The Land and Marine Gravity 1999 Edition 2-volume CD-ROM set contains observed and derived land and marine gravity data contributed by many national and international organizations, from both the academic and government sectors. Approximately 70 percent of the data are observed values--regional station data collections (separated primarily by contributors) and absolute gravity measurements. Grids and other derived summary data sets represent another 30 percent of the data. In general, data record parameters include Latitude, Longitude, Observed Gravity and Elevation, Bouguer Gravity Anomaly (land), and Free- air Anomaly (ocean). In all cases, each data set contains associated documentation, including source contributor. Data are in binary format with ancillary files for conversion of the data to ASCII. On the Land Gravity CD- ROM, data sets are grouped into directories based on type: Absolute, Grids, Regional, Global, and Correlative (Geoids). The Marine Gravity CD-ROM has gravity data from 1,555 ocean surveys grouped by regional location of the survey. Directories exist for the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean and Black Seas, North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic and South Atlantic. Surveys which cross ocean areas are included in both regional directories. The marine gravity data were collected from ships operated between the years 1961 and 1996. The Marine gravity surveys are provided in a modified MGD77 format containing survey location, observed gravity and free air-anomaly. The 1999 Edition of Gravity Data is Year 2000 compliant. All date values are full 4-digit years. The GeoVu geophysical data browse and visualization software is also Year 2000 compliant. The compliance is inherent because there are no built-in date manipulation routines. However, GeoVu is written to run on specific platforms and operating systems. There is no guarantee that GeoVu will operate on platforms other than those indicated in the Software documentation.

This data set contains polygons that represent the following sensitive human-use management areas in Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington: aquaculture sites, commercial fishing areas, Indian reservations, marine sanctuaries, Nature Conservancy areas, national parks, recreational fishing areas, state parks, subsistence areas, wildlife refuges, and other management areas. Location-specific type and source information is stored in relational data tables (described below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer.This data set comprises a portion of the Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) data for Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil. The ESI data include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources. This dataset contains an ESRI Grid with 1 meter cell size representing the bathymetry of the south shore of St. John, US Virgin Islands. Due to the large file size of the St. John project area, it was divided into four component grids for improved manageability, named STJ_1m_grid1, STJ_1m_grid2, STJ_1m_grid3, and STJ_1m_grid4 from west to east. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team and NOAA/NOS/OCS/HSD personnel, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in the US Virgin Islands from 2/18/04 to 3/5/04. Data was acquired with a pole-mounted Reson 8101 ER multibeam echosounder (240 kHz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS v5.4 software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM zone 20 north, datum WGS84. The processed CARIS data was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface based on swath angle with footprint size 3*3. An ASCII XYZ file was exported from the BASE surface and opened in ESRI ArcMap 9 as an XY event. Then the ArcToolbox conversion tool 'Feature to Raster', with cell size 1, was used to generate the final ESRI Grid. While the project was conducted to meet IHO Order 2 accuracy standards, there is a roll artifact (averaging 0.5m high) in the dataset that the user should take into consideration when performing any analysis.

MBT data were collected from the USS LIMPKINS in support of the Fleet Observations of Oceanographic Data (FLOOD) project. Data were collected by US Navy; Ships of Opportunity from 27 November 1961 to 30 November 1961. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

Current and other data were collected from meters attached to fixed platforms by Science Applications, INC (SAI) from 22 October 1980 to 01 April 1981. Data were collected as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F015 Current Meter Components format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f015.html. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F015 format contains time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent the Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record includes values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10 - 15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure and conductivity or salinity may also be reported. The Hanna Shoal Ecosystem Study is a multi-disciplinary investigation to examine the biological, chemical and physical properties that define this ecosystem. The study extends the monitoring initiated under the COMIDA CAB program, in which over 70 stations were occupied in the northern Chukchi Sea with a focus on trophic structure, sediments, inventories of anthropogenic chemicals (trace metals and organics), and inventories of benthic and epibenthic fauna. The Hanna Shoal study adds (1) a pelagic component to address standing stocks of phytoplankton and zooplankton and (2) a physical oceanographic study that addresses water mass movements through direct measurement of circulation, density fields, ice conditions and modeling.
