R/V Albatross Globec broadscale cruises 1995-1999, shipboard meteorology and sea surface measurements along the ship's track Comments submitted by Jim Manning These data are accessed under the GLOBEC homepage-->Georges Bank data-->broadscale-->alongtrack or homepage-->Georges Bank data-->broadscale-->{year}-->alongtrack or homepage-->Georges Bank data-->process-->alongtrack or homepage-->Georges Bank data-->process-->{year}-->alongtrack. These are single ascii files per cruise with several variables merged to one minute (interpolated) time steps. The user should be aware of the availability of the unmerged "raw" data if they want the actual data which, for some sensors/variables, was recorded as frequent as every 5 seconds and by more than one instrument. Contact Jim Manning for access to thes data. The first column is the time stamp which, for Albatross convention, is "yrday1_local" which means, for example, that a time of "1.5" represents local noontime on Jan 1st. Note that the "Albatross yearday convention changed to GMT after year 2000, so the user must pay attention to the time stamp in future cruises. I have been processing Albatross and Delaware alongtrack data on an "as requested" basis so just let me know when you want a particular cruise that is not already posted. More recent (post GLOBEC) data are being stored in as ORACLE database and served via OpenDAP as documented elsewhere. (http://www.nefsc.noaa.gov/epd/ocean/MainPage/AlongTrack.html) We all understand this data (shipboard temp, salt, wind, etc.) should be treated as uncalibrated records and should not be used for other than exploratory purposes. This shapefile denotes the location of underwater photos and/or video that were collected by NOAA scientists using a drop camera system. Photos and/or video were collected between 04/14/2007 and 04/24/2007 at 84 locations around Isla de Mona in Puerto Rico and west of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico in the U.S. Caribbean. These photos and videos will be manually classified into different habitat classes, and integrated with the abiotic data collected by the acoustic sonar (sound navigation and ranging) systems to develop a benthic habitat map for the U.S. Caribbean. Habitat maps describe the location of habitat features (in relation to the shoreline), their physical composition and the types of organisms that colonize them. Fundamentally, habitat maps provide critical information about the extent, health and composition of marine resources, which is vital for communicating information about the distribution and abundance of species to resource managers, scientists and the public. Habitat maps also support an increasing number of landscape ecology studies, as well as the process of marine spatial planning, including the design and evaluation of marine protected areas (MPAs).

NODC Accession 0115585 includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from PELAGIA in the Bay of Biscay and North Atlantic Ocean from 1996-06-18 to 1996-06-18 and retrieved during cruise CARINA/64PE19960618. These data include DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, SALINITY, SILICATE and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by H.M. van Aken of Netherlands Institute for Sea Research as part of the CARINA/64PE19960618, WOCE AR12e data set. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major component of the World Climate Research Program with the overall goal of better understanding the ocean's role in climate and climatic changes resulting from both natural and anthropogenic causes. The CO2 survey took advantage of the sampling opportunities provided by the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) cruises during this period between 1990 and 1998. The final collection covers approximately 23,000 stations from 94 WOCE cruises.

Data are from underwater visual surveys of fish stocks at 23 sites in West Hawaii. Survey sites are 8 to 14 m deep and are all located on reef shelfs with moderate to high Porites compressa cover, the predominant habitat type at that depth on West Hawaii reefs, and the key habitat for the majority of fishes harvested for the aquarium trade. The survey program began as the West Hawaii Aquarium Project (WHAP) but since 2004 has continued as part of DAR's Main Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Monitoring Program.

This dataset was provided by the Recreational Fisheries Information Network (RecFIN), and contained GPS coordinates for 680 CPFV trips during 1999 and 2001 at depths ranging from 0 - 2200 m. Fishers targeted specific species during each trip, and visited between 1 and 22 locations. Each trip/location combination was considered a unique site and was used as a sample unit in analyses. RecFIN provided information on four hook and line fishing methods: free drift, stationary drift, anchor, and troll. The trolling trips were removed before analysis because they targeted specific pelagic species and therefore provide limited information about diversity. The final data set analyzed for diversity contained information on 130 fish species at 4085 trip/location combinations. Diversity was calculated for each trip/location using the Shannon Index of diversity. Using ArcGIS, 5 x 5 minute grids were created and mean diversity was calculated for each grid cell containing data.

NODC Accession 0104431 includes underway - surface, meteorological, physical, chemical and optical data collected aboard the OCEANUS during cruises OC317, OC319, OC321, OC322, OC331, OC332, OC333 and OC334 in the North Atlantic Ocean from 1998-02-07 to 1998-12-14. These data include CONDUCTIVITY, WIND DIRECTION, SHORTWAVE IRRADIANCE, AIR TEMPERATURE, WIND SPEED, LONGWAVE IRRADIANCE, RELATIVE HUMIDITY, SALINITY - SURFACE WATER, BAROMETRIC PRESSURE, PRECIPITATION and SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include thermosalinographs. These data were collected by Richard Payne of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as part of GB. The Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO) submitted these data to NODC on 2013-04-12. The following is the text of the abstract provided by BCO-DMO: Continuous along track meteorology and sea surface data, 1 minute values, 1998 Processed by: Richard Payne Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Woods Hole, MA 20543 rpayne@whoi.edu (mailto:rpayne@whoi.edu) Additional data processing notes (http://globec.whoi.edu/globec-dir/data_doc/additional_endeavor_processing_details.html) are available. The sea surface temperature as measured by the hull sensor is not shown since the sea surface temperature as measured via the engine inlet (field name is temp_ss1) is more accurate. Processing Notes Concatenate daily 1 minute files into one file for whole cruise Edit file for obvious bad data, i.e., missing data, garbage characters, etc. Run program which reformats data. Output parameters: Year day, lat, long, Speed made good, course made good, gyro 1 & 2, Edo speed, Edo indicator, port wind speed, starboard ws, port wind azimuth, starboard waz, air temp, relative humidity, barometric pressure, sea surface temp @5m & 1m depth, Edo depth, Chirp sonar depth. Put plots of all parameters on screen and look for obvious single bad points. Edit in basic concatenated file. Except I have not edited depths. Iterate steps 2-4 until no more obvious bad points. Run second program which computes true wind speed and direction from speed and course made good, gyros, larger of port or starboard ws and accompanying wind azimuth. Outputs are year day, lat lon, speed and course made good, gyro, relative ws and direction, true ws and direction, air temp, relative humidity, barometric pressure, short- and long-wave radiation,5m and 1m sea surface temps, Edo depth, Chirp sonar depth, Edo speed, Edo indicator. Check plots of true wind speed and direction to make sure they look ok. Run vector averaging program which produces 60 minute series. The program uses 60 consecutive records and does not check for missing records. I have not carried depths since hourly averages do not seem useful nor Edo speeds since they seem pretty generally useless. Output parameters are: Year day, lat, long, true wind speed and direction, air temp, relative humidity, barometric pressure, short- and long-wave radiation, sea surface temp @ 5m & 1m. From: Richard E. Payne, April 27, 1998 Updated: April 28, 2004; G.Heimerdinger
