The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has the statutory mandate to collect hydrographic data in support of nautical chart compilation for safe navigation and to provide background data for engineers, scientific, and other commercial and industrial activities. Hydrographic survey data primarily consist of water depths, but may also include features (e.g. rocks, wrecks), navigation aids, shoreline identification, and bottom type information. NOAA is responsible for archiving and distributing the source data as described in this metadata record.

Marine bird sighting and other data were collected from aircraft and other platforms from 25 April 1978 to 27 September 1978. Data were collected by the University of California (UC) as part of the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP). Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F033 Marine Bird Sighting, Ship/Aircraft Census format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F033 format contains data from field observations of marine birds made along ship or aircraft survey tracks. These data are collected to provide information on population density and distribution. Start and end position, date and elapsed time, speed and course, platform type and observing techniques are reported for each survey. Environmental information may include meteorological and sea surface conditions, distances to the shoreline and shelf break, ice characteristics within and outside each transect and surface debris, including oil slicks. Species data may include age, sex, color, plumage, number of individuals, direction of flight, behavior and food source association. Any number of species may be reported within one observation time span.

Temperature profiles were collected from XBT casts from the GULF SHIPPER from 01 August 1972 to 02 October 1972. Data were collected by the Lykes Brothers Lines and other institutions as part of the Marine Resources Monitoring, Assessment and Prediction (MARMAP) project. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Universal Bathythermograph Output (UBT) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/bt.html. The UBT format contains temperature-depth profile data obtained using expendable bathythermograph (XBT) instruments. Cruise information, position, date and time were reported for each observation. The data records are comprised of pairs of temperature-depth values. The XBT data files contain temperature values at non-uniform depths. These depths were recorded at the minimum number of points (''''inflection points'''') required to accurately define the temperature curve. Standard XBTs can obtain profiles to depths of 450 m or 760 m. Special instruments permit measurements to 1830 m.

NOAA CoastWatch distributes chlorophyll-a concentration images from the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) on the Orbview-2 satellite. Because data is purchased under a NOAA contract with GeoEye, data distribution is restricted to authorized users. Chlorophyll images, however, are publicly accessible. Questions regarding data access should be directed to NOAA CoastWatch.

NODC Accession 0115709 includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from SHUMPU MARU in the Philippine Sea from 1992-02-25 to 1992-02-29 and retrieved during cruise PACIFICA_49SU19920225 and PCM05 / 49SU9202_4. These data include DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHOSPHATE, SALINITY, WATER TEMPERATURE and pH. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Nobuo Sato and Sukeyoshi Takatani of Kobe Marine Observatory as part of the PACIFICA_49SU19920225 data set. PACIFICA (PACIFic ocean Interior CArbon) was an international collaborative project for the data synthesis of ocean interior carbon and its related parameters in the Pacific Ocean. The North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES), Section of Carbon and Climate (S-CC) supported the project.

NODC Accession 0115707 includes biological, chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from HEALY in the Arctic Ocean, Beaufort Sea and Bering Sea from 2004-07-18 to 2004-08-26 and retrieved during cruise CARINA/32H120040718. These data include ALKALINITY, AMMONIUM, CHLOROPHYLL A, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, FLUORESCENCE, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PHAEOPHYTIN, PHOSPHATE, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE, UREA and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by J. Swift of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and L.. Codispoti of University of Maryland; Center for Environmental Science; Horn Point Laboratory as part of the CARINA/32H120040718 data set. The CARINA (CARbon dioxide IN the Atlantic Ocean) data synthesis project is an international collaborative effort of the EU IP CARBOOCEAN, and U.S. partners. It has produced a merged internally consistent data set of open ocean subsurface measurements for biogeochemical investigations, in particular, studies involving the carbon system. The original focus area was the North Atlantic Ocean, but over time the geographic extent expanded and CARINA now includes data from the entire Atlantic, the Arctic Ocean, and the Southern Ocean.

The Global Volunteer Observing Ship (VOS) Program is coordinated by the UNESCO International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP). International groups from 14 countries have been outfitting research ships and commercial vessels with automated CO2 sampling equipment to analyze the carbon exchange between the ocean and atmosphere.

The Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) Array of 55 moored buoys spans the tropical Pacific from longitudes 165°E to 95°W between latitudes of approximately 8°S and 9°N. Moorings within the array measure surface meteorological and upper-ocean parameters and transmit most data in real time to shore via Service Argos. The array was part of the in-situ measurement portion of the Tropical Ocean-Global Atmosphere (TOGA) Program, a 10-year (1985 - 1994) study of climate variability on seasonal to interannual time scales, the most pronounced mode of which is the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon (McPhaden, 1993).

These data were collected by Rik Wanninkhof, Denis Pierrot and Kevin Sullivan of US DOC; NOAA; OAR; Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory as part of the Gordon_Gunter_Coastal_Cruises_2009 data set. The Global Coastal Carbon Data Project data includes the bottle (discrete) and surface (underway) carbon-related measurements from coastal research cruises, the data from time series cruises and coastal moorings. The coastal regions data are very important for the understanding of carbon cycle on the continental margins.

Current meter data were collected using moored current meter casts in the Puget Sound from March 21, 1979 to November 2, 1979. Data were submitted by Pacific Marine Enivornmental Laboratory (PMEL) as part of the Mesa Puget Sound/PSERP (MESA -PS) project. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Current Meter Data (F015) format. Full current meter moorings descriptions are available at http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f015.html. The F015 format is used for time series measurements of ocean currents. These data are obtained from current meter moorings and represent Eulerian method of current measurement, i.e., the meters are deployed at a fixed point and measure flow past a sensor. Position, bottom depth, sensor depth, and meter characteristics are reported for each station. The data record comprises values of east-west (u) and north-south (v) current vector components at specified date and time. Current direction is defined as the direction toward which the water is flowing with positive directions east and north and negative directions west and south. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering and are typically reported at 10-15 minute time intervals. Water temperature, pressure, and conductivity or salinity may also be reported.
