about the physical and chemical condition of the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, these data get used in computer models to make predictions about currents. Ocean gliders are small, free-swimming, unmanned vehicles that can cruise the ocean for several months gathering information about the temperature, salinity, and other water properties between the surface and 1000 m depth. A pressure sensor on the glider is able to record the depth throughout the dive. Because gliders are unmanned, they communicate with scientists on land when they are at the surface using an antenna on the end of the glider. The SeaGlider autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) was designed at the University of Washington (UW) Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). These data are taken from Mission 3 of SeaGlider 114.

Current direction data were collected using moored current meter casts in the North Pacific Ocean from April 24, 1984 to June 1, 1984. Data were submitted by National Ocean Service (NOS). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Current Meter Data (F005) format. Full current meter moorings descriptions are available at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f005.html. The F005 format is used for time series measurements of ocean currents obtained using moored current-measuring instruments, principally Aanderaa current meters (manufactured by Aanderaa Instruments Inc.). These data represent the Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed mooring point and measure flow past the sensor. Position, water depth, and sensor depth are reported for each station. The data record comprises values of current direction and speed at specified date and time. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10-15 minute time intervals. Other environmental parameters may also be reported. These include: water temperature, salinity, conductivity, and transmissivity; wind direction and speed; and dominant wave direction, height, and period. A text field is available for optional comments.

Pressure gauge and CTD data were collected from the ICE ISLANDS and other platforms in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas from 25 July 1982 to 08 March 1984. Data were collected by the Science Applications, Inc. - Raleigh NC (SAI) in support of the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F022 High-Resolution CTD/STD Output Format and the F017 Pressure Gauge Format. Full format and format code descriptions are available at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-datafmts.html. The F022 format contains high-resolution data collected using CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) and STD (salinity-temperature-depth) instruments. As they are lowered and raised in the oceans, these electronic devices provide nearly continuous profiles of temperature, salinity, and other parameters. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering or obtained by interpolation and may be reported at depth intervals as fine as 1m. Cruise and instrument information, position, date, time and sampling interval are reported for each station. Environmental data at the time of the cast (meteorological and sea surface conditions) may also be reported. The data record comprises values of temperature, salinity or conductivity, density (computed sigma-t), and possibly dissolved oxygen or transmissivity at specified depth or pressure levels. Data may be reported at either equally or unequally spaced depth or pressure intervals. A text record is available for comments. The F017 format contains time series measurements of seawater pressure from anchored or bottom-mounted sensors. Measurements of variations at depth of seawater pressure provide information on tidal and storm flows, ocean circulation, and other phenomena that cause changes in sea surface elevation or slope and that can be detected from their pressure signature. Position, bottom depth, and gauge depth are reported for each station. The data record comprises values of total pressure at specified date and time. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at time intervals of 10-15 minutes. Seawater temperature may also be reported. Comments may be reported in a text record.
