CREWS Standard (CREWS-STD) buoys are equipped to measure sea surface water temperature and conductivity (Sea-Bird Model SBE37-SM, Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., www.seabird.com) at 1 m (nominal) below the water line and air temperature (R.M Young Model 41342); barometric pressure (Heise DXD and wind vectors (Vaisala WAS425A) at 2 m (nominal) above the water line. A compass (KVH C100 SE-25) is used in the calculation of wind direction and a GPS system provides geolocation. This metadata record refers to the dataset uploaded from the SBE37-SM sea surface temperature and conductivity recorder. When a CREWS buoy is recovered, another one is typically deployed in the same place. Time series data combining multiple deployments from a given site may also be available. Bottle, CTD, and XBT data were collected in the Arctic, North Atlantic, and North Pacific Oceans from the ANTON DOHRN and other vessels from 02 July 1916 to 28 January 1999. Data include temperature and salinity profiles. Data also include concentration profiles of chlorophyll a, oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, and silicate. Data were submitted by the Marine Environmental Data Service (MEDS) of Canada and are in the MEDS ASCII format.

Scientists from the Fishery Resource Analysis and Monitoring (FRAM) division at the NOAA Fisheries Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC), the Fishery Resources Division (FRD) at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC), and the Pacific region of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) conducted the 2012 Integrated Acoustic Survey (IAT) survey aboard the NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada and the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) W.E. Ricker. Both vessels are stern trawlers equipped for fisheries and oceanographic research. The Shimada surveyed from 35.8?N to 50.8?N between June 25 and August 23, and the Ricker surveyed from 48.8?N to 55.3?N between August 15 and September 6. The industry-provided vessel the F/V Forum Star was primarily for groudtruthing activity, trawling with an Aleutian wing trawl 24/20 (AWT), and remained in the vicinity the Shimada between June 28 and August 11. The portion of the survey conducted with the Bell M. Shimada focuses on both Pacific sardine (Sardinops sagax) and Pacific hake (Merluccius productus), a Joint U.S.-Canada Integrated Acoustic and Trawl Survey of Pacific Hake and Pacific Sardine (SaKe 2012) covered the area from the Southern California Bight (SCB), CA to north end of the Vancouver Island, Canada. The data include here are those collected on NOAA Ship Bell M. Shimada only, i.e. Sake 2012 data only. Hake and sardine populations were surveyed along a series of parallel line transects that in general were oriented east-west, spaced at an interval of 10 nmi apart, and traversed sequentially in alternating directions; some areas in Canadian waters were better covered with transects that ran in a zigzag or north-south orientation. The survey began northwest of Morro Bay, California, proceeded north toward Dixon Entrance, and finished along the west side of Haida Gwaii (formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands). Hake aggregations were targeted along the continental shelf and upper slope of the entire survey area, whereas sardine aggregations were targeted only as far north as the northern tip of Vancouver Island. The Shimada was tasked with completing transects up to the north end of Vancouver Island, from which point the Ricker completed the remaining transects north to Dixon Entrance and along the west coast of Haida Gwaii. Sea depth at the inshore end of individual transects was nominally 30 m, although a few transects ended in waters deeper than 30 m because of restricted areas, navigation hazards, or boat traffic. Offshore extent of individual transects was typically at a depth of 1,500 m or at a point 35 nmi west of the inshore waypoint, whichever resulted in a longer transect.

The U.S. National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) operates the Global Argo Data Repository (GADR) as the long-term archive for the International Global Argo Project (for additional information about Argo, see http://www.argo.ucsd.edu/ (last accessed September 2004)). Argo data archived by the US NODC on a weekly basis starting the second quarter of FY 2003, may include real-time and/or delayed-mode profiles of ocean temperature and salinity, as well as related conductivity and/or pressure measurements (if any), collected by Argo profiling floats.

Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are an integral component in oil-spill contingency planning and assessment. They serve as a source of information in the event of an oil spill incident. ESI maps contain three types of information: shoreline habitats (classified according to their sensitivity to oiling), sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Most often, this information is plotted on 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles, although in the Alaska ESI maps, USGS topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 are used, and in other ESI maps, NOAA charts have been used as the base map. Collections of these maps, grouped by state or a logical geographic area, are published as ESI atlases. Digital data have been published for most of the U.S. shoreline, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

The Nominal Point Density of this dataset is approximately 1.66 meters for unobscured areas. This project is a cooperative effort between the National Ocean Service, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment, the University of Hawaii, and Analytical Laboratories of Hawaii, LLC. The goal of the work was to develop coral reef mapping methods and compare benthic habitat maps generated by photointerpreting georeferenced color aerial photography, hyperspectral and IKONOS satellite imagery. The enhanced spectral resolution of hyperspectral and control of bandwidths of multispectral data yield an advantage over color aerial photography particularly when coral health and time series analysis of coral reef community structure are of interest. Depending on the type of instrument, a spectral imaging system can be utilized to see multiple colors from ultraviolet through the far infrared range. The AURORA hyperspectral imaging system collected 72 ten nm bands in the visible and near infrared spectral range with a 3 meter pixel resolution. The data was processed to select band widths, which optimized feature detection in shallow and deep water. Photointerpreters can accurately and reliably delineate boundaries of features in the imagery as they appear on the computer monitor using a software interface such as the Habitat Digitizer.
