Description

The Solar Backscattered Ultra Violet (SBUV) from NOAA-18 Level-3 monthly zonal mean (MZM) product (SBUV2N18L3zm) is derived from the Level-2 retrieved ozone profiles. Ozone retrievals are generated from the v8.6 SBUV algorithm. A Level-3 MZM file computes zonal means covering 5 degree latitude bands for each calendar month. For this product there are 78 months of data from July 2005 through December 2011. There are a total of 36 latitudinal bands, 18 in each hemisphere. Profile data are provided at 21 layers from 1013.25, 639.318, 403.382,254.517, 160.589, 101.325,63.9317, 40.3382, 25.4517, 16.0589, 10.1325, 6.39317,4.03382, 2.54517, 1.60589, 1.01325,0.639317, 0.403382, 0.254517, 0.160589 and 0.101325 hPa (measured at bottom of layer). NOTE: Some profiles have 20 layers and do not report the top most layer. Mixing ratios are reported at 15 layers from 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 7.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0, 30.0, 40.0 and 50.0 hPa (measured at middle of layer). The MZM product averages retrievals that meet the criteria for a good retrieval as determined by error flags in the Level 2 data. A good retrieval is defined as satisfying the following conditions: 1) Profile Error Flag = 0 or 1 (0 = good retrieval; 1 = solar zenith angle > 84 deg.) 2) Total Error Flags = 0, 1, 2 or 5 (0 = good retrieval; 1 = not used; 2 = solar zenith angle > 84 deg; large discrepancy between profile total and best total ozone) NOTE - Total error flag = 5 is anomalously applied at high latitudes and high solar zenith angle where B-Pair total ozone estimate is not as reliable as profile under these conditions. This error flag may be removed in future version of algorithm. The zonal means computed for each month are screened according to the following statistical criteria: 1) number of good retrievals for the month greater than or equal to 2/3 of the samples for a nominal month. 2) mean latitude of good retrievals less than or equal to 1 degree from center of latitude band. 3) mean time of good retrievals less than or equal to 4 days from center of month (i.e., day = 15)

Description

The National Weather Service (NWS) periodically conducts sensor comparison studies to ensure that proposed observing equipment meets requirements set forth in specific solicitations. Other comparison studies may occasionally be conducted in support of a specific project or request, the requirements for which provide the evaluation criteria. The final result of these studies, along with the test data, is usually a summary report documenting the suitability and performance of the selected sensor(s) based on criteria established in the acquisition specification. In the case of studies in support of an acquisition, a sensor evaluation study usually involves three phases. Two of these, the initial laboratory testing and the controlled environment testing, may include vendor-proprietary or other data related to acquisition decisions, and so the results of that testing are not archived. A final phase of testing is the characterization study, usually conducted at the NWS Sterling Research and Development Centers located in Sterling, VA. A characterization study typically spans a year or more, and involves a group of comparison sensors. This study includes test data and supporting documentation from the Sutron Fischer and Porter Rebuild (FPR) kit characterization study at the Sterling Field Support Center in 2008 and 2009. The primary objective of this test was to determine if the accuracy and overall functionality of the Sutron FPR kits met the requirements of the QPL specification (Specification NWS-D111-5-SP001, Fisher and Porter/Belfort Precipitation Gauge Rebuild Kit) over a period of one year. This was accomplished by analyzing sensor drift through calibration, conducting exposure tests, and performing a field demonstration to determine if the Sutron kits met QPL requirements. The study compared the FPR kits with the current version F&P gauges and an ASOS All Weather Precipitation Accumulation Gauge (AWPAG) in a 12-meter Double Fence Intercomparison Reference (DFIR). The long term specification compliance testing shows that the Sutron FPR kits installed in the field met the NWS-D111-5-SP001 specifications.

Description

MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard the Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. Terra's orbit around the Earth is timed so that it passes from north to south across the equator in the morning, while Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon. Terra MODIS and Aqua MODIS are viewing the entire Earth's surface every 1 to 2 days, acquiring data in 36 spectral bands, or groups of wavelengths (see MODIS Technical Specifications). These data will improve our understanding of global dynamics and processes occurring on the land, in the oceans, and in the lower atmosphere. MODIS is playing a vital role in the development of validated, global, interactive Earth system models able to predict global change accurately enough to assist policy makers in making sound decisions concerning the protection of our environment.

Description

A mobile-deployable, submersible multi-depth, simultaneous, spectro-radiometer system (AquaTree) was designed under phase-I, and key elements were tested in the ocean. Detailed modeling and design analysis were conducted to optimize the sensor system for the extremely wide dynamic range of the radiation field from above the surface down to 10 m below. Under Phase-II a full system will be assembled, including (i) two fiber fed spectrometers with TE cooled cameras to provide long integration time and broad dynamic range, (ii) fiber optics based radiance and irradiance collectors that feed into the spectrometers, (iii) the spectrometers housed in a watertight enclosure with multiple fiber and electrical feedthrough connectors. Control will be from a computer on board a ship located up to 300 m away to avoid shading. The system will be deployed at sea. Simultaneous validation will be conducted using other commercial radiation measuring devices and profilers, and water sampling and analysis; coordination with overhead assets (MERIS, MODIS) will provide additional measurements for complete validation of the AquaTree performance and closure for the radiative transfer modeling. The proposed work is synergistic and complementary to other oceanic research work at OKSI; including the AquaScanUVNIR-micro, an airborne hyperspectral scanner. Both the AquaScan and AquaTree cover the 350-1000 nm spectral range. The AquaScan will be flying in on manned platform and also on NASA UAV in support of ocean color, benthic diversity, biomass, and productivity of seagrass and coral reef biomes research. Another project is exploring a low-cost space access for a HyperScan-micro on board a CubeSat. Hyperspectral measurements over a long horizontal path are also conducted by OKSI to extract littoral aerosols properties.

Description

This data set contains calibrated sensor measurements acquired by the Passive and Active L- and S-band (PALS) airborne microwave sensor during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2002 (SMEX02). This data set includes radiometer brightness temperatures (TB) at 1.41 and 2.69 GHz, and radar backscatter coefficients at 1.26 and 3.15 GHz, with multiple polarizations and a 45° incidence angle. The data are geolocated with latitude and longitude information for each data sample. Included are coregistered nadir and boresight infrared temperatures, altitude, and attitude information. Radar and radiometric studies are relevant to SMEX02 because the data indicates wet soil versus dry soil based on differences in emissivity in the microwave spectral region. Data are provided as ASCII files for each flight line and day of the mission. Ten flight lines were flown each day. Flights took place on June 25, 27, and July 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 2002. Data are available via FTP. These data were collected as part of a validation study for the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer - Earth Observing System (AMSR-E).
