The National Marine Sanctuary Program (NMSP) updates and revises the management plans for each of its 13 sanctuaries. This process, which is open to the public, enables each site to revisit the reasons for sanctuary designation and assess whether they are meeting their goals, as well as to set new goals consistent with the mandates of the National Marine Sanctuaries Act. Issues raised by the public during this process are evaluated and a determination is made as to whether they will be incorporated into the updated plan. Many of these issues focus on topics such as the implementation of marine zoning or sanctuary boundary adjustments, both of which require information on the distribution of resources within and around the sanctuary. Recognizing this, NMSP and NOAAs National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) formalized an agreement to collaborate in the revision process by developing such information through a series of biogeographic assessments conducted in selected sanctuaries. The resulting products are then supplied to sanctuary managers and staff for use in the policy and decision making process. This collaborative effort began along the west coast of the U.S. with the Cordell Bank, Gulf of Farallones, and Monterey Bay national marine sanctuaries, and is herein centered on the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS).

This data collection includes data from multiple SVP and APEX drifters deployed in the region around the Hawaiian Islands to assess ocean currents and sea surface temperature. SVP and APEX drifter data files contain drifter ids, year, month, day, hour, minute, second, GPS latitude and longitude. Drifter data was collected hourly. All dates and times are UTC. The data files (.dbf) do not include temperature measurements. The Integrated Science Data Management (ISDM) office processes oceanographic profiles reported for the world oceans in near real-time from the Global Telecommunications System (GTS) for the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP). These data also support the activities of the Ship-of-Opportunity Programme Implementation Panel (SOOPIP) and the WOCE Upper Ocean Thermal Program (WOCE UOT).

The CoOP RISE program collected CTD and water chemistry (macronutrients, chlorophyll) data during four cruises from 2004-2006 off the Oregon and Washington coast, centered on the Columbia River. CTD data are submitted separately to NODC by PI Barbara Hickey. The data included here are from discrete water samples collected by CTD Niskin bottle on the R/V Wecoma. Data are in plain ASCII text.

In the spring of 2005, Sanborn as part of the Dewberry team was contracted to execute a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) survey campaign to collect the 3-dimensional positions of a dense set of masspoints for the entire 689 plus square mile project area of Baltimore County, Maryland. These data are suitable for the development of a digital elevation model (DEM) to support orthometric photo rectification and contouring. The lidar first and Last Return value data were obtained from the post processed data and provided in separate files containing all georeferenced First Return and Last Return data in an ASCII comma delimited format to the NOAA Office for Coastal Management. For data storage and Digital Coast provisioning purposes, the NOAA Office for Coastal Management converted the ascii data to geographic coordinates, ellipsoid heights in meters, and las format and created a bare earth data set using an automated algorithm.

A genetic analysis of samples from the chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) bycatch of the 2006 Bering Sea walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) trawl fishery was undertaken to determine the overall stock composition of the sample set. Samples were genotyped for eleven microsatellite markers and results were estimated using the current chum salmon microsatellite baseline. In 2006, genetic samples were collected opportunistically as part of a special project, but sample biases have the potential to affect stock composition analysis results. Consequently, stock composition estimates apply to the sample set and may not represent the entire chum salmon bycatch. Based on the analysis of 1,367 chum salmon bycatch samples collected throughout the 2006 Bering Sea trawl fishery, North Asian (31%), East Asian (29%), and Pacific Northwest (25%) stocks dominated the sample set with smaller contributions from Western Alaska (8%) and Upper/Middle Yukon River (6%) stocks. The estimates for the 2006 chum salmon bycatch sample set were similar to the 2005 and 2009 chum salmon bycatch estimates, suggesting consistency of the regional stock contributions across years. Analysis of temporal groupings within the groundfish B season revealed changes in stock composition during the course of the season with decreasing contribution of Upper/Middle Yukon stocks over time, but leaves unanswered whether these changes are due to temporal or spatial differences in the sample set.

This dataset has 5-day 20C Isotherm Depth data (the depth at which the ocean temperature is 20C) from the TAO/TRITON (Pacific Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/), RAMA (Indian Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/rama/), and PIRATA (Atlantic Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/pirata/) arrays of moored buoys which transmit oceanographic and meteorological data to shore in real-time via the Argos satellite system. These buoys are major components of the CLIVAR climate analysis project and the GOOS, GCOS, and GEOSS observing systems. 5-day data is an average of daily values collected during consecutive five day intervals. A minimum of 2 daily values are required to compute a 5-day average. This dataset contains realtime and delayed mode data (see the 'source' variable). Bathythermograph data were collected from the YAKUTAT within a 1-mile radius of Ocean Weather Station E (3500N 04800W) and in transit. Data were collected by the United States Coast Guard from 14 December 1962 to 08 January 1963. The platform was equipped and staffed to observe weather and sea conditions. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT file format is used for temperature-depth profile data obtained using the mechanical bathythermograph (MBT) instrument. The maximum depth of MBT observations is approximately 285 m. Therefore, MBT data are useful only in studying the thermal structure of the upper layers of the ocean. Cruise information, date, position, and time are reported for each observation. The data record comprises pairs of temperature-depth values. Temperature data in this file are recorded at uniform 5 m depth intervals.

Data from Coral Reef Ecosystem Division (CRED), NOAA Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) Subsurface Temperature Recorders (STR) provide a time series of water temperature at coral reef sites. Data is typically collected at 1800 second intervals for a duration of 2 years using a SBE39 Temperature Recorder (Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., www.seabird.com). When a STR is recovered, a new one is typically deployed in the same place. Time series data combining multiple deployments from a given site may also be available.
