The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has the statutory mandate to collect hydrographic data in support of nautical chart compilation for safe navigation and to provide background data for engineers, scientific, and other commercial and industrial activities. Hydrographic survey data primarily consist of water depths, but may also include features (e.g. rocks, wrecks), navigation aids, shoreline identification, and bottom type information. NOAA is responsible for archiving and distributing the source data as described in this metadata record.

Physical data were collected from XBT casts from the Indian Ocean. Data were collected from 01 January 2001 to 31 December 2001. Data were submitted by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in support of the Gulf of Mexico NOAA/NMFS Ship of Opportunity (SOOP) and the Global Temperature-Salinity Pilot Project (GTSPP). Physical parameters include temperature profiles.

This data contains abundance, length, and life history data of four species of Calanus copepods. The data is a compilation of 3 cruises of the MV OB carried out by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition during the IGY (1955-1958). The surveys paid close attention to obtaining complete data on the populations and distribution of the adult stages of Copepoda. Two types of plankton nets were used; Juday net with mesh size No. 38 and the K100 net with mesh size No. 9 in the cylindrical part, No. 15 in the upper part and No. 23 or 38 in the lower part of the net. This paper also includes excellent cruise and Calanus abundance maps as well as extensive station information. This data is a summary of three cruises of the MV OB by the Soviet Antarctic Expedition. The article summarizes the distribution of euphausiid species and includes maps of their distribution based on collections of the OB and published data. The euphausiids were mainly sampled with a K100 net: 100 cm diameter, cylindrical part with No. 9 mesh, conical part with No. 15 mesh in the upper part and No. 23 or 38 in the lower part. A few other samples were taken with a Nansen net(50 cm diameter, cylindrical part No. 15 mesh, conical part No. 23 mesh), a Juday plankton net, a Bogorev-Rass net, or a ring-trawl. Most of the samples were taken by oblique hauls.

A custom built camera sled outfitted with video equipment (and other devices) was deployed from the NOAA research vesselTatoosh during August 2005. Video data from specific dives falling within the bounds of the HMPR-116-2005-01d survey area werereviewed to examine the benthic characteristics as a tool for validating sonar imagery.

Biological and chemical data were collected using net, buoy, and bottle casts from the GUS III and LONGHORN in the Gulf of Mexico from 01 January 1961 to 01 December 1975. Data were submitted by the National Marine Fisheries Service in Galveston, Texas with support of the Outer Continental Shelf - South Texas (OCS). The biological properties are zooplankton, plankton, and fisheries while the chemical properties are phosphorus, phosphate, nitrate and oxygen.

NODC Accession 0116069 includes chemical, discrete sample, physical and profile data collected from NATHANIEL B. PALMER in the South Pacific Ocean from 1997-01-13 to 1997-02-11 and retrieved during cruise NBP-97-1 and Ross_Sea_320619970113. These data include AMMONIUM, DISSOLVED INORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON, DISSOLVED OXYGEN, HYDROSTATIC PRESSURE, NITRATE, NITRITE, PARTICULATE ORGANIC CARBON, PARTICULATE ORGANIC NITROGEN, PHOSPHATE, Partial pressure (or fugacity) of carbon dioxide, Potential temperature (theta), SALINITY, SILICATE and WATER TEMPERATURE. The instruments used to collect these data include CTD and bottle. These data were collected by Taro Takahashi and J Marra of Columbia University; Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory as part of the CLIVAR_Ross_Sea_320619970113 data set. The International CLIVAR Global Ocean Carbon and Repeat Hydrography Program carries out a systematic and global re-occupation of select WOCE/JGOFS hydrographic sections to quantify changes in storage and transport of heat, fresh water, carbon dioxide (CO2), and related parameters.

Stationary Point Counts at 4 stations at each survey site were surveyed as part of Rapid Ecological Assessments (REA) conducted at 3 sites around Agrihan in the Marianas Archipelago (MA) during 25 May - 09 June 2007 in the NOAA Hi'ialakai (HI0703) Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (RAMP) Cruise. Raw survey data included species level abundance estimates.

Temperature and salinity profiles were collected from STD casts in the Bering Sea from the SILAS BENT. Data were collected by the University of Alaska - Fairbanks (UAF) as part of Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program (OCSEAP) from 01 September 1975 to 26 September 1975. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard F022 High-Resolution CTD/STD Output Format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/f022.html. An analog file for this accession is available from NODC user services. The F022 format contains high-resolution data collected using CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth) and STD (salinity-temperature-depth) instruments. As they are lowered and raised in the oceans, these electronic devices provide nearly continuous profiles of temperature, salinity, and other parameters. Data values may be subject to averaging or filtering or obtained by interpolation and may be reported at depth intervals as fine as 1m. Cruise and instrument information, position, date, time and sampling interval are reported for each station. Environmental data at the time of the cast (meteorological and sea surface conditions) may also be reported. The data record comprises values of temperature, salinity or conductivity, density (computed sigma-t), and possibly dissolved oxygen or transmissivity at specified depth or pressure levels. Data may be reported at either equally or unequally spaced depth or pressure intervals. A text record is available for comments.
