Oxygen (average seabed consumption) data were collected using pressure gauge from March 11, 1973 to July 1, 1973. Data were submitted by Scripps Institution of Oceanography in part of the International Decade of Ocean Exploration / Mid-Ocean Dynamics Experiment (IDOE/MODE). The goal was to measure variations in the pressure differences between stations, for comparison with corresponding variations in currents. Study was conducted as part of the MODE/IDOE Bottom Experiment. Bottom Moored Pressure sea floor capsule data was collected on the NW Atlantic by the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics. Data was submitted by Bernard D. Zetler. A paper on mode bottom experiment is included.

This project is a cooperative effort among the National Ocean Service, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment; the University of Hawaii; and Analytical Laboratories of Hawaii, LLC. The goal of the work was to develop coral reef mapping methods and compare benthic habitat maps generated by photointerpreting georeferenced color aerial photography, hyperspectral and IKONOS satellite imagery. The enhanced spectral resolution of hyperspectral and control of bandwidths of multispectral data yield an advantage over color aerial photography particularly when coral health and time series analysis of coral reef community structure are of interest. Depending on the type of instrument, a spectral imaging system can be utilized to see multiple colors from ultraviolet through the far infrared range. The AURORA hyperspectral imaging system collected 72 ten nm bands in the visible and near infrared spectral range with a 3 meter pixel resolution. The data was processed to select band widths, which optimized feature detection in shallow and deep water. Photointerpreters can accurately and reliably delineate boundaries of features in the imagery as they appear on the computer monitor using a software interface such as the Habitat Digitizer.

Current meter components data were collected from FIXED PLATFORMS in Coastal Waters of S. Alaska from 06 November 1987 to 01 May 1987. Data were collected by the University of Alaska - Fairbanks; Institute of Marine Science (UAK/IMS). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F015 Current Meter Components format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f015.html. The F015 format contains time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent the Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record includes values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10 - 15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure and conductivity or salinity may also be reported. Physical, current, meteorological, and other data were collected from XBT casts, buoys, and other instruments from a World-Wide distribution. Data were collected from 09 January 2003 to 10 February 2003. Data were submitted by the Marine Environmental Data Service (MEDS) in support of the Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (Argo), the Gulf of Mexico NOAA/NMFS Ship of Opportunity (SOOP), and the Global Temperature-Salinity Pilot Project (GTSPP). Physical parameters include profiles of temperature and salinity. Current parameters include current direction and speed. Meteorological data include dry bulb temperature, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, and air pressure.

SWFSC is currently working on a project identifying global marine isotopes using leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) as the indicator species. We currently have stable carbon and nitrogen isotope data for nearly 800 leatherback turtles distributed among three ocean basins (Pacific, Atlantic, Indian).

Preliminary hard and soft seafloor substrate map derived from an unsupervised classification of multibeam backscatter and bathymety derivatives at the U.S. Territory of Guam. The dataset was derived using Reson 8101 backscatter data, bathymetric variance and bathymetric rugosity. The sonar frequency is 240 kHz for the Reson 8101 backscatter data, which were resampled to a 5 m grid cell size prior to the classification. Limited seafloor photographs for groundtruthing are available for Guam and therefore no supervised classification was performed and we are unable to visually or empirically evaluate the accuracy of the unsupervised classification seafloor substrate map. However, in locations such French Frigate Shoals, NWHI and Tutuila, American Samoa, where ground truth data are available, the unsupervised classification method is a robust predictor of substrate type in similar depth ranges and seafloor environments.
