Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps are an integral component in oil-spill contingency planning and assessment. They serve as a source of information in the event of an oil spill incident. ESI maps contain three types of information: shoreline habitats (classified according to their sensitivity to oiling), sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. Most often, this information is plotted on 7.5 minute USGS quadrangles, although in the Alaska ESI maps, USGS topographic maps at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000 are used, and in other ESI maps, NOAA charts have been used as the base map. Collections of these maps, grouped by state or a logical geographic area, are published as ESI atlases. Digital data have been published for most of the U.S. shoreline, including Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico.

Knowing the identities and sources of prey items is fundamental to understanding trophic relationships. Stock assessments frequently cite predator-prey/food habits studies as an area of needed research. We examined the feeding habits of pelagic juvenile rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) collected off Oregon and Washington during 2000, 2002, and 2006. The predominant species collected in all years were darkblotched (S. crameri), canary (S. pinniger), yellowtail (S. flavidus), and widow (S. entomelas) rockfishes. Canary, widow and darkblotched have all been declared overfished by the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC), though widow and darkblotched are now classified as rebuilding. The work was done by 2 FTEs and 1 temp hire (FTE), and involved collecting juvenile rockfish from Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics (GLOBEC) and Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) cruises, and analyzing their stable isotopes and gut contents. Comprehensively, these results add to our understanding of some of the important environmental factors that affect young-of-the-year rockfish during their pelagic phase. A manuscript for peer-reviewed publication is currently in internal review. Management audience is stock assessors and the Council. Project was one-time and stands alone. d15N and d13C values for select species of rockfish collected off Oregon and Washington.

CRED shallow Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) casts are vertical profiles (max 30 meter depth, downcast only) of temperature, conductivity and pressure. Data are collected at select nearshore locations, both around islands or banks and within lagoons. Data processing was performed using Seabird Instrument's SeaSoft SBE Data Processing Software (http://www.seabird.com/software/SBEDataProcforWindows.htm). Data format is discreet, tabular (formatted, space delimited ASCII) files for each profile, with a full header as provided by SeaSoft. Raw file extension is HEX, processed file extension is CNV. The header contains latitude, longitude and other location information, as well as all data processing steps and settings. All dates and times are UTC. All positions are WGS84 decimal degrees.
