The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has the statutory mandate to collect hydrographic data in support of nautical chart compilation for safe navigation and to provide background data for engineers, scientific, and other commercial and industrial activities. Hydrographic survey data primarily consist of water depths, but may also include features (e.g. rocks, wrecks), navigation aids, shoreline identification, and bottom type information. NOAA is responsible for archiving and distributing the source data as described in this metadata record.

NODC Accession 0115257 includes chemical, meteorological, physical and underway - surface data collected from L'ASTROLABE in the Indian Ocean, South Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea from 2012-01-07 to 2012-11-22 and retrieved during cruise 353L20120107, 353L20120218 and 353L20121023. These data include AIR-SEA DIFFERENCE - PARTIAL PRESSURE (OR FUGACITY) OF CARBON DIOXIDE, BAROMETRIC PRESSURE, CARBON DIOXIDE - AIR, Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, SALINITY, SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE, WIND DIRECTION and WIND SPEED. The instruments used to collect these data include Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer and Shower head chamber equilibrator for autonomous carbon dioxide (CO2) measurement. These data were collected by Bronte Tilbrook of Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization as part of the VOS_L_Astrolabe_2012_AL1112R2, VOS_L_Astrolabe_2012_AL1112R4 and VOS_L_Astrolabe_2012_AL1213R0 data set. The Global Volunteer Observing Ship (VOS) Program is coordinated by the UNESCO International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP). International groups from 14 countries have been outfitting research ships and commercial vessels with automated CO2 sampling equipment to analyze the carbon exchange between the ocean and atmosphere.

NODC Accession 0115259 includes tows and biological data collected aboard the CHARTER/FISHING BOATS during cruises GP0401-01 and GP0401-02 in the Gulf of Alaska and North Pacific Ocean from 2004-10-19 to 2004-11-08. These data include ANIMALS - INDIVIDUAL - COUNTS, Displacement Volume, TAXONOMIC CODE, SPECIES IDENTIFICATION - SEX and species abundance. The instruments used to collect these data include net. These data were collected by Edward D. Cokelet and Edward V. Farley of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Ken Coyle and Seth Danielson of University of Alaska Fairbanks as part of NEP. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-09-24. Marine Ecosystem Monitoring in the Northern Gulf of Alaska (http://www.ims.uaf.edu/GLOBEC/)web site GAK1 Time Series (http://www.ims.uaf.edu/gak1/) web site This project is to conduct the Gulf of Alaska Long-Term Observation Program (GOA-LTOP) as part of Phase II of the Northeast Pacific (NEP) GLOBEC program. The GOA shelf supports a rich ecosystem that includes many commercially important fisheries. The basis for this productivity is enigmatic for the GOA shelf is deep, forced by downwelling-favorable winds, and fed by a massive nutrient-poor coastal freshwater discharge. Both the winds and the freshwater discharge are intimately linked to the strength and position of the Aleutian Low. The GOA ecosystem experiences substantial physical and biological changes on decadal and interannual time scales. Although some of these changes are correlated with various climatic indices a mechanistic understanding of climate change and ecosystem response is unavailable. The generic goal of this LTOP is to understand and quantify temporal (seasonal and interannual) and spatial (cross- and along-shelf) variations in the thermohaline, chemical, and biological properties and relationships of this shelf. Our proposal supports GLOBEC goals that will help: 1) retrospective studies interpret historical data, 2) design a cost-effective long-term monitoring program, 3) provide the seasonal and interannual context for concurrent mesoscale and process studies, and 4) provide boundary conditions and data sets for model evaluation. This 5-year project entails 4 field years and a fifth year for data analyses and synthesis. The field effort involves seven, 9-day interdisciplinary cruises/year in the northern GOA. The study area encompasses the 220-km long, Seward Line (sampled in the 1970s) that extends across the shelf and slope and high resolution sampling of the Alaska Coastal Current (ACC), upstream, downstream, and within Prince William Sound. The ACC is an important shelf habitat for yoy salmon migrating from nursery areas in the sound and into the GOA. The sampling protocol follows GLOBEC guidelines and uses gear types and techniques similar to those in the Oregon LTOP that is also a part of the NEP-GLOBEC program. Most of the research will be conducted from the R/V Alpha Helix. Fish sampling will be done from a chartered trawler in July, August, and October. Both vessels will work together during these cruises so that the fishing charter can verify fish targets detected on the acoustics array towed from the Alpha Helix. Post-cruise download of raw data from shipboard computer(s) as furnished by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Shipboard Scientific Support Group and archived by the Marine Biological Laboratory Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Library for the R/V Oceanus - Cruise 347 Leg 01. These data are part of a collection of ocean observation data from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ships OCEANUS (call sign WXAQ; built 1975.00; IMO 7603617), KNORR (call sign KCEJ; built 1970.00; IMO 7738618), and the ATLANTIS (call sign KAQP; built 1997.03; IMO 9105798). The data sets are the downloads of the shipboard computers after an individual cruise. As such, they contain basic raw and processed physical and meteorological data from the cruise. A data set may include XBT, CTD, and XCTD profiles, underway thermosalinograph and atmospheric measurements, gravity and magnetic field measurements, current measurements from ADCP, and still photographs from the Alvin submersible (Atlantis cruises only). Other data types (ROV, nutrients measured from bottle samples, etc.) and photographs documenting the cruise may be included.

Argo data archived by the US NODC on a weekly basis starting the second quarter of FY 2003, may include real-time and/or delayed-mode profiles of ocean temperature and salinity, as well as related conductivity and/or pressure measurements (if any), collected by Argo profiling floats.

This data set comprises the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps for the shoreline of northern California which were designed to be utilized in desktop GIS systems. ESI data characterize coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats; sensitive biological resources; and human-use resources. This Atlas was compiled from geographical and biological data with multiple dates; the intertidal habitats were mapped during aerial and ground surveys conducted from 20-26 October 1992, and biological and human-use resources data were compiled by regional biologists in 1994. The dates for the original data and methodology are completely documented in within the included FGDC metadata file "METADATA.PDF" and document "INTRO.PDF". A set of associated .PDF maps are also included.

Watershed Sciences, Inc. (WSI) collected Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data on the Quinault River Basin survey area for the Puget Sound LiDAR Consortium and the Quinault Indian Nation. Delivery 1 of the survey area was collected on April 16th, 29th, 30th, and May 1st, 2011 and delivered on June 14th, 2011. Delivery 2 of the survey area was collected on November 6th -19th, and December 1st - 4th, 2011. This report documents the data acquisition, processing methods, accuracy assessment, and deliverables for the first 91,162 acres of Delivery 1 data and the final 144,033 acres of Delivery 2 data for a total of 234,394 acres. The requested area was expanded to include a 100m buffer to ensure complete coverage and adequate point densities around survey area boundaries. The 2012 Quinault River Basin data (Delivery 2) were integrated with overlapping portions of the 2011 data (Delivery 1) to provide seamless models.

Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are an integral component in oil-spill contingency planning and assessment. They serve as a source of information in the event of an oil spill incident.ESI maps contain three types of information: shoreline habitats (classified according to their sensitivity to oiling), sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Most often, this information is plotted on 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles, although in the Alaska ESI maps, USGS topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 are used, and in other ESI maps, NOAA charts have been used as the base map. Collections of these maps, grouped by state or a logical geographic area, are published as ESI atlases. Digital data have been published for most of the U.S. shoreline, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.
