Multibeam backscatter imagery extracted from gridded bathymetry of the lagoon, shelf, and slope environments of Palmyra Atoll, Pacific Island Areas, Central Pacific. These data provide coverage between 4 and 3500 meters. The backscatter dataset includes data collected using Simrad EM300 and Reson 8101 multibeam sonars. The sonars frequencies are 30 kHz and 240 kHz respectively and the backscatter data from each sonar are processed and gridded separately. These metadata are for the 5 m grid cell size Simrad em300 multibeam backscatter data only.

Oceanographic station, meteorological, and other data were collected from bottle casts from the ALBATROSS IV and other platforms from 17 June 1979 to 09 April 1981. Data were collected by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) as part of the Marine Resources Monitoring, Assessment and Prediction (MARMAP) project. Data were processed by NODC to the NODC standard Oceanographic Station Data (SD2) format. Full format description is available from NODC at www.nodc.noaa.gov/General/NODC-Archive/sd2.html. The Oceanographic Station Data format contains physical-chemical oceanographic data recorded at discrete depth levels. Most of the observations were made using multi-bottle Nansen casts or other types of water samplers. A small amount (about 5 percent) were obtained using electronic CTD conductivity-temperature-depth) or STD (salinity-temperature-depth) recorders. The CTD/STD data were reported to NODC at depth levels equivalent to Nansen cast data, however, and have been processed and stored the same as the Nansen data. Cruise information (e.g., ship, country, institution), position, date, and time, and reported for each station. The principal measured parameters and temperature and salinity, but dissolved oxygen, phosphate, total phosphorus, silicate, nitrate, nitrite, and pH may be reported. Meteorological conditions at the time of the cast (e.g., air temperature and pressure, wind, waves) may also be reported, as well as auxiliary data such as water color (Forel-Ule scale), water transparency (Secchi disk depth), and depth to bottom. Values of density (sigma-t), sound velocity, and dynamic depth anomaly are computed from measured parameters. Each station contains the measurements taken at the observed depth levels, but also includes data values interpolated to a set of standard depth levels.

This dataset has monthly Total Heat Flux data from the TAO/TRITON (Pacific Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/), RAMA (Indian Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/rama/), and PIRATA (Atlantic Ocean, http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/pirata/) arrays of moored buoys which transmit oceanographic and meteorological data to shore in real-time via the Argos satellite system. These buoys are major components of the CLIVAR climate analysis project and the GOOS, GCOS, and GEOSS observing systems. Monthly data is an average of daily values collected during a month. A minimum of 15 daily values are required to compute a monthly average. This dataset contains realtime and delayed mode data (see the 'source' variable). The National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) has deployed long-term passive acoustic recorders in various locations in Alaskan waters and in the High Arctic to determine spatio-temporal distribution of marine mammals as well as environmental and anthropogenic noise. Following the timing of peak calling among the various long-term recorders may provide some insight into finer-scale movements of cetaceans throughout the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas. Changes in ambient noise levels can also be tracked. Recordings are available since 2007 in the Bering and Beaufort Seas, since 2010 in the Chukchi, and from 2008-2012 in Fram Strait. The majority of these recorders were deployed on NMML subsurface moorings, although several have been deployed on the oceanographic moorings of other researchers. Several different types of autonomous passive acoustic recorders have been deployed, most for one year. Recording parameters varied among instrument types and have evolved among projects. The majority of these recorders and deployments were funded by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM); however, several were funded by a grant from the Ocean Acoustics Program (NOAA/S and T).

The National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) has conducted passive acoustic monitoring in the Bering, Chukchi, and Western Beaufort Seas to determine spatio-temporal distribution of marine mammals as well as environmental and anthropogenic noise. Species and sounds detected on sonobuoys include fin, blue, bowhead, humpback, killer, gray, minke, sperm, beluga, sei, and North Pacific right whales, walrus, ribbon and bearded seals, and seismic airguns. This short-term passive acoustic monitoring was also used to locate vocalizing species of interest for photo-identification, tagging, and behavioral studies. Recordings are available since 2007 in the Bering Sea, since 2010 in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, and in 2013 in the Gulf of Alaska. Both omnidirectional and DiFAR sonobuoys have been used. The vast majority of the sonobuoys were deployed opportunistically along the tracks of research cruises funded by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM). In one year (2009), sonobuoys were deployed opportunistically from an aerial survey plane. All sonobuoys were provided by the United States Navy (Naval Operational Logistics Support Center, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crance Division, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy).

The gravity station data (327 records) were compiled by Mr. Bernard Coakley. This data base was received in June 1985. Principal gravity parameters include latitude, longitude, and observed gravity. The observed gravity values are referenced to the International Gravity Standardization Net 1971 (IGSN 71). The gravity anomaly computation uses the Geodetic Reference System 1967 (GRS 67) theoretical gravity formula. The data are randomly distributed within the Ashland area of northern Wisconsin.

Belt transects along 2 consecutively-placed, 25m transect lines were surveyed as part of Rapid Ecological Assessments conducted at 4 sites at Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Remote Island Areas (PRIAs) during 24 January - 14 February 2008 in the NOAA Hi'ialakai (HI0801) Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program (RAMP) Cruise. Raw survey data included species presence and relative abundance, colony counts and size classes by genus, and determination of benthic cover using the line-intercept method. Depending on colony density, 1 m on each side of the transect lines was included in the belt (for a total of 25-50m2 per site).

The Integrated Science Data Management (ISDM) office processes oceanographic profiles reported for the world oceans in near real-time from the Global Telecommunications System (GTS) for the Global Temperature and Salinity Profile Program (GTSPP). These data also support the activities of the Ship of Opportunity Programme Implementation Panel (SOOPIP) and the WOCE Upper Ocean Thermal Program (WOCE UOT). The ISDM sends a copy of these data to the US NODC three times each week.
